Man Dies While Waiting To Confirm Bank Cheque In PH

There was an uproar in front of abbank in Port Harcourt on Monday when an indisposed man waiting in a car to confirm a cheque he gave a relative to cash collapsed and died.

Eyewitness accounts said the man had issued a cheque to a relation of his to cash at the bank. But the bank wrote DAR on the cheque, meaning that they needed to see the issuer of the cheque before honouring it.

The relative then went home and brought him to the bank but left him in the car to invite the bank official to see him. Unfortunately, the bankers did not follow him. They rather asked him to take the man to swear to an affidavit that he was the owner of the cheque.

While the banking hall bantering was going on, the deceased showed signs of distress before he eventually collapsed and died before they could take him to the hospital.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging. The court found him guilty of culpable homicide after months of trial, during which evidence showed he was responsible for the abuse that led to Osinachi's death. The case drew widespread attention across Nigeria, with many calling for justice for the late singer, whose voice had touched millions.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, who presided over the case, ruled that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Peter's actions directly caused the death of his wife. In addition to the death sentence, the court highlighted the need to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable individuals. The judgment has been hailed by human rights activists as a landmark decision in the fight against domestic abuse in Nigeria.
