The Great Commission is the mission Jesus Christ gave His disciples to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples of all nations, baptize believers, teach them to obey His commands, and bear witness to Him through the power of the Holy Spirit.
It is the central missionary mandate of the New Testament Church.
The Great Commission is not merely a programme.
It is not merely an annual evangelism campaign.
It is not merely a responsibility for pastors.
It is not merely for missionaries.
It is the calling of every genuine disciple of Jesus Christ.
A disciple is not only someone who follows Jesus.
A disciple is someone who helps others follow Jesus.
Therefore:
> Every believer is called to be a disciple.
Every disciple is called to make disciples.

2. THE GREAT COMMISSION BEGINS WITH THE GREAT AUTHORITY
Matthew 28:18
> "All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth."
Before Jesus said "Go," He said "All power is given unto Me."
This is foundational.
The Great Commission is built upon the authority of Jesus Christ.
We do not go because we are powerful.
We go because Jesus is Lord.
We do not preach because we are naturally persuasive.
We preach because Christ has commanded us.
We do not make disciples because we are superior.
We make disciples because Jesus has entrusted us with His Gospel.
The sequence is:

The Church does not invent its mission.

3. THE GREAT COMMISSION IS ROOTED IN THE HEART OF GOD
The Great Commission did not begin in Matthew 28.
The heart of God for the nations is revealed throughout Scripture.
Genesis 12:3
God told Abraham:

> "That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations."
Isaiah 49:6
God's servant is described as a light to the nations.

Jesus commands:

The word GO confronts the tendency of believers to remain comfortable.
Jesus sends His disciples beyond their familiar environments.
Go:
To your family.
To your neighbours.
To your workplace.
To your school.
To your campus.
To your community.
To your city.
To your nation.
To other nations.
The Great Commission demands movement.
Sometimes the movement is geographical.
Sometimes it is relational.
Sometimes it is digital.
Sometimes it is through media.
Sometimes it is through business.
Sometimes it is through education.
Sometimes it is through humanitarian service.
But the objective remains the same:
Make Christ known.

The Gospel must move from the church building into the world.

5. THE GREAT COMMISSION IS ABOUT PREACHING THE GOSPEL
Mark 16:15
> "Preach the gospel to every creature."
The word Gospel means good news.
But the Gospel is not simply:
> "God wants you to be successful."
It is not merely:
> "You will become wealthy."
It is not merely:
> "Your problems will disappear."
The Gospel is fundamentally the good news of what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4
Paul summarizes the Gospel around:
Christ's death.
Christ's burial.
Christ's resurrection.
The Gospel addresses humanity's deepest problem:
Sin and separation from God.
And it announces God's greatest solution:
Jesus Christ.
The Gospel announces:
God's holiness.
Humanity's sinfulness.
Christ's substitutionary death.

6. THE GREAT COMMISSION CALLS US TO MAKE DISCIPLES
Matthew 28:19
> "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations..."
The central command in this passage is commonly understood as:
MAKE DISCIPLES
This is deeper than merely getting decisions.
A person can respond to an altar call and still need to be discipled.
A person can attend church and remain spiritually immature.
A person can know Christian vocabulary without living a Christian life.
Therefore, the mission does not stop at conversion.
It continues through discipleship.
A disciple is someone who:
Believes in Jesus.
Follows Jesus.
Learns from Jesus.
Obeys Jesus.
Becomes like Jesus.
Represents Jesus.
Helps others follow Jesus.

The goal of evangelism is not merely decisions; it is disciples who follow Jesus for life.

7. THE GREAT COMMISSION INCLUDES BAPTISM
Matthew 28:19
> "Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."
Baptism is an important act of Christian obedience and public identification with Christ.
Romans 6:3–4

Baptism declares:

Jesus did not send His disciples to fulfil a supernatural mission through human strength alone.
He promised supernatural empowerment.
The Holy Spirit gives:
Boldness.

After prayer, the believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke God's Word boldly.
The pattern is:
PRAYER → POWER → WITNESS
The Great Commission requires both:
The Word of God

The power of the Holy Spirit.

We cannot successfully fulfil a supernatural assignment through natural strength alone.

10. THE GREAT COMMISSION IS A WITNESSING MANDATE
Acts 1:8
> "Ye shall be witnesses unto Me."
A witness speaks about what they know.
Every believer has a story of God's grace.
Your testimony may include:
How you encountered Christ.
How God changed your life.
How you received forgiveness.
How your character was transformed.
How God helped you overcome difficulties.
John 4:28–30
The Samaritan woman encountered Jesus and immediately began telling others.
Her testimony became a bridge through which others encountered Christ.
However, our testimony must ultimately point beyond ourselves.
Not:
> "Look at me."
But:
> "Look at what Jesus has done."

A believer's life should become evidence that Jesus is alive and transforming people.

11. THE GREAT COMMISSION IS FOR ALL NATIONS
Matthew 28:19

Jesus gave a global vision.
Jerusalem
Your immediate environment.
Judaea
Your wider region.
Samaria
People who may be culturally different or socially distant from you.
Uttermost parts of the earth
The nations.
The Great Commission therefore requires both:
LOCAL RESPONSIBILITY
and
GLOBAL VISION.
A church can have a global vision while faithfully serving its local community.
KEY TRUTH
Think globally, serve locally, and remain available to God's sending.

12. THE GREAT COMMISSION REQUIRES CROSSING BARRIERS
The early Church had to cross major barriers:
Cultural barriers.
Ethnic barriers.
Geographic barriers.
Religious barriers.
Social barriers.
Acts 10
Peter's encounter with Cornelius demonstrated that the Gospel was not restricted to one ethnic group.
Galatians 3:28
In Christ, barriers that divide people do not determine their value before God.

Who do I struggle to understand?

Matthew 22:37–39
The Great Commandment is to love God and love our neighbour.
The Great Commission must flow from the Great Commandment.

Love gives urgency to evangelism.
We share the Gospel because people matter to God.

John 4:35
> "Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest."
Jesus saw humanity as a harvest field.
The Church must understand the urgency of the assignment.
Every day:
People are born.

People are asking questions.
People need hope.
People need truth.
The Gospel cannot be permanently postponed.

What God has commanded us to do today should not be endlessly delayed until tomorrow.

The early disciples faced enormous opposition.
Acts 4:18–20
They were commanded not to speak in Jesus' name.
Their response was essentially:

They continued despite:
Threats.
Opposition.

2 Timothy 2:2
Paul instructed Timothy to entrust the message to faithful people who could teach others.

The question is not simply:
> "How many people are following me?"

Jesus invested deeply in twelve disciples.
He taught them.
He corrected them.
He trained them.
He sent them.
He gave them responsibility.

> "And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him, and that He might send them forth to preach."
Notice the progression:
WITH HIM → TRAINED BY HIM → SENT BY HIM
This is the pattern of effective ministry development.
A Great Commission church must intentionally raise:
Soul winners.
Disciple-makers.
Teachers.
Evangelists.
Pastors.
Missionaries.
Leaders.

A church that makes disciples but does not raise disciple-makers will eventually stop multiplying.

Matthew 9:37–38
Jesus said:
> "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth labourers into His harvest."
Before Jesus told them to pray for labourers, He showed them the harvest.
The Great Commission begins with seeing.
Then praying.

The Philippian believers partnered with Paul.
Resources can help advance:
Evangelism.

But resources must always remain servants of the mission, not the master of the mission.

Authority behind us.

Are we reaching our nation?
Are we reaching the nations?
If the answer to all these questions is yes, the church is functioning as a missionary movement.
