As the burial of late former President Muhammadu Buhari holds on Tuesday (today), insights from his kinsmen, domestic workers, neighbours, and close associates reveal how he spent his last two years at his Daura country home after leaving office.

Buhari, 82, died in a London hospital on Sunday and will be laid to rest at his compound in Daura, Katsina State, today, closing the chapter of a life marked by service, humility, and compassion.

Before the burial, however, some of his staff members said Buhari was well-known for his compassion towards animals, especially his pets.

Some of his domestic staff reported that the former President cherished three tortoises aged 28 and 30, along with a great kiskadee bird that frequently visited them.

Uwazuruike Reaffirms Call for Nigeria’s Division Into Six Republics

OWERRI, IMO STATE — Leader of the Biafra Independence Movement (BIM) and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has reiterated his long-standing position that Nigeria will eventually be divided into six independent republics, aligned with the country’s existing geo-political zones.

Speaking on Saturday during a monthly BIM-MASSOB meeting held at the Ojukwu Memorial Library in New Owerri, Uwazuruike insisted that the fragmentation of Nigeria is inevitable and consistent with a prediction he made 25 years ago. He also serves as a representative of the 46-member Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), a global body advocating for marginalized groups.

“The country will ultimately dissolve into six distinct republics: South East (Biafra), South South (Niger Delta), South West (Oduduwa), North East (Arewa), North Central, and North West,” Uwazuruike stated, asserting that Nigeria’s history of ethnic tensions and political instability makes the current federal structure unsustainable.

A statement released by BIM-MASSOB Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, cited multiple petitions sent to international bodies, including the UNPO, the United Nations, and members of the U.S. Congress. The petitions detail alleged human rights violations committed against BIM-MASSOB members over the years.

Referencing the March 29, 2003 incident in Umulolo, near Okigwe, Imo State—where hundreds of BIM-MASSOB members were reportedly killed—Mocha emphasized what he described as systemic repression of the movement’s non-violent activities. “The international community is aware and taking note. Nigeria’s record on human rights continues to draw serious concern globally,” the statement said.

Uwazuruike also cited a 2005 intelligence report by the United States military which forecasted a potential disintegration of Nigeria by 2015, attributing it to ongoing governance challenges and internal conflicts.

The BIM-MASSOB leader maintains that peaceful advocacy remains the group’s method, but insists that Nigeria’s continued unity is unrealistic given prevailing socio-political realities.

MASSOB Not a Proscribed Organisation – We Don’t Enforce Biafra Heroes Day Sit-At-Home

BIAFRA INTERNAL GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE
Issued by: Hon. Ijeomah Anthony, Minister of Information
Date: May 29, 2025
Biafra seat of Power, Owerri

The Biafra Internal Government under the leadership of Elder Virginia Uberzuonu, Biafra prime minister, and the Biafra Independent Movement and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) under the leadership of Chief Dr Ralph Uwazurike, strongly condemn the recent misleading statements issued by the Nigeria Police Force and some sections of the Nigerian press concerning the alleged arrest of a so-called MASSOB member in Anambra State.

We categorically state that MASSOB is not, and has never been, a proscribed organisation by any competent court of law within Nigeria or under any international legal system. Since its founding on September 13, 1999, MASSOB has operated as a peaceful, non-violent self-determination movement, firmly anchored on the universally recognised principles of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, to which Nigeria is aware of and recognise it.

The claim made by the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, alleging the arrest of one "Friday Obeta" as a MASSOB member attempting to enforce a sit-at-home order is not only false but a deliberate attempt to misrepresent a noble organisation with international credibility. We affirm that no authentic member of MASSOB or the Biafra Internal Government has been arrested in connection with any such activities.

It is on record that since the re-declaration of Biafra Independence on May 22, 2000, and the subsequent annual Biafra Heroes and Heroines Remembrance Day on every May 30, MASSOB has never enforced any sit-at-home directive. The observance of this solemn day has always been voluntary and peaceful, as a mark of deep respect by the Biafran people for their fallen heroes — without coercion or threat of enforcement.

We are deeply concerned about the increasing pattern of media sensationalism and police misinformation, often aimed at discrediting legitimate self-determination groups. We call on the Nigerian press to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity and verify facts before publication. Where is the court judgment that proscribes MASSOB? Who issued it? When was it enacted?

This kind of unfounded propaganda is damaging to the credibility of the institutions that issue them and exposes the inability of the state actors to constructively engage with peaceful organisations seeking legal and internationally recognised solutions to the self-determination question.

We reiterate that the Biafra Internal Government was formally inaugurated on December 30, 2019, and its existence has not been legally challenged nor declared unlawful by any court of law. Its formation and activities remain within the framework of legal and peaceful engagement.

The leadership of Biafra Internal Government hereby demands a public retraction of this false narrative by the Nigerian Police Force and the media outlets that published it. We remain open to dialogue and call on all parties to avoid actions that may escalate tensions or infringe on the constitutional and international rights of indigenous peoples.

We urge the general public, international media, human rights observers, and diplomatic bodies to take note of this clarification.

Signed:
Hon. Ijeomah Anthony

By Comrade John Paul Asoque, May 20, 2025

The Biafra Internal Government paid glowing tribute to the former and first Prime Minister of the Biafra Internal Government, Dr. Lambert Obikaizu, as he laid his beloved mother, Late Mrs. Cecilia Obikaizu, to rest at her husband's compound in Okporo Akatta on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Despite heavy rainfall and transportation challenges, Biafra loyalists turned out in massive numbers to console and stand in solidarity with Dr. Obikaizu—a distinguished freedom fighter, scholar, and current chairman of Homeland University, Okwe Building Community.

Late Mrs. Cecilia Obikaizu, who passed on at the age of 93, was remembered for a life well-lived, having been a pillar of strength to her family and community.

The BIG delegation was led by the 6th Prime Minister of the Biafra Internal Government, Her Excellency Elder Virginia Uberzuonu, who delivered a moving condolence message on behalf of Chief Dr. Ralph Uwazurike and the entire Biafra national Council. She expressed heartfelt sympathy and encouraged the Obikaizu family to take heart, praying for God’s grace, unity, and protection upon them.

Other dignitaries present included Chief Emma Ejiaga, Chairman of the Elders in Council; Comrade Ijeomah Anthony, Minister of Information; Comrade Mentus Ngwoke, Minister of Records and Statistics; Justice Vincent Ilogbenu, former Chief Justice and current Chief Minister of Anambra South State; Mazi Michael Ijeomah, Mrs. Nkechi Ajunwa, 4th Speaker of Parliament; Minister of Orlu State; Dr. Linus Ohajianya, Chief Minister of Okigwe State; and Comrade Emma Nnadi, Special Adviser to BIM-MASSOB, among many others from the regional administrations and Elders Council.

In his heartfelt response, Dr. Lambert Obikaizu appreciated the overwhelming show of love, loyalty, and solidarity from the national BIG, describing their presence as a testimony of the undying spirit of Biafra. He prayed for divine blessings upon the leadership and faithful members of BIM-MASSOB and reaffirmed his commitment to the peaceful restoration of Biafra.

The ceremony was ignited with revolutionary Biafran gyration songs rendered by Comrade Sunday Nwabuisi, National Media Head of BIM-MASSOB, creating an emotional yet empowering atmosphere.

Late Mrs. Cecilia Obikaizu’s burial not only marked the passing of a matriarch but also became a symbol of unity, honour, and continued resilience in the Biafran liberation movement.

May her soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.

Kanu Confirmed Ordering Tinubu, Wike’s Death in Broadcasts - DSS Hooded Witness Tells Court | Eagle Media TV Nigeria

A witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) testified in court that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), confirmed making broadcasts in which he ordered the assassination of President Bola Tinubu and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The second prosecution witness, identified only as BBB, said Kanu made the confirmation while his statement was being taken on July 17, 2021, after recordings of the broadcasts were played back to him.

The witness stated that Kanu incited his followers through Radio Biafra broadcasts to commit acts of violence, including a N100 million bounty placed on Wike’s head, the burning of federal properties in Lagos, and attacks on police officers. The court admitted these recorded broadcasts, saved on a flash drive, into evidence and played them in open court. Seven separate recordings were reviewed during the proceedings, in which Kanu allegedly gave detailed instructions for violent actions.

Additionally, the court admitted a letter dated June 10, 2021, written by the then Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, which linked Kanu to the killing of Ahmed Gulak, a PDP chieftain, and the arson attack on the home of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma. The letter accused Kanu of orchestrating several crimes through his public calls to violence.

In one recording from December 12, 2020, Kanu announced the formation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and accused Wike of offering a N50 million bounty on a Biafran, urging his followers to kill him in retaliation. In a separate broadcast from October 20, 2020, during the EndSARS protests, Kanu called Tinubu a traitor and directed his supporters to destroy federal properties in Lagos, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and police stations, and to kill Tinubu.

Another recording featured Kanu offering N100 million for Wike’s head and reiterating his call to violence. In a May 30, 2021 broadcast, he ordered a complete lockdown in the South East the next day, threatening those who violated it. Further recordings showed him urging the killing of soldiers, soliciting weapons during a U.S. address, and warning other Nigerian ethnic groups about Fulani dominance.

Following the playing of the seventh recording, the court admitted a video of Kanu’s statement session. Prosecuting counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) requested an adjournment to allow the court to view the hour-and-a-half-long video. The defense, led by Emeka Etiaba (SAN), did not object. Justice James Omotosho adjourned the trial to May 8 for continuation.

Conclave mystery as African cardinal claims he hasn't been invited

The conclave to elect a new Pope has been hit by a controversy after an African cardinal claimed he 'hadn't been invited'. Cardinal John Njue, 79, is eligible to join the other 133 cardinals who are gathering in the Vatican for the start of the secretive process which begins this afternoon in the Sistine Chapel.

Speaking to Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation cardinal Njue said:' Those who go there for the election are usually sent official invites, and that has not happened on my part. 'The fact is that I have not been invited.

I don't know why I've been excluded, if I'm not there it's not because I am in poor health.' Italian media immediately jumped on his comments and said it had 'sparked mystery and intrigue'.

Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial for cross examination of FG’s witness

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the prescribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), until Friday for cross-examination of the Federal Government’s witness.

Justice James Omotosho adjourned the case after the FG’s counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, led the first prosecution witness, identified as PWAAA, in evidence and was discharged from the witness box.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the witness, a Department of State Service (DSS) operative, who gave his evidence behind a protective shield, tendered documentary evidence against the IPOB leader.

The evidence was tendered through Awomolo and marked as exhibits by the judge after Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not object to the application.

The witness told the court that he had served for about 18 years and that he was assigned with some team members to arrest Kanu at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Lagos.

In the evidence presented before the court, a video recording of Kanu’s interrogation by DSS operatives was played in the open court, and the statement he made on Oct. 15, 2015, was also read, where he admitted to establishing Radio Biafra in London and also registering in London.

In the statement equally read out in the open court by the witness, Kanu said he was interrogated by the DSS without the presence of his lawyer as required by law.

The IPOB leader, in the documentary evidence, admitted not registering the radio station with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) because he felt there was no need for it.

In his statement, he admitted fighting for the emancipation of the people of South East, South South and parts of Benue and Kogi.

Kanu, who stated that freedom fighting is not a crime in any part of the world, including Nigeria, said it is a fundamental right.

He claimed not to be involved in any violence because he had not been linked with any.

Four suitcases recovered from Kanu in his hotel room in 2015 were also brought to the courtroom and displayed.

The suitcases contained personal belongings of the defendant, especially the Biafra Radio equipment.

Kanu’s lawyer, Agabi, did not object to tendering them, and Justice Omotosho admitted and marked them as exhibits in the trial. (NAN)
