*FUTO Students Society of Journalists (FSSJ) Expresses Concerns Over Delay in Release of Cleared Candidates List for SUG Elections*
The FUTO Students Society of Journalists (FSSJ) is deeply concerned about the delay in the release of the cleared candidates list for the forthcoming Student Union Government (SUG) Elections at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). With just a few hours remaining before the elections, this turn of events has raised significant doubts regarding the independence, transparency, and credibility of the Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC).
As the watchdog of the electoral process, FSSJ has consistently advocated for transparency, fairness, and student involvement in shaping the future leadership of FUTO. It is disheartening to witness a delay in the release of the cleared candidates list, as this not only undermines the democratic process but also creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust among the student body.
We urge ISEC to recognize the importance of their role as an independent body charged with overseeing the electoral process and to prioritize the release of the cleared candidates list as a matter of utmost urgency. This will not only address the concerns raised by FSSJ but also demonstrate a commitment to upholding the democratic values of FUTO.
The release of the cleared candidates list plays a crucial role in ensuring a level playing field and allowing students to make informed decisions about their preferred candidates. By delaying this essential step, ISEC is impeding the rights of both the candidates and the voters, which goes against the principles of democracy and fair representation
FSSJ reiterates its call for ISEC to immediately release the cleared candidates list without further delay. This is necessary to restore faith in the electoral process, uphold the principles of transparency and independence, and provide the students with the necessary information to exercise their voting rights responsibly.
FSSJ remains dedicated to monitoring the electoral process and ensuring that the rights and interests of the student community are safeguarded. We will continue to provide updates and advocate for a transparent, fair, and inclusive election environment.
We call upon ISEC to take immediate action to rectify this situation and uphold their responsibility to the FUTO student body.
