HOW DO I DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN MY THOUGHTS AND THE VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
This has been the question of so many believers.
This is so because, even though we are born again, we are still humans. I pray that as you read, God Himself will give you understanding in Jesus name, Amen.
Now, there are so many ways by which God speaks to us as children of God. Some of them are: the written Word of God, inner witness of the Holy Spirit, dreams, visions, trance, prophecies, through servants of God, etc. God speaks to us in different ways. But constantly, God speaks to us through His written Word.
When we are ignorant of the written Word of God, it will be very hard for us to discover most times when and what God is saying through other medium of communication to us. His written Word is the true foundation for understanding God's speakings.
In Colossians chapter 3 verse 16, the scripture says "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with Grace in your hearts to the Lord." When the Word of God dwells in us richly, our mind is renewed, and only then can we actually think the thoughts of God. For the scripture says in Isaiah chapter 55 verse 8 that "for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD."
Haven said that, let's go back to our question: how do I differentiate between my thoughts and the voice of the Holy Spirit?
Now, what is are "thoughts"?
Thoughts are simply forms created in the mind. It also mean a way of thinking.
Haven said that, let me quickly tell you that there are three major kinds of thoughts (I personally classified them this way). They are:
1. Sinful thoughts
-Satan inspired thoughts
-Self-motivated thoughts
2. Normal human reasoning.
(Not sinful yet not inspired by the Spirit of God)
3. Holy thoughts
(These are Spirit inspired thoughts.)
God most times speaks to his children through their mind because, he is dwelling in us.
But, the problem is that most times we can't differenciate number two and three (normal thoughts and Holy thoughts).
I remember when God wanted me to relocate to a new place in school. Before then, I had made a decision to continue there till my final year. But when that session was about rounding up, one night I went to bed after spending some hours in prayers, but I couldn't sleep. All of a sudden, I began to think about my previous decision I made to continue there. It was then I began to see reasons to relocate to a new place. The Spirit of God began to take my mind into so many things. It was then I made a new decision to relocate. And thank God I obeyed Him, because I later saw what would have happened displayed months after I relocated.
But you have to understand that before God could comfortably speak to me through my thoughts, He had aligned my spirit and mind in the place of prayer. That was why I could pick the those signals from God.
Prayer aligns you into the will of God. Prayer makes you yield to the Holy Ghost. Prayer clears doubts and amplifies the voice of the Spirit of God in your heart.
Before Jesus started His earthly ministry at the age of 30, He had to seek the face of God with fasting for 40 days and 40 nights. What do you think He was doing? He was aligning Himself into the will of God the Father through prayers. At that point, His Fathers thoughts became His thoughts too. His Father's will became also His will. And God had to empower Him to go and do His will. Not only that, before he chose His twelve disciples, He spent a whole night praying. The bible said, he prayed all night. At that point, He couldn't make a wrong decision. He had been aligned into the will of God. His Father's thoughts were now His thoughts. Jesus always had that habit of separating Himself in the place of prayer in other to align Himself into the will of God. No wonder all His utterances were as though the Father Himself was speaking. He was always connected to Heaven 24/7.
Prayer and studying of the word of God prepares your mind to receive clearly from the Spirit of God. It is in the place of prayer and meditation on the word of God that we get real burdens from the heart of the Father.
Below are some of the characteristics of God's speakings in your heart/mind:
1. God's voice most times is authoritative. (Remember Philip and the Ethiopian Eu**ch)
2. When God speaks to you, most times it can only take obedience to restore peace to your heart.
3. God's voice never contradicts His written Word.
4. God's speakings gets clearer and clearer with time. Whenever you are not sure if it's really God that spoke, just prayerfully give it time. You need to be patient because, God's speakings most times is prophetic in nature. Most times, He ..."calleth those things which be not as though they were." Romans 4:17.
In the realm of God, there is no future, everything happens now. It's only man that has a future. And so, God can tell you that you have a car when you haven't even seen money to eat for that time. That's God for you.
5. God confirms what He tells you. When. God speaks to you on something, most times, God will still use another means to confirm what He told you earlier. Sometimes He may use any of His servants available. It can just be a casual discussion and you will be surprised he/she will just emphasize on that particular point.
6. God's speakings are most times instructions. God doesn't use suggestions. You see, God is and instructor. He doesn't suggest. Most times Satan and your mind are the ones that use suggestions, and those suggestions are what actually brings confusion. God is not the author of confusion!
7. The end product of God's speakings is faith and not fear.
God doesn't put fear in any of His children. Fear is never from God.
Before I conclude, let me quickly show you what God told me years ago:
1. "Any spirit that confesseth I,I, me,me, my,my, is not of me."
It took me years to understand those words. Well, it can be applied to the above question. It simply means that it's self-centered.
2. "The devil speaks with strife."
It took me time to understand this too. You would notice that from Genesis where satan asked Eve "Has God said...?" and from the temptations of Jesus Christ in the wilderness where he said to Jesus "If thou be the Son of God..." He was debating against the spoken word of God. That's what he does. He strifes with both the written and spoken Word of God.
But I must warn you beloved, Satan can still use the known word of God to deceive man. That's why we must study the Word of God and ask God for the spirit of DISCERNMENT. If the devil could deceive the one-third angels of God in Heaven, brethren we must watch and pray lest we be deceived also.
3. "Depend on Me. Don't depend on your little strength..."
These were the words the Holy Ghost spoke to me few years ago.
While Jesus was on earth, He gave Himself to prayer. That's why He overcame that wicked one.
Brethren, depend on God. Don't even depend on your hearts/thoughts. For the heart of man is deceitful, so says the scripture. Don't depend on your understanding. Depend on the Spirit of God.
To depend on the Spirit of God simply means that you acknowledge Him in all things, call upon Him in prayer continually, let the Spirit of God help you to pray and put your faith in the Word of God.
I must submit to you all that God is helping me in these things too.
Glory and honour be unto our God forever, Amen.
