If you live in Nigeria, especially Imo State, please be very careful when taking public transport or waiting for a bus.
So today, I decided not to drive — I just wanted to do a quick waybill for some raffia earrings that customers ordered, both wholesale and retail. After sending the waybill at the park, I was just standing opposite Relief Junction, right in front of Young Shall Grow Motors.
Out of nowhere, one guy with a backpack walked up to me and said,
“Excuse me ma, please where can I get a bus going to Lagos?”
In my mind I was like, Seriously? Aren’t we literally standing in front of Young Shall Grow? Drivers are shouting ‘Lagos! Lagos!’ everywhere — and it’s me you want to ask? If you know Relief Junction well that's where all the transportation companies are.
Immediately, I remembered a story my mum once told me — how some people use tricks like that to distract or hypnotize their victims. My body just froze for a second.
I didn’t say a word. I only pointed towards the Young Shall Grow park without opening my mouth.
Then, another man nearby said loudly,
“Madam, he’s talking to you o! Answer him now!”
That’s when I really got scared. I looked at the second man thinking, If you heard him, why didn’t you just answer him yourself? Why are you pushing me to talk?
At that point, my instincts kicked in. I quietly crossed the road and kept my eyes on them from a distance. To my shock, both men entered a car and drove off together.
I just stood there with cold chills running down my spine.
What if I had replied them? What if that was their juju format?
Please, my people, these days are evil. Stay alert. Don’t let anyone catch you off guard. Trust your instincts — they might just save you.
