Yahaya Bello Urges Kogi Lawmakers to Fully Support Governor Ododo’s Administration

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has called on members of the Kogi State House of Assembly to offer unwavering support to the administration of his successor, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.

In a brief video circulating on social media, Bello addressed the lawmakers during a recent meeting, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration within the legislative arm. The former governor urged the legislators to work closely with Speaker Aliyu Umar Yusuf and fellow members to advance the policies and initiatives of the current administration.

“Go and cooperate with the Speaker, other members of the House of Assembly of Kogi State, and be part of those that will support Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo in everything that comes to the Assembly,” Bello stated.

During the address, some lawmakers were seen sitting on the floor in a gesture of reverence, while others responded with applause following Bello’s remarks.

Governor Ododo assumed office in January 2024 following the completion of Bello’s tenure. His administration has since been focused on consolidating governance and implementing development programs across the state.

The former governor’s appeal is seen as a strategic move to reinforce legislative backing for Ododo’s leadership and ensure continuity in governance.

Suspected Armed Herders Attack Imo Community, K!ll Vigilante Leader and Leave Others Missing.

Tension has gripped the Amakohia-Ubi community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State following a deadly attack by suspected armed herders on Wednesday evening. The assault, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., resulted in the death of a local vigilante leader and left several others missing, prompting a mass exodus of residents to neighbouring communities for safety.

The slain vigilante leader, identified as Monday Nwaozuzu, popularly known as “Ojo Ola,” was reportedly gunned down during a confrontation with the assailants. Eyewitnesses said the clash began when members of the community’s vigilante group attempted to prevent herders from grazing on farmlands near the local college. The herders, allegedly armed, opened fire on the vigilantes, k!lling Nwaozuzu and injuring another member.

Residents have since been combing nearby bushes in search of the missing vigilantes. One villager reported that when they dialed the phone number of one of the missing men, a suspected herder answered the call, raising fears of possible abduction.

Security operatives have visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, and the body of the deceased has been deposited in a morgue. As of press time, the Imo State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

This attack is the latest in a series of violent clashes between herders and local communities in the region, which residents say have intensified in recent months. Community leaders are calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further violence and restore peace.

JUST IN: Niger Army Confirms Death of Boko Haram Leader Bakura in Targeted Airstrike.

The Nigerien Army has announced the death of Ibrahim Mahamadu, widely known as Bakura, a notorious leader of the Boko Haram insurgent group, during a precision airstrike in the Lake Chad Basin. The operation, carried out on August 15, targeted Bakura’s stronghold in Shilawa, a remote island in the Diffa region near the borders of Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon.

In an official statement released Thursday, the army described Bakura as a “feared leader” and confirmed that the strike was part of a broader counterterrorism campaign. The air force reportedly launched three successive strikes on positions previously occupied by Bakura and his fighters.

Bakura, believed to be around 40 years old and originally from Nigeria, joined Boko Haram over 13 years ago and rose to prominence following the death of former leader Abubakar Shekau in 2021. He led a splinter faction loyal to Shekau, refusing to align with the rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The operation marks a significant milestone in regional efforts to dismantle Boko Haram’s leadership structure. The insurgency, which began in 2009, has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced more than two million people across West Africa.

Security analysts caution that while the death of high-profile militants can disrupt operations, verification of such strikes remains challenging due to the remote nature of conflict zones. Bakura himself had previously been reported dead on multiple occasions.

The Nigerien government has not disclosed further details about the aftermath of the strike or potential retaliatory threats. Regional forces continue to coordinate efforts to combat extremist violence and restore stability in the Lake Chad region.

Burial Dispute Erupts as First Son Allegedly Demands Settlement from Siblings in Imo State.

A family in Imo State is embroiled in a burial dispute following the de@th of their mother, as the first son, Uzoma Nwawere, allegedly refused to allow his mother to be buried in the family compound unless he receives a financial settlement from his married sisters and their spouses.

According to a retired police officer who spoke at the family compound, the couple had multiple children, including Uzoma—their first son—and five daughters, all of whom are married to men from Mbano.

The retired officer claimed that the daughters had cared for their mother during her final years but allegedly neglected their brother and failed to accord him the traditional respect due to a first son. He further alleged that the daughters, in collaboration with their mother, treated Uzoma in a manner that violated cultural expectations.

“Uzoma has been living in the family home under difficult conditions, while his sisters, who are married out, have prospered,” the officer stated in Igbo. “Now that their mother has passed, Uzoma insists that she cannot be buried in the family compound—now his by inheritance—unless he is settled.”

The incident has sparked debate over customary inheritance rights and burial traditions in southeastern Nigeria, where the role of the first son often carries significant cultural weight. Legal experts note that while customary law may grant the first son certain privileges, coercing family members for financial compensation in exchange for burial rights could be considered exploitative and may lead to civil litigation.

As of the time of reporting, no formal mediation has been announced, and the burial arrangements remain unresolved.

JUST IN:United States has expressed concern over security and justice in Nigeria, highlighting issues such as enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and prolonged pre-trial periods. In its latest Human Rights Report, the U.S. State Department cited Amnesty International’s claim that the whereabouts of “dozens of young men detained at the SARS Awkuzu facility in Anambra State” remain unknown since the unit’s disbandment in 2020.

The report also noted that security forces frequently carry out arrests without warrants. Responding to the concerns, presidential spokesman Sunday Dare said the judiciary is actively working to address pre-trial delays and related challenges.
