"Rev. Sr. Kinse Shako Anastasia officially ceased to be a religious sister under the Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangel Sisters due to her public apostasy, as clearly stated in the congregation’s official release.
Canonically speaking, the law is clear: apostasy is apostasy. Once a religious renounces the Catholic faith, she automatically ceases to be a member of her congregation (cf. Can. 694 §1). The Church has simply applied her law, and we respect that.
But let’s look at the deeper issue.
The Congregation’s statement boldly affirms:
“We wish to stress that, at no time did she ever report sexual abuse on her to the Congregation whether by a priest or any other person while she was with us.”
Now compare that with documented evidence below. In fact, Miss Kinse did make a report of sexual harassment while studying at Veritas University Abuja. According to the Vice Chancellor.
She brought forward a case of sexual harassment.
An investigation panel was set up after initial inquiry by the Deputy Vice Chancellor.
The panel investigated the matter.
Also note: the accused was not a CATHOLIC PRIEST.
The file is in the school archive. You can go and check facts.
There are also certain behaviors from her “suggested mental issues,” and the Bishop of Auchi, admitted to certain interventions, including sending money to her parents so she could be taken for psychological counseling.
And here we must pause: this shows a Bishop who did not fold his hands. He personally reached out to assist her, even to the point of providing financial support for her treatment. This is a leader who loves his own. This is the Church we all want. The Church, through her leaders, is truly a Mother who cares.
Now here is the big canonical question: Is it possible for a final professed religious sister to report sexual harassment, be investigated by a university panel, and yet her own congregation remain “unaware”?
This is where something doesn’t add up. For such an investigation to be carried out on a professed sister, proper ecclesial authority and her congregation’s awareness should be indispensable. How could a full panel be formed, testimonies taken, and files archived without her superior or congregation being officially involved?
The evidence of her report is here in this post, the school file in Veritas University Abuja archives. If anyone doubts, go and verify facts.
Now, an even deeper canonical angle must be addressed. Mental pressure invalidates a “true” public defection. If a Facebook post was made under intense mental distress, it cannot be automatically judged as a valid act of apostasy. Canon 1323 (4) & (7) explicitly states that one is not liable to penalties if acting under grave fear, necessity, or without full reason/consent. That means such an act does not carry its canonical weight as a deliberate, free choice.
The issue of “two dismissals”
According to the official statement, Sr. Kinse was:
1. Formally dismissed by a dismissal letter dated 21st July, 2025 due to repeated misconduct and refusal of fraternal correction.
2. Then again declared ipso facto dismissed when she renounced her Catholic faith and embraced Islam (Can. 694 §1).
Here lies the contradiction: canonically, once a sister is already dismissed by formal decree, there is no need for another dismissal since she is no longer a member to begin with. The “two dismissals” raise questions of consistency in the narrative.
But, the Church has spoken: Miss Kinse is no longer a religious sister. Yet, let us not ignore the deeper wounds. She is still undergoing psychological counseling. She is not just an “apostate”; she is a troubled daughter of the nation in crisis. Your harsh words can kill her spirit while she still breathes.
She is no longer a religious sister. But she is still our sister. Pray for her.
The case is closed, it is all the will of God.
