Today at the market, I met one woman who sells quality fashion items. She looked really bothered, so I greeted her and asked how business was going. She sighed and said, Oga, customers don dey run from me o. Dem say my things too expensive. Since morning I never sell anything.
I asked her, Are your items really overpriced or are they just good quality?
She said, 'Na better quality I dey sell. I no dey buy those cheap things wey go tear after one wash. But people no wan hear that one. Dem just dey waka pass.
I told her something simple that made her pause and think. I said, 'If you know your goods are worth it, then stop just talking price, start talking value.
Instead of telling customers “this gown is ₦15,000, tell them This is pure quality material, it doesn’t fade, it doesn’t tear, you can wear it for years, and you’ll still look classy.
I also told her. Try package your items well, make your shop neat, wear one of the items and let people see how fine it looks. People like what they see, not just what they hear.'
She smiled and said, 'You be business person true true. I go try am tomorrow.'
The truth is: people don’t always run because it’s expensive, sometimes it’s because they don’t understand what they’re paying for. If you sell premium, you must explain the premium. Sell with confidence and educate your buyers. Not everybody is looking for cheap, some are looking for something worth it.
