Today, I will teach you one of the most important skills in poultry farming — how to give medication to day-old chicks and when to remove it.
Day old chicks, they are very delicate. The first few days of their life determine their future growth. If you make mistakes now, you will pay for it later.
Medication for day-old chicks is mostly given through water.
We don’t force it into their mouths. Instead, we mix the correct dosage in their drinking water so all chicks can take it gradually.
On the first day, using my Brooding guide we usually start with glucose.
This helps them recover from stress after transport and gives them energy. After 30 minutes when I noticed that all chicks have taken the water I will then give them good professional starter.
Remember the temperature inside the chicks house should not be below 34° for the next 3 days morning, afternoon and night. If you need the full chart for the temperature for the next 21 days ask for it in the comment section
During meditation remember this — always follow the correct measurement. Too much medication can harm them, and too little will not work.
After mixing, place the water where all chicks can easily reach it. Make sure the drinkers are clean. Dirty water will cancel the effect of the medication.
Now, take this serious timing is very important.
Medication should not stay too long in the water. Normally, you give medicated water for about 4 to 6 hours in a day. After that, you remove it and replace it with clean, fresh water.
medication loses its strength after some hours, especially under heat. Also, chicks need fresh water to stay healthy. If they keep drinking medicated water all day, it can stress their system. Which will lead to early mortality.
Please don’t mix different medications unless you are sure they are compatible. Some drugs cancel each other or even harm the birds. Check my Brooding guide at the top of my page to see the medication that can be mixed together
From day one to day five, focus mostly on vitamins, tylosin again early cough or CRD, and antibiotics. But don’t overuse antibiotics. Over-medication is a common mistake.
Always observe your birds. If they are active, eating well, and chirping happily, you are doing the right thing.
If they look weak or gather in one place, something is wrong.
A good farmer does not just give medication — he knows when to give it, how to give it, and when to stop. That is what keeps the birds strong and profitable.
I will stop here for today........
