A team has been established within the Office of the AGF to manage the direct distribution of funds to the 774 local governments nationwide. This initiative marks the beginning of the financial autonomy for the third tier of government, which is set to take effect this month.

The initial gathering of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) for this year is set for Wednesday, where key operational details regarding direct fund distributions to the local governments are anticipated to be a major focus.

“Most of the 774 LGAs will fully start receiving their allocations from January 2025.

“Our committee will reconvene later this month to review its progress and finalise measures before the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) issues authorisation for the complete rollout.

“No challenge to carry out the approval from the Minister to start making the disbursements to the LGAs. There won’t be a challenge because it’s something they (ministry officials) do day in day out for the states.

“A whole department is in charge of it, so it’s not going to be a challenge. The structure has been on the ground. I can confirm that,” a source told The Nation.

It was also reported that the Inter-Ministerial Committee will also tackle the actions of certain governors who are trying to erode the independence of democratically elected local government area chairmen, their deputies, and councilors.

Terror in Imo as miscreants kill 18 after popular masquerade festival in Orsu LGA

No fewer than 18 people were gruesomely killed in coordinated attacks across several communities in the Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the communities of Umukabia, Eziawa, Ihitte Nasa, Umuhu, Amaoku, and Amaebe. Victims were reportedly found with deep machete wounds, fueling outrage and fear among residents.

According to reports, the attacks followed the annual masquerade festival celebrated in the affected communities.

After the festivities, some locals, including holiday returnees, gathered at a popular drinking joint in the area. Tragically, nine people at the joint—customers and attendants alike—were later discovered in pools of blood, all with fatal machete wounds.

“We were just a few blocks away, and nobody heard any sound of gunshots or arguments,” a source, who chose to remain anonymous, told Punch.

“We suspect members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) were behind this,” he added.

The source further detailed that three family members were killed in Umukabia, five people in Eziawa, and another five in Ihitte Nasa. All victims bore similar machete cuts, suggesting a coordinated operation.

“Orsu lost 18 promising lives in one day. How this happened without anyone noticing remains a mystery,” the source lamented.

Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations are underway.

“The police are aware of the killings, and Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma has set up a high-powered security team involving different agencies to unravel the case,” Okoye said.

“The CP appeals to residents to remain calm while we work to ensure justice,” he further stated.

PRESS RELEASE

POLICE RESCUE KIDNAPPED HOSTAGES, ARREST 17 FOR MURDER.

As IGP Reiterates Commitment to Public Safety.

In a remarkable display of courage and commitment, Police Operatives attached to the Imo State Command successfully executed a daring rescue operation that led to the safe liberation of 4 kidnapped hostages. The operation was carried out on Saturday, January 4th 2025, after the operatives received a distress call reporting the abduction of 4 persons in Umuokanne, Ohaji LGA, Imo State. The police operatives swiftly swung into action, locating the criminal hideout and engaging the kidnappers in a fierce gun-duel, during which 2 of the kidnappers were neutralized.

The success of the operation led to the rescue of the 4 victims and the recovery of 1 Ak-47 rifle, 1 Ak-47 magazine and 21 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition. The Force reaffirms its resolute devotion to combatting heinous crimes such as this, and assures members of the public that efforts to rid off criminal elements from our society will continue relentlessly, ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

In another development, on the 3rd of January 2025, Police operatives attached to the Ebonyi State Command arrested 17 suspects in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo LGA for the murder of one Uromchi Okorocha ‘m’, who was accused by local youths of being involved in the killing of several individuals through alleged witchcraft and spiritual means. The suspects had mobilized and apprehended the deceased, but instead of handing him over to legal authorities and committing to the rule of law, they decided to take laws into their hands, becoming judge, jury and executioner. The police operatives of the Uwanna Division mobilized tactical teams to the scene on a rescue mission but the angry mob had already killed and burned Mr Okorocha before the arrival of the Police team.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., condemns this act of jungle justice in totality. Citizens are once again urged to refrain from taking laws into their hands and report any suspected criminal activities to the nearest police division or formation around them for necessary action.

The efforts of the police are constant reaffirmations of the dedication to bring to book perpetrators of heinous acts of crime in our societies. The IGP once again reiterates the unwavering commitment of the Force to public safety and justice for victims of violent crimes. Citizens are encouraged to engage with security agencies, providing any information that may assist in the ultimate goal of creating a utopian society for all. The Nigeria Police Force remains ever committed to ensuring a safe environment for everyone.

"I don't want to delve into the controversy going on, but as a politician, you should know that if you have fired and you receive fire, don't complain, but you can call for a cease fire if you are tired.
We are all politicians and politicians take decisions in pursuit of their political interests.
In the last elections, everybody in Rivers state did anti-party. I did anti-party. I did not allow the SDP candidate to come here to campaign, and when he reached out to me, I told him I was with Tinubu. The FCT Minister did anti-party too. He was very clear that he was with Tinubu, and he did not support the PDP candidate. The present governor also did anti-party. He was with the Wike then, and did not support the PDP presidential candidate. The PDP leaders that are with Fubara today, did anti-party. They did not support the PDP governorship candidate, Fubara at that time, they supported the APC candidate. The APC leaders also did anti-party. They did not support the APC presidential candidate, they supported the PDP presidential candidate. So, all of us did anti-party, and it was not because we love Rivers state or anybody, it was because we were trying to advance our political interests. Today they have switched, and the only anti-party everyone keeps talking about is the one done by Wike. Why? Because he succeeded and others failed in their own anti-party..."
