Why governors are defecting to join Tinubu's political camp ahead of 2027 election ~Wike

“Let every state be sincere to their people, and to Nigerians. I was a governor for eight years. I was a governor running around banks to look for money to do projects. Sometimes, every month, the money that comes will not be enough to pay salaries and all other allowances, not to mention doing projects.

“Today, by the leadership of somebody, by the decisive leadership of somebody who has made it possible for all the states, and the Federal Capital Territory, not to be running around banks again. Rather, banks are now looking for states to say, ‘Look, don’t throw us away, we are here.’’

“Somebody has made that possible; every state now has money. Not only to pay salaries, not only to carry out government activities, but also to embark on projects. It was not like that before,” Wike said.

He described the decision to defect and support the Tinubu-led administration as “worthwhile”, adding that no governor would leave debts for their successors any longer, as it used to happen before.

“So, if, for that reason, so many people are going to support Mr President, I think it is worthwhile. Now, no governor will talk about leaving debts for his successor, unlike what used to happen before. That is the leadership of somebody.

“And that’s what this country needs now: Visionary leadership, purposeful leadership that will be able to make decisions. Decisions that people were running away from taking when they had the opportunity.”

Tinubu to commission Nigeria’s largest lithium processing factory in Nasarawa, Says Alake

President Bola Tinubu will soon commission Nigeria’s most advanced lithium processing factory in Nasarawa State, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Oladele Henry Alake, announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Nigeria Mining Week 2025 in Abuja, Alake said the project marks another bold step in the Tinubu administration’s resolve to take on long-neglected infrastructure initiatives and reposition Nigeria’s solid minerals sector for global relevance.

“As soon as Mr. President returns from his trip, he’s going to commission the most solid lithium grid in Nasarawa,” Alake said.

The minister noted that the lithium factory represents a major breakthrough in the government’s effort to boost mineral processing and local value addition, describing it as a “game changer” for industrialisation and export earnings.

Alake drew a parallel between the lithium project and other major infrastructure works under the Tinubu administration, such as the Sokoto–Badagry and Lagos–Calabar highways, which had been on the drawing board for over four decades.

“The Sokoto–Badagry plan and Lagos–Calabar highway have been in the works for about 43 years. No one summoned the courage to embark on those game-changing projects, but it’s now in motion,” he said.

According to him, these bold steps reflect the President’s commitment to breaking old barriers and driving sustainable growth through decisive action.

“It takes a bold leader to translate good intentions into real projects. No government comes to power without good intentions; the difference lies in the courage to act,” the minister stated.

Alake emphasised that the Nasarawa lithium factory will enhance Nigeria’s capacity in the global battery minerals value chain, providing a platform for job creation, industrial growth, and energy transition opportunities.

He said the initiative is part of the administration’s broader plan to ensure that Nigeria processes its mineral resources locally instead of exporting them raw.

“This administration is committed to changing the narrative from exporting raw minerals to adding value here at home,” Alake added.

He reaffirmed the government’s focus on innovation, transparency, and infrastructure expansion as pathways to make the solid minerals sector globally competitive.

“Progress is the foundation, but global recognition is the goal,” he said.

“No FCT Judge will live in rented apartment by 2027” – Wike declares

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has vowed that by the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first tenure, every judge in the FCT High Court will have a government-provided residence — no more rented apartments.

Speaking during the flag-off of new residences for Heads of Courts, Wike said:

“Before the first tenure of Mr President ends, no judge of the FCT will be living in a rented quarter. I said FCT High Court — not Federal High Court or Industrial Court — but judges of the FCT High Court.”

He added that this marks the end of an era where judges were left to fend for accommodation in private rented houses.

Minister of Works Replies, Says Makinde Is Ignorant On Road Funding.... Invites Oyo Governor To Public Debate Over Road-Project Cost Claims

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has fired back at Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over recent comments concerning the cost of federal road projects, describing the governor’s remarks as “insulting” and “mischievous.”

Umahi spoke on Saturday while inspecting the Keffi section of the Abuja–Mararaba–Keffi road in Nasarawa State, accompanied by Governor Abdullahi Sule.

The minister expressed displeasure at Makinde’s criticism of the cost per kilometre of ongoing federal road projects, insisting that his ministry has been transparent and technically accurate in its computations.

“I have a lot of respect for governors and the Governors’ Forum,” Umahi said.

“But if a governor who is far my junior in engineering and governance insults me, I will talk back. One thing I’m very good at is mathematics I’m an A student in mathematics.”

Addressing the controversy over cost per kilometre, Umahi clarified that the ongoing project, initially pegged at 43 kilometres, was extended to 45 kilometres to accommodate the ₦73 billion released by the previous administration.

He explained that construction costs vary based on materials and methods used.

“If we are doing surface tracing on the shoulder, the cost will be different. If we are using asphalt on the shoulder, the cost will be different. If we are using concrete, as we are doing now, the cost will be different,” he said.

Umahi described as “mischievous” any attempt to generalise the cost of roads without considering design variations, site conditions, and project scope.

“When you divide ₦73 billion by 45 kilometres, you get an estimated cost,” he explained. “This cost includes contingencies and variations of price, which may not even be used. Only when the project is completed can you determine the actual average cost.”

He further stated that road construction projects differ by sections, depending on whether medians are reused or newly constructed. “It is not possible for all sections to cost the same,” he added.

Reacting directly to Governor Makinde’s earlier remarks, Umahi said:

“When I heard what my brother and friend, the Governor of Oyo State, said, I didn’t want to join issues. I think he’s an engineer — an electrical/electronics engineer. But this is road construction. Electrical electronics no reach there.

“I am his senior in governance and in engineering practice. Anything he doesn’t understand, he should call me and ask. I respect him as a friend and brother, but he should withdraw the word that I am ‘dancing around.’ I never danced around. If he insists, he should come for a debate — that is very important.”

Umahi went further to defend his professional reputation, saying his practical experience qualifies him as a “professor” of field engineering.

“There is no ambiguity in cost per kilometre,” he said. “Cost per kilometre can be divided into estimated cost, which has elements of variation, and average cost, which is definitive. I am happy that AI told him exactly what I told him.”

On the persistent traffic gridlock along the Abuja–Mararaba–Keffi highway, Umahi said the Federal Government would collaborate with the Nasarawa State Government to remove roadside trading and illegal structures obstructing the corridor.

“We have market trading on the road in a number of locations,” he noted. “If the governor undertakes demolition to create additional carriageways, we will immediately construct new lanes in those areas. Once that is done, there will be no more traffic in those locations.”

“I don’t want to exchange words with Governor Seyi Makinde, but I believe he’s an engineer or rather, an electrician, sorry, they call it ‘elect elect.’

He knows nothing about road construction.

I’m his senior both in governance and in engineering practice.

So, if there’s anything he doesn’t understand, he should call me and ask.

He should also withdraw the statement that I’m ‘dancing around’ because I never did.

But if he insists, he should come for a debate.” — Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, who is also a professor in practice replies Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
