I never knew that she sang the EYE ON THE SPARROW song!

Ethel Waters is another shining example of an influential Black artist that began in the secular world and eventually brought her talents to the Gospel music scene. In 1950, Ethel Waters was the first Black American performer to star in her own regular television show, Beulah, but it was the 1961 role in the “Good Night, Sweet Blues” episode of the television series Route 66 that earned her an Emmy Award nomination, the first Black woman to be nominated. Acting was a second career after singing in four different genres—jazz, blues, pop, and Gospel. She performed on Broadway stages, the first Black artist to receive top billing with white stars. She also toured with evangelist Billy Graham. We inducted her into our Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1984.

There is news of earthquake and subsequent death toll, structural damage and casualties in some parts of the globe.

In other areas of the world, there is news about economic systems collapsing due to failed leadership causing hardship on citizens.

What gospel song comes to your mind right now that can provide words of comfort and hope to a victim of any of these current woes?

Me: Kirk Franklin's LEAN ON ME

I want to see these guys span many decades. They resonate with many gospel youths globally.

I want to watch them grow and evolve in the different seasons of life, sharing their stories of their walk with God as individuals and as a group.

Congrats to Maverick City crew.

Congratulations everyone. Keep the flag flying. Jesus be glorified everywhere always.

SAY WHAT?!

According to dummies.com, the shape and size of your body and its coordination will partly determine your vocal tone. This is in addition to your emotions and moods influencing your tone.

If your mouth and throat are small, you have smaller vocal chords and probably a higher voice.

Singers with large MOUTHS and HEADS tend to have bigger voices and can make bigger sounds.

The amount of space you open for tone to resonate is a key element in the tone quality of your voice.

Me: Now I am trying to recall if I know any gospel singer with a big voice that has defied this logic.
Any guesses?
I do not want to have to consider the name of the website.

WHY DO PEOPLE SING BETTER IN THE BATHROOM?

According to explorenetorium.edu, this happens because in the shower, you are surrounded by hard, smooth surfaces that bounce the sounds back to you.

This gives your voice much power, turning up the volume.

Because these sounds are bouncing around you, some of them will take a longer time to reach your ears. This will stretch out such sounds, making them richer and fuller so that you sound GREAT!

Don't we all love our bathroom voices?

CALL AND RESPONSE MUSIC IS AFRICAN IN ORIGIN.
True that!

Call and response in music is a succession of 2 distinct phrases usually written in different parts of music where the second phrase is heard as a direct commentary in response to the first phrase.

Originating in Sub Saharan Africa, the natives used this musical form to denote democratic participation in public gatherings for civic, religious or family gatherings.

Call and response music form later served as a foundation for African American music cultural traditions. This is evident in the negro spiritual songs of the US.

According to culturalequity.org, call and response can be thought of as a musical conversation between multiple participants where the caller/leader acts as a guide and facilitator of the musical progression. The others respond in agreement to what the caller dictates.

In many Latin musical styles such as salsa, rumba, cha-cha-cha and timba, call and response is known as 'coro pregon'.

Call and response is still evident in modern day African traditional gospel songs.

Below is a typical Nigerian example:

Caller: eh eh-eh-eh, my God e good o...
Everyone's response: eh eh-eh-eh, my God e good o..
Caller: everything na double double..
Response: na double double..

It reminds me of the popular US gospel classic:
Caller: oh happy day..
Response: oh happy day..
(Repeat)
Caller: when Jesus washed..
Response: when Jesus washed..
Caller: washed my sins away..
Response: oh happy day...
