Heavy Rainfall Destroys Several Homes In Yobe

A torrential downpour on Friday has wrecked havoc in Potiskum, Yobe State. The flood washed away several houses across different parts of the town.

The rainfall, which began late Thursday night and continued into early Friday morning, left many residents displaced after their homes were either damaged or completely collapsed.

The worst-hit areas were neighbourhoods close to the waterways where the impacts were severe as most structures collapsed.

These include Arikime, Ramin Kasa, Tandari, Nahuta, Boriya, Rugar Fulani, and Unguwar Kuwait.

Other affected communities include Old Prison, Filin Nashe, Unguwar Makafi/Majema, Unguwar Jaji Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya Bakin Kwari, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Danjuma, and areas behind Fudiyya Potiskum.

Residents in these areas are frequently affected by flooding due to the absence of proper drainage systems. As a result, rainwater has no outlet causing widespread damages.

As of the time of this report, information were sketchy and confirmed fatalities. However, dozens of homes have been destroyed.
In one of the affected areas where a building collapsed on a woman, she miraculously survived.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has deployed officials to provide relief to the affected victims.

FEC IMPOSES 7-YEAR BAN ON ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW FEDERAL TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

At the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, and presided over by President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian government approved a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions across the country.

The suspension encompasses universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the decision during a briefing with State House correspondents, emphasizing the need to prioritize the consolidation and enhancement of existing institutions over the creation of new ones.

Dr. Alausa highlighted that the proliferation of federal tertiary institutions has led to resource dilution, resulting in inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of qualified academic personnel. He cited instances where some institutions operate significantly below capacity, with minimal student enrollment yet maintaining substantial staff numbers.

"Our focus must shift from expanding access to improving the quality of education. The duplication of institutions has strained our resources and compromised the standard of education," Dr. Alausa stated.

The minister further revealed alarming statistics indicating that numerous polytechnics and colleges of education have experienced low application rates, with some receiving no applications at all. This trend underscores the need for a strategic reassessment of the country's tertiary education framework.

In light of these challenges, the government aims to redirect resources towards upgrading infrastructure, enhancing academic programs, and bolstering faculty development within existing institutions. The objective is to ensure that Nigerian graduates are well-equipped to meet global standards and contribute meaningfully to national development.

While the moratorium applies to federal institutions, the FEC also approved the establishment of nine new private universities, selected from a pool of 79 applications, following rigorous evaluation processes.

This policy shift reflects the government's commitment to addressing systemic issues within the tertiary education sector and fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence.
