The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved a comprehensive list of academic programmes for the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State, following a successful resource verification visit by its team of experts.

The approval marks a major milestone in the establishment of the institution and sets the stage for the full take-off of academic activities in September 2025.

According to the NUC, the newly approved programmes cut across six faculties, reflecting the universityโ€™s unique focus on environmental sustainability, science, and technology.

President Bola Tinubu has officially granted a posthumous pardon to the Ogoni Nine, nearly 30 years after their 1995 ex*****on under General Sani Abacha's military regime.

The group included environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others: Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel and John Kpuine. Their trial and ex*****on sparked global outrage and remain a major human rights controversy in Nigeriaโ€™s history. Speaking at the State House in Abuja, Kaduna Governor Sani Uba said the move is a significant step toward national healing.

Tinubu also posthumously honoured the Ogoni Four, Chief Albert Badey, Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Samuel Orage and Theophilus Orage, and granted clemency to 175 individuals as part of a wider Presidential Prerogative of Mercy. This included pardons for nationalist Herbert Macaulay and Major General Mamman Vatsa, executed for treason in 1986, as well as former lawmaker Farouk Lawan and others who met criteria such as age, illness and good conduct. The pardon of the Ogoni Nine stands out as a powerful symbolic gesture aimed at acknowledging past injustices and promoting national unity.
