North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has officially designated June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” in honor of the rich cultural heritage and valuable contributions of the Igbo community within the state.
In a proclamation signed by Governor Stein, the Igbo people were recognized as an essential part of North Carolina’s social, cultural, and economic framework. The governor emphasized the positive influence of the Igbo population across various fields such as education, law, medicine, technology, business, and the arts.
The statement also acknowledged the community’s strong commitment to civic service, noting their involvement in school programs, food distribution efforts, environmental cleanups, and support for shelters and hospitals. Their active participation in cultural festivals and performances has helped to share Igbo traditions with the wider public.
A special mention was given to the establishment of the nonprofit Igbo Day Festival Organisation in 2022. The organization launched its first cultural celebration on July 10, 2022, aiming to promote awareness of Igbo customs through art, music, language, and core values—especially among the youth.
Governor Stein praised the community for preserving their heritage, strengthening cultural bonds, and encouraging younger generations to embrace their identity.
He concluded the proclamation by stating: “Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’ and urge all residents to join in the celebration.
