THE C-SECTION “POUCH” WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
After a Cesarean section, some women notice a soft fold or “overhang” just above the scar. This is often called a C-section flap or “shelf.”
First, let’s be clear:
👉 It is very common
👉 It is not a mistake or failure
👉 And it does not mean your body didn’t heal well
WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
💡 1. Skin & Tissue Healing During a C-section, layers of skin, fat, and muscle are opened and then repaired. The healing process can cause the tissues to settle differently, leading to a slight bulge above the scar.
💡 2. Scar Tissue Formation As your body heals, scar tissue forms. This can pull the skin inward at the incision line, making the upper area appear like it’s “hanging.”
💡 3. Muscle Separation Many women also experience Diastasis recti. This weakens the abdominal wall and can make the lower belly more prominent.
💡 4. Fat Distribution Pregnancy changes how fat is stored, especially in the lower abdomen. Even with weight loss, this area may still hold on to fat.
💡 5. Genetics & Skin Elasticity Some bodies naturally store fat or have less skin elasticity—so this area may remain softer or fuller.
CAN IT GO AWAY?
Here’s the honest truth:
✔ It can reduce significantly
✔ It may not disappear completely
✔ And that is still normal and healthy
WHAT HELPS IMPROVE IT?
🌿 Gentle core strengthening (after proper healing) Focus on deep core exercises, not aggressive sit-ups.
🌿 Scar massage Once healed, this helps reduce tightness and improves how the skin sits.
🌿 Postpartum support belts Can give temporary support while muscles recover.
🌿 Balanced nutrition Supports fat loss and tissue healing.
🌿 Patience with your body Healing is not a race—especially after major surgery.
WHEN TO PAY ATTENTION
Encourage women to seek review if they notice:
⚠️ Pain at the scar
⚠️ Swelling or redness
⚠️ A bulge that worsens with coughing (to rule out hernia)
A WORD EVERY WOMAN NEEDS TO HEAR 🤍
That “pouch” is not a flaw.
It is a sign that your body carried life and went through surgery to bring a baby safely into the world.
As a midwife, this is what I always remind my mothers:
👉 Healing is layered just like the surgery was
👉 Your body deserves time, care, and kindness
