BREAKING: INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Steps Down

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has handed over to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.

Yakubu has officially bowed out as INEC Chairman after nearly a decade at the helm. He was formally informed of his successor before meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday, where he announced his decision to leave office a month ahead of schedule.

His departure marks the end of a ten-year tenure during which he served two consecutive terms as the head of Nigeria’s electoral body.

“Mahmood Yakubu handed over to May Agbamuche-Mbu, an INEC Commissioner, after a brief ceremony at the INEC headquarters on Tuesday, where RECs and senior officials were present,” a top government source said.

Earlier, it was reported that President Tinubu directed Yakubu to proceed on leave before the official end of his tenure.

He was first appointed INEC Chairman on October 21, 2015, by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, succeeding acting chairperson Amina Zakari. Following Senate confirmation on October 29, 2015, he was sworn in on November 9, 2015.

He was nominated for a second and final term by President Buhari, after completing his first term in November 2020, confirmed by the Senate, and sworn in on December 1, 2020.

“Tinubu is shopping for Prof. Yakubu’s replacement, and Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan is likely to be the next INEC Chairman,” a top government source told Reporters.

APC Thrives On Deceit, Manipulation–Afenifere Leader

The leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, has attacked the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of thriving on deceit, manipulation, and deliberate concealment of truth to hold on to power.

Olaitan made the remarks on Tuesday morning while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme.

The Afenifere leader said the APC government has continued to mislead Nigerians through propaganda while failing to deliver on basic governance and security.

“Well, APC is good at what they know how to do — deceive people, manipulate people, conceal issues. That’s their job; they know how to do it,” Oba Olaitan said.

He challenged Nigerians to reflect on their personal safety and the state of insecurity ravaging the country, asking pointedly whether citizens still felt safe returning home after work.

“Do you feel safe where you are now? Going back home after work, do you feel safe? That’s the question. Nigerians, we tell them that they haven’t done anything to us, they’re serving their lives. We, you must have an agenda,” he added.

Speaking further, the Afenifere leader alleged that certain elements within the ruling party, including those who served in the previous administration, were willing to destroy the country to retain political power.

“The last administration before the present government, that is to say, the government they still have there, just because they want to rule this nation, they had to go to the extent of importing foreign nationals, Fulanis to be precise, to come into the country and destroy the nation,” he alleged.

“If they could not get power, they were prepared to destroy the nation. If anybody has that type of mind, what good can come out of it?”

2027: "How To Nominate INEC Chairman, Commissioners For Credible Election,"- Aregbesola

The national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has suggested how to nominate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, commissioners, and other chief electoral officers.

Aregbesola said political parties with at least five lawmakers in the national assembly should nominate individuals to lead INEC in INEC on an equal basis.

The former Osun state governor argued that the involvement of political parties in the nomination process would ensure fairness.

He further stated that it will reduce the likelihood of manipulation. As reported by TheCable, he stated this on Monday, October 6, during a panel session in Abuja themed “Innovation in Electoral Technology 2015–2025”.

According to Aregbesola, Nigeria’s electoral system cannot command public confidence unless reforms begin from the appointment of the INEC chairman. He said electoral reform must start with how people who manage this process in the first instance are appointed.

“Let parties with at least five members in the national assembly nominate people who will be at the helm of affairs in INEC on an equal basis.

“It’s as simple as that. That solves all the issues. If the parties now depict themselves to allow one of them to run away with it, fine.

“A situation where the principal beneficiary of manipulation nominates who heads INEC already dictates the outcome. “And we would be grandstanding in deceit if we continue pretending technology alone ensures credibility,” he said.
