🎯 SKILL IS NOT ENOUGH—READ THIS BEFORE YOU LOSE YOUR NEXT CLIENT
A few weeks before my wedding, my wife decided to support a startup tailor she had met. A young lady, quite skillful, working from home. So she gave her the materials and paid an advance. A date was agreed for the clothes to be ready. The tailor missed the date. No drama. We understood. She later delivered the clothes on the night of the following day when my wife went out to get something.
But because the clothes were delivered on the road, my wife told her that she would send her the balance when she got home, but due to other pending pressures, she couldn't send the balance that night. Just the next day, this tailor dropped a message that left my wife stunned:
“If I don’t get my balance before noon, you won’t like what I will do. And I will not remind you again.” gam gam (in the sound of Nollywood)
No call. No soft reminder. Just like that.
My wife froze.
This was someone she liked… someone she had already planned to make her go-to tailor… someone she had told me she would support because she’s just starting out.
But guess what?
That one message ended it.
Hear me, and hear me well: your skill can open the door, but your character will either keep you inside or throw you out.
And I’ve seen this happen many times, not just as a customer, but as a manager of an organization.
I coordinate spelling bee and STEM competitions involving hundreds of teachers, parents, and schools. Tensions run high. Questions fly in from everywhere. Some will accuse you of things that never happened. Some don’t read instructions but still argue confidently. Some are simply impatient.
I’d be lying if I said I don’t feel frustrated sometimes. I do.
But many of them still come back to say: “Mr. Fidelis, how do you stay calm? You always respond gently. Even when people provoke you.”
And my answer is simple: these people are not just participants. They are clients, partners, and stakeholders. They are part of the vision. So I choose to be calm. I choose to listen. I choose to respect. I choose relationship over ego.
Because again,Skill is not enough. Emotional intelligence is your real competitive advantage.
So, to every tailor, teacher, baker, designer, business owner, and rising brand:
✅ Your gift may attract clients, but your attitude will decide if they stay or go.
Don’t let one harsh word cost you a future of favour.
