The 5 Kinds of Teachers Running Down Your School
As someone who has worked closely with schools in Port Harcourt, Iβve come to realize that the strength of any school lies not just in its infrastructure or curriculum, but in the kind of teachers it retains. A school can have the best vision statement and glossy brochures, yet still struggle to grow because of the silent saboteurs within its staff rooms.
Here are five types of teachers that can quietly run down any school:
1. The Unmotivated Teacher
These are teachers who have lost passion for teaching. They stroll into class late, recycle the same notes year after year, and show no enthusiasm. Students quickly notice, and parents eventually do too.
2. The Negative Teacher
They are masters at spreading complaints. To them, nothing in the school works, management is bad, salaries are late, students are terrible. They poison the atmosphere, discouraging colleagues and even whispering negativity to parents.
3. The Unprofessional Teacher
These are teachers who blur boundaries: gossiping with parents, shouting unnecessarily in class, dressing inappropriately, or mishandling conflicts.
4. The Resistant-to-Change Teacher
Every new initiative is met with: βThatβs not how we do it.β They refuse training, ignore technology, and discourage innovation. In todayβs competitive education space, this mindset cripples progress
5. The Money-First Teacher
Passion is secondary for them; they are only after salary. They see teaching as a temporary hustle until βsomething better comes.β Such teachers rarely give their best.
Bottom Line:
A school is only as strong as its teachers. School owners and administrators must audit their staff culture, invest in training, and be bold enough to let go of the wrong kinds of teachers as the new session begins. Otherwise, no matter how much is spent on marketing or infrastructure, the reputation of the school will keep sinking.
Education is nation-building, and our children deserve better.
