PETROL IS N196 PET LITRE DESPITE FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL-IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has stated that its members are still selling Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, at N196 per litre, despite the removal of fuel subsidy announced by President Bola Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

During an appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday, IPMAN's National Public Relations Officer, Yakubu Suleiman, emphasized that the association had advised its members not to panic and to continue selling the product at the appropriate pricing at their filling stations.

Suleiman stressed that virtually all the stations were selling petrol at the appropriate pricing.

When asked about the "appropriate pricing," he mentioned that some stations were selling at N195 per litre, while others were selling at N196 per litre.

When further questioned if the price range should not exceed N195 and N196 per litre, the IPMAN executive responded, "Of course, that is the stipulated and normal price that filling stations used to sell even before the announcement made by Mr President the day before yesterday."

Suleiman cautioned Nigerians against panic buying and stated that the absence of subsidy payments would take effect in July, not June.

He revealed that IPMAN had deployed a Task Force team across the country to enforce the N196 per litre price. Around 100 retail outlets had already been sanctioned and shut down for selling at exorbitant prices and exploiting Nigerians. Suleiman clarified that retail outlets selling petrol beyond the appropriate price were not members of IPMAN.

"We have a task force that visits all the filling stations in the country. I want to assure you that they are actively working, and any filling station caught increasing the price just because of this announcement will face penalties. I want to assure Nigerians not to panic," emphasized the IPMAN spokesman.

JOSKO GVARDIOL: CHARTING RISE OF RB LEIPZIG DEFENDER WHO WILL TOUCH THE STATRS AHEAD OF MAN CITY CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TIE.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid have all been linked with a big-money move for Gvardiol but Croatia international has a buyout clause of 110m Euros (£98m); ahead of RB Leipzig's Champions League tie with City, we detail the 21-year-old's extraordinary rise

When Manchester City go to RB Leipzig for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, they will come up against one of the world's highest-rated young defenders.

Josko Gvardiol - the man in the mask for Croatia at the World Cup - has only just turned 21 years old but is coveted by Europe's top clubs.

Such is his standing, Leipzig inserted a 110m Euro (£98m) buyout clause in his contract, which becomes active in 2024. There is a good chance he will go for a lot more than that this summer, with City, Chelsea and Liverpool among the clubs linked with a big-money move.

But what makes Gvardiol so special?
"He will touch the stars. He will be elite."

Damir Krznar has been an important figure in Gvardiol's meteoric rise - and he is convinced the trajectory will continue.

As academy director at Dinamo Zagreb, he oversaw Gvardiol's development. As Dinamo's head coach he led the club to a league and cup double, with the teenage Gvardiol a breakout star in his defence.

Krznar watched on proudly as the left-footed centre-back grabbed global attention with his team-of-the-tournament worthy displays in Qatar.

Those performances came as no surprise to Krznar, though. He has seen Gvardiol hone his standout combination of technical skill, physical presence and an ice-cool mentality and knew his former player would be at home on the biggest stage. It's where he belongs.

"I expected something like this," said Krznar, now head coach at Maribor. "He played without any mistakes. There was a mistake, maybe, against Lionel Messi for the third goal against Argentina… but this is not a mistake, this is Messi!" Krznar laughs at Gvardiol's unwanted role in a memorable moment of Messi magic.

But while Gvardiol was unable to stop the little maestro on that occasion, it was the defender's consistent approach to the tournament which had the most striking impact on his former coach. Regardless of the opponent or stage of the competition, Gvardiol was always composed in dangerous areas and brave in possession. They are hallmarks from his earliest years in the Dinamo academy.

"On Croatian television, after the first game, he said 'maybe I need to take more risks'," smiles Krznar. "Imagine that! Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, Mateo Kovacic, who play it simple, possessional football. And this young kid wants to take risks over them!

"This is what makes him great.

"He's a big guy, a tough guy and in a duel he doesn't have a problem," continues Krznar. "He has very good speed, speed of reaction, everything.

"But this is what makes him different: he always searches first to pass forward. A ball to make the progression to the 'one line', to the 'two line', to the 'three line'… and this is a characteristic of midfielders.

breaking passes forward
"This is [the type of] central defenders we will search for in the future. I think Josko is one of those modern central defenders."

Krznar is again chuckling as he remembers how Gvardiol and his team-mates in the Dinamo Zagreb academy "pulled our nerves apart" as they boldly played out from the back against Chelsea and Bayern Munich in the UEFA youth competitions.

It was a style Krznar and his coaches encouraged. "We were aware that this is football we need to play because the whole world is searching for that," he said.

It was in that forward-thinking environment Gvardiol flourished

His development gathered pace with his breakthrough into the Dinamo first team, first as a left-back and then at centre-back. By the time he had the silverware success under Krznar in the 2020/21 season, a move to RB Leipzig had already been agreed for the then-18-year-old, although there had also been interest from Leeds after their promotion to the Premier League.

"He also had an offer from England and at this time it was a divide," says Krznar. "What is better? To go to England or Leipzig? When I spoke with him, he said 'I chose Leipzig just because I think it's that mid-step I need to make to go to England, to go to the best league in the world'.

"I think this is a very clever decision for him because he thought or he knew - probably knew - that he can take the place in this team [Leipzig] and this is a place where he can grow, where he can develop more, and come to the Premier League like a completely finished, great player."

He could well be approaching that point now.

"His left foot is outstanding," says Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze, who covers RB Leipzig. "His pass accuracy, his passing speed is outstanding. Risky passes and dribbling through the first pressing line... Line-break passes are one of his best abilities. I've never seen this at this age at this level.

Tinubu Shuts down Lagos, as APC Holds Rally

Amidst fanfare and jubilations, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Asíwájú Bola Tinubu, practically shut down Lagos at the party’s campaign grand finale rally.

Accompanied by President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu was ushered into Lagos by crowd of residents who lined up the roads as his convoy snaked to the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the rally.

Addressing the rally, Asíwájú facing the president said: “As you worked hard for me, I will work hard for Nigeria. All the plans set out in our Action Plan for Renewed Hope for Nigerians will be pursued rigorously.”

At every turn, he thanked President Buhari for standing firm for democracy, accountability, transparency and fairness.

“The president asked all of us interested to go and contest the primaries of our party. After I was picked overwhelmingly by the delegates, he didn’t ask them to change the results because of my tribe or religion or because I’m not from Daura like him, he accepted me and celebrated with me, telling me ‘you are almost there now’.”

Asíwájú also said when it was time for the choice of a running mate, the president turned down his offer to choose for him, telling him “you know better, you are very experienced and you know the kind of person who will assist you to run the country, so pick that person’.

“Thank you Mr. President, you gave me the courage, the confidence and the will to pick right,” he said.

The APC candidate said he chose as running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima who he described a most knowledgeable and independent-minded person.

He said Shettima had shown determination and grit to perform and be different, describing him a dependable, reliable and courageous man.

Asíwájú Tinubu promised to do all in his power to continue where Buhari would stop, and consolidate on his achievements.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu thanked the people of the state for turning out in large numbers to receive President Buhari and Asíwájú Tinubu and to also attend the rally.

He said with the massive turn out, they had shown their love for the ‘City Boy,’ asking them to go further on Saturday February 25, 2023 to vote Asíwájú for president.

Plateau State governor, Simon Lalong, who is also Director- General, APC Presidential Campaign Council, in his own speech, noted that the party was already celebrating Asiwaju as in- coming president of the country, ahead the Saturday polluted, saying a new president had already been sighted.

The governor pointedly said that Tinubu, who is popularly referred to as City Boy, would soon become Garki Boy, once he gets sworn in as next president, come May 29, 2023.

He, therefore, thanked all for attending the grand finale in Lagos and congratulated them ahead of Saturday’s presidential election.

APC National Chairman, Abdullahi As any, described the rally as symbolic, noting that President Buhari had brought Tinubu to Lagos, to round- of the statewide campaign, which began some weeks back.

The party chieftain assured Nigerians that Tinubu, who he maintained would succeed President Buhari in office, would sustain his legacies, urging the electorate to go all out and vote the former the Lagos governor in the presidential election, even as he declared that the die was already cast.

“We have a president who will be a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari. We are sure when he gets into office, the legacies of President Buhari will be kept. You go and vote, by mid- day Saturday, the die is cast, and we have the president to be sworn in by May 29.

“That is what the symbolic rally is all about,” he said.

He equally expressed appreciation for attending the rally and for their patient

Those who also addressed the rally also included APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Director-General of the Tinubu-Shettima Campaign and Plateau State, Governor Simon Lalong and the wife of the APC candidate, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Also present at the rally were Senate President Ahmed Lawan, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima, and Governors Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Mohammed Inuwa (Gombe), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Babagana Zulum (Borno).

Others included former governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun) as well as former House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole, National Woman Leader, Beta Edu, Youth and Sports Minister, Chief Sunday Dare and Adamawa APC Governorship Candidate, Hajiya Binani.

Nigerians not sure elections will hold on Saturday – Falana

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, says there is no guarantee that Nigeria is prepared for the general elections scheduled to commence, on Saturday, February 25.

Falana spoke while appearing on Arise TV programme, on Tuesday.

Nigerians have been battling the scarcity of naira notes fuelled by the federal government’s decision to redesign the N200, N500, and N1000.

The hardship from the cash crunch, coupled with petrol scarcity, has ignited protests in some parts of the country.

Concerns have been raised about how the situation may affect the conduct of the presidential and governorship elections on February 25 and March 11 respectively.

Speaking on the development, Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said there is “no indication” that people are ready for the elections.

The human rights lawyer said despite assurance by the armed forces, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be the agency guaranteeing Nigerians of the situation.

He said the issue of naira notes and petrol scarcity must be addressed before the country can be truly ready for the elections.

“By now, Nigerians should be fully prepared for the election. But unfortunately, there is no indication, and people are still saying will the election hold or not,” Falana said.

“The chief of defence staff has no business with respect to our election. We are under a democratic system of government, and it should be the IGP that should be speaking about security. Because, it is the police, under the law, that will man the polling units. The armed forces are only asked to stand by.

“Let us all appreciate that we are operating a civilian dispensation and the military must go back to their barracks. The person that should be doing the talking is the INEC chair, who has said the commission needs cash to take care of some logistics.

Pictorial: Youths protest naira scarcity in Ondo

Youths in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Friday took to the streets to protest the ban of old N500 and N1000 notes by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) in a nationwide broadcast on Thursday declared that old N500 and N1000 notes were no longer legal tender in Nigeria while old N200 notes would remain legal tender until April 10.

The pronouncement of the President appeared to have sparked off anger of the people as there had been protests across many cities on Friday. The protesters barricaded the Benin-Ore-Sagamu Expressway, hindering vehicular movements on the highway, chanting solidarity songs.

One of the protesters told our correspondent that the President’s broadcast on the old naira notes on Thursday had indicated that he was behind the action of the Central Bank of Nigeria which caused the scarcity of the new notes.

He said, “We the masses are suffering, people are hungry, we are protesting to show our grievances, there will be no movement of vehicles here today. What Buhari said yesterday has shown that he is the one that directed the CBN to make Nigerians suffer over the scarcity of new notes and rejection of old notes by the banks.”

Another protester, who identified himself as Ibrahim, said the protest was necessary for the President to know that his speech was not acceptable to Nigerians and should reverse himself.

“The Supreme Court had ordered the CBN to extend the deadline of the old notes but the President himself disobeyed the order of the Supreme Court and Nigerians are suffering and dying.

"For the President to tell us that the N500 and N100 old notes are no more legal tender while they are not making the new notes available is not acceptable to us"

CBN orders banks to collect old N500, N1,000 notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has directed Deposit Money Banks to collect old N500, and N1,000 notes from customers with reference code generated from its website.

Multiple bank sources told Truetalk Media that the branches received a directive from the head office some hours ago that they should collect the old notes from their customers who have enrolled and generated reference code from the CBN website.

A top CBN official confirmed the directive: “Yes we have directed them to collect the old N500 and N1,000 from customers, subject to maximum of N500,000.”

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari directed that the old N500 and N1,000 notes were no longer legal tenders, but that those having the notes should take the notes to the CBN.

Consequently, the CBN opened a portal for people with the old N500 and N1,000 notes to register how much they want to deposit and to get a reference code to confirm there registration.

The reference code will be used to deposit the old notes at any of the CBN offices across the country.

However, investigation revealed that the CBN might have allowed the banks to collect the old notes from their customers, following the huge number of people that besieged its offices to deposit the old N500 and N1,000.

A top bank official and branch head told Truetalk Media that the branch will collect old notes from customers tomorrow (Saturday) as the branch did not open to customers today due to fear of attack.

RIVERS ASSURES ON EFFECTIVE ERADICATION OF PREVENTABLE DISEASES
.. Gets US CDC Backing On Immunisation

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo has assured the US Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) of Governor Nyesom Wike’s resolve to continue in the effective eradication of preventable diseases that affect people in the state.

Speaking during a working visit by the Country Director of the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Mary Boyd to discuss efforts in supporting Rivers State towards tackling HIV, TB and Covid-19 in his office, the SSG reiterated that Governor Nyesom Wike places high premium on health.

“We all know prevention is better than cure. Governor Wike is working to prevent HIV, Tuberculosis, Polio, COVID-19 and other diseases. He will not spare any effort to ensure we do our beat. We appreciate your visit and support in the areas of HIV, Turbercolsis and other immunization campaigns.

“The Ministry of Health is doing a lot in line with the government's mandate; and Counterpart funds for crucial programs like these are regularly released'.

“I assure you that the Governor appreciates the US Government in advocacy, technical, infrastructural and other support of our developmental efforts. We do not want any aspect of your work to slow down," he stated.

The Country Director for the US Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr Mary Boyd explained that successes have been recorded for the past two years with 140 thousand people living with HIV now having access to treatment, thus ensuring 85% treatment coverage in the State.

Said she: “Not only can they live a healthy, productive life, they also don’t transmit the virus anymore. This has been an important legacy that this partnership has been able to accomplish in the last two years.

“Two other areas that the CDC works in Nigeria are in the areas of Immunization and Global Health Security. Important accomplishment that we also monitor is that 81% of eligible individuals now have access to routine immunization in Rivers State. That is above average, compared to other parts of Nigeria. There is also a very functional emergency operation centre here in Rivers.

“Honestly, our collaboration with Rivers State has been wonderful because we can point to areas of impact that we have had in the lives of the people in Rivers'.

“Another reason why we are here is knowing that Rivers used to have a high burden of HIV disease, tuberculosis; and knowing that Covid has been a burden on everyone, and the longer it is around, the more fatigue we will all experience, we have been talking to your team on ways to leverage some of the resilient infrastructure that already exist in these powerful programs to make sure that we take advantage of them to further extend the impact of our collaboration to save more lives."

She further appealed to the State Government to act on the new record of the polio data and advocated for support to improve immunization coverage for polio as well that of COVID-19 vaccination coverage.

According to her, “It’s been wonderful that Nigeria is wild polio-free but the environmental polio is a potential threat. On HIV, Rivers State has been recognized as a State that releases the counterpart fund which has been responsible for the success on HIV. I am confident that, that can be harnessed for immunization.

In the same vein, the CDC Immunization Director, Dr. Omotayo Bolu advised that keys to successes in the immunization drive are when the state takes ownership of the campaigns such as release of counterpart fund for polio, measles, covid-19 and other vaccines for preventable diseases.

“What the state counterpart fund does is that it allows us to reach very hard to reach areas like the riverine areas, good micro plan, resources for teams, building local capacity and more, she added.
