Travelling through the creeks, rivers, forests, and communities of the Niger Delta, and exploring other parts of Nigeria, has been one of the most eye opening experiences of my life as a travel creator. Every journey reveals a story, a culture, a beautiful landscape, a unique tradition, or a hidden destination with the potential to attract visitors from across the world. From peaceful waterfront communities to ancient heritage sites, rich wildlife, mangrove forests, and breathtaking ecotourism locations, I keep discovering how much beauty this country possesses beyond the places we already know. Sometimes, I wonder how many of these treasures remain unknown simply because nobody has taken the time to explore, document, promote, and invest in them.
But here is the question that continues to trouble me: Why do many of our leaders seem to pay so little attention to the tourism potential of the very regions and communities that host these destinations? Why should communities blessed with beautiful landscapes, rich cultural heritage, wildlife, and ecotourism opportunities continue to struggle for recognition, access roads, visitor facilities, security, and investment? Tourism is more than taking pictures or making videos; it can create jobs, empower local businesses, preserve our traditions, and generate revenue for both communities and government. I understand that leaders face competing priorities, but shouldn’t tourism be part of the development conversation, especially in regions with so much untapped potential? As I continue exploring and telling these stories, I believe we must move beyond celebrating our natural beauty on social media to building sustainable tourism destinations. Do you think our leaders truly understand the economic value of the tourism treasures within their territories, or are we simply leaving our greatest opportunities unexplored?
