Happy Father’s Day from the Gold-specs jawfish (Opistognathus randalli)! Dads-to-be of many jawfish species carry eggs in their mouths. This behavior helps protect offspring from predators. To attract females, male jawfish do a “dance” that involves a series of sweeping movements and fin-flashing. And the crescendo of this courtship ritual? Males open their mouths as wide as possible to boast their mouthbrooding potential!

Behold the fascinating Cucumber garden spider, brilliantly captured by Raj Bharathi. This unique spider, with its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, demonstrates the incredible diversity and creativity of nature.

Here are some key features of the Cucumber Spider:

Appearance:
They have a bright green abdomen with paler sides and a yellowish-brown carapace. A red spot is visible on the underside of the abdomen near the spinnerets.

Size:
Females grow up to 8 mm, while males are smaller, reaching around 5 mm.
Habitat: They are commonly found on trees and bushes in woodland, scrub, and hedgerows.
Web: They are orb-weavers, meaning they build circular webs to catch their prey.

Diet:
They feed on small flying insects.
Venom: Though they are venomous, they are harmless to humans.

While A. cucurbitina and A. opisthographa are difficult to distinguish, A. cucurbitina has a red spot visible from below, and A. opisthographa can have 5 pairs of black dots on the sides of the abdomen.
