NATO’S ENEMY VANISHED IN 1991. WHY IS NATO STILL EXPANDING ON RUSSIA’S BORDERS

Many forget that NATO was created to counter the Soviet Union. But when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and the Warsaw Pact dissolved, NATO didn’t disband instead, it expanded.
Look closely at the map today. From the Black Sea, Russia is encircled: Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia all sit strategically on its borders. For the United States and NATO, this might look like a geopolitical chess game. But for Russia, it cuts to the heart of national security.
What was supposed to end with the Cold War has instead escalated into a new era of confrontation. The question we must ask is: If NATO’s original enemy vanished in 1991, why is NATO still expanding on Russia’s doorstep?
