THE SAD TRUTH ABOUT IGBO BUSINESS MINDSET

Awuzie Frankline wrote✍️

Let’s be honest with ourselves, in all the three major zones of Nigeria — North, West, and East, it’s only in Igbo land that the prices of goods are more than double. Even common things like vegetables, palm oil, garri, things we produce by ourselves are so expensive it doesn’t make sense.

Anyone who has lived in the North or West will tell you how hard it is to adjust when they come home to the East. The moment you enter our markets, you’ll literally see greed written on every price tag. And it’s not just the local traders, even the importers and big businessmen are guilty.

Our so-called “rich men” don’t build businesses to make life easier for others. They do it to maintain their luxury lifestyles and to show off in front of hungry youths. It’s no longer about growth or balance — it’s all about status and pride.

If you really want to see how greedy some of our people can be, try buying ₦1,000 worth of onions from one Aboki, then buy the same ₦1,000 worth from an Igbo woman. Both bought from the same source, but the Igbo woman will shock you with how few onions she gives you. Ask her why — you’ll hear plenty excuses. That’s not business, that’s a sickness of conscience.

Let’s stop deceiving ourselves , Igbos are not marginalised in Nigeria. In fact, the average Igbo youth lives far better than most northern youths. Our real problem is the Oliver Twist spirit — we always want more, even when we already have enough. We refuse to fix our own problems, yet we cry “marginalisation” every day.

And for those saying, “Go and import your own goods instead of criticising,” that’s the useless mindset that has crippled our reasoning as a people. If you don’t want to be criticised, then don’t bring goods for us to buy! The moment your business serves the public, you are open to public criticism — that’s how accountability works.

Until we change this mindset from greed to fairness, from pride to purpose — Ala Igbo will keep shouting “we are hated,” while we are the ones doing the real damage to ourselves.

King Philip Obele Joins Eminent Monarchs as National Council of Traditional Rulers Holds Executive Meeting in Lagos

The Oneh Eh Eleme XI, His Majesty King Dr. Philip Osaro Obele, JP, DSSRS, was among the distinguished royal fathers who graced the Executive Committee Meeting of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), held in Lagos on Monday, October 13, 2025.

The meeting, hosted by the Lagos State Government at the Lagos Continental Hotel, was themed “The Traditional Institution: The Imperative of Its Inclusion in Effective and Efficient Governance in Nigeria.”

The high-level gathering drew prominent traditional rulers and political leaders from across the nation. It was chaired by His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, alongside the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; and other state council chairmen, including His Majesty Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Among the distinguished monarchs in attendance were King Dr. Appolus Chu, OFR (Oneh Eh Nchia X); Alhaji Muhammad Mera, the Emir of Argungu; and several other eminent royal fathers representing diverse kingdoms and emirates across Nigeria.

In his address, the Sultan of Sokoto urged Nigerians to uphold unity, love, and resilience, stressing that “after difficulty comes ease.” He called on traditional leaders to continue serving as symbols of peace and cohesion in their communities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, in his welcome remarks, described traditional rulers as indispensable partners in governance, noting that their inclusion fosters peace, justice, and social harmony.

Similarly, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State emphasized the need for constitutional recognition of traditional institutions, citing examples from Ghana, South Africa, and Namibia. He warned against sidelining the custodians of Nigeria’s culture and values, urging them to remain non-partisan while guiding political leaders toward unity and good governance.

The meeting reaffirmed the traditional institution’s crucial role in national stability and development, with King Philip Obele’s participation underscoring Eleme Kingdom’s strong representation in the collective effort to strengthen traditional leadership within Nigeria’s governance framework.

COMPLETE THE PROJECT IN ONE MONTH OR GET OUT OF SITE, FUBARA WARNS RAFFOUL

Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara on Friday ordered Raffoul Nigeria Limited to complete the 6.5-kilometre Woji–Aleto–Alesa–Refinery Road within one month or face termination.

The warning signaled mounting impatience caused by the protracted delay of the road project that also includes a roughly 200-metre bridge.

Governor Fubara made the demand during an unscheduled inspection of the site, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Projects, Hebron Wisdom.

“This project was awarded about June 2020 by my predecessor,” Governor Fubara said. “I even went as far as giving them two variations to enable them achieve a good proportion of this job. But to my greatest surprise, there is no progress to show for it.”

Governor Fubara noted that the project was evaluated and cancelled under an earlier emergency administration, but said he had given Raffoul “another opportunity” to deliver. He warned that the state would revert to the previous administration’s decision if there was no substantial completion within 30 days.

“If they can’t complete this job in the next one month, I will stick to that position of the administrator as at when the emergency rule was on in the state,” he said.

The governor also sharply criticized dredging activity taking place near the bridge, describing it as unsafe and unacceptable. “How could a normal human being be dredging very close to a bridge? Is it proper?” Fubara asked.

“If I come here any other time or get any information that dredging activity is being conducted around this area, I will personally supervise and destroy the dredger myself.”

During the visit, Governor Fubara inspected the bridgeworks and surrounding site conditions and the road.

The governor’s rebuke of nearby dredging activity signaled a zero-tolerance approach to what he characterized as unsafe ancillary operations.

TINUBU PARDONS MACAULAY, VATSA, SARO-WIWA, LAWAN, GRANTS CLEMENCY TO 82 INMATES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a wave of presidential pardons and clemencies for several prominent Nigerians.

The decision followed the recommendations of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy (PACPM) and the endorsement of the National Council of State, which met in Abuja on Thursday.

A statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy on October 9, 2025 said one of those granted posthumous pardon is Major General Mamman Vatsa, a soldier, poet, and writer who was executed in 1986 after being convicted of treason under the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. His pardon marks a symbolic act of national reconciliation, almost four decades after his death.

Also pardoned is Herbert Macaulay, often regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism and co-founder, with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). Macaulay, who served as the NCNC’s first president, was convicted by British colonial authorities in 1913 and barred from public service in what historians have long described as an unjust trial. Although he died in 1946, his name has now been formally cleared by the Tinubu administration.

President Tinubu also extended clemency to several living individuals, including Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives; Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia; Barrister Hussaini Umar; and Ayinla Saadu Alanamu. They were pardoned after showing genuine remorse and readiness to reintegrate into society.

Other beneficiaries include Nweke Francis Chibueze, serving a life sentence for cocaine-related offences, and Dr. Nwogu Peters, who has served 12 of his 17-year prison term for fraud.

In one of the most significant gestures of the day, the President granted posthumous pardons to the Ogoni Nine — environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others executed in 1995 under General Sani Abacha’s regime. In addition, Tinubu conferred national honours on the Ogoni Four: Chief Albert Badey, Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Samuel Orage, and Theophilus Orage.

Exercising his constitutional powers of mercy, the President approved clemency for 82 inmates across various correctional facilities, reduced the prison terms of 65 others, and commuted the death sentences of seven inmates to life imprisonment. The move reflects what officials describe as a broader effort to promote rehabilitation, justice, and human rights within the Nigerian correctional system.

The Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), includes prominent Nigerians such as Chief Akinlolu Olujinmi (CON), Professor Alkasum Abba, Professor (Mrs.) Nike Y. Sidikat Ijaiya, Justice Augustine B. Utsaha, and Dr. Onwusoro Maduka, who serves as secretary. Institutional representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, and the Christian Association of Nigeria are also members.

The committee reviewed 175 inmate interviews and 62 applications covering 119 inmates, bringing the total to 294 cases. Of these, 175 were approved for various forms of clemency, including full pardons, sentence reductions, and commutations. The committee based its decisions on humanitarian criteria such as old age, terminal illness, youth, long-term good conduct, and evidence of remorse or vocational rehabilitation.

The PACPM was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, on January 15, 2025, as part of President Tinubu’s broader commitment to justice, fairness, and social reintegration for deserving Nigerians.

My attention has been drawn once again to the activities of individuals and groups who persist in using my name to promote or endorse various online businesses and ventures. Despite earlier clarifications issued by my aides, some persons have continued to exploit my identity for personal and commercial gain, thereby misleading unsuspecting members of the public.

I wish to state categorically that I have no connection whatsoever with any of these endorsements or promotional activities. At no time have I authorised any individual, business, or online platform to use my name, image, or identity for commercial purposes or profit-making ventures. Such acts are fraudulent, deceptive, and aimed solely at exploiting public trust.

The general public is therefore strongly advised to disregard these false claims and exercise utmost caution when encountering any online content that purports to represent or involve me in business dealings. Genuine information concerning me or my engagements will continue to be communicated through officially verified channels.
