Some time ago, a client called me asking for an immediate Vet visit to see his puppy that according to him looked pregnant.

Well on arrival, the little one indeed had a swollen belly, poor appetite, and was passing out loose stool. As I asked him some questions, I discovered he had indeed kept to the deworming schedule but without the guidance of his vet

And so since he has dewormed or so he thought, it's most likely “just baby fat,” in his words when in reality, it could be worse....

Well treatment was initiated for the puppy from different angles of my suspicions and within days, the transformation was visible — brighter eyes, more energy, and a happy wagging tail.

👉 Lesson: There's no small clinical sign in practice. Even as small as worms....they are silent killers. They can cause anemia, stunted growth, and even death in young dogs. Regular deworming schedules with the APPROPRIATE AGENTS are non-negotiable for every responsible pet parent.

📌 Call to action: If your puppy has a pot belly, poor coat, or passes worms, don’t wait, DON'T MEDICATE WITHOUT THE ATTENTION OF A VET.

Book a veterinary check-up. Prevention is easier than emergency treatment.

THE DANGER OF HUMAN MEDS!!!

A client once called me that she noticed her pet was crying in pain and because she wanted to help him, she found and gave paracetamol to her dog for pain.

I applauded the initiative but I also highlighted that it was not a good move, not just because of the dangers of self medication but also dangers of not seeking medical guidance before doing such

As veterinarians, our choice of medication, dose and route of administration, is achieved after several factors are considered.

This is my way of trying to say that...its best you let a veterinarian in on the situation of things before giving medication of any kind

The painful thing is that signs of inappropriate medications most times show at terminal stages and I am talking liver and kidney damage...would you want to loose your most cherished possession over carelessness?

CALL YOUR VET.. and who else best suits this other than your favorite Female Veterinarian 🥰🥰🥰

A client once called me to complain that his dog started coughing after playtime.
Initially, he thought it was a sign of excitement.

After certain questions and answer sessions, It turned out to be kennel cough.

Early checkups save pets.”

Let elaborate a little in this...

Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is like a doggy flu. It spreads in places where dogs gather (boarding houses, parks, daycare).

Symptoms include a persistent dry cough, gagging, or retching. Most cases are treatable, but puppies and weak dogs can develop pneumonia.

Vaccination and avoiding exposure help prevent it.

So Facebook just reminded me that four years ago from today, I officially signed out from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State...,

The journey was a very tough and challenging one not academically but other aspects or should I rather say other m***Ed up lecturers....STORY FOR ANOTHER DAY.....Phew!!!

But on this day four years ago I was nothing short of ecstatic...so much so that I had to make a special outfit as of then tho🤣🤣.....

But my way of trying to say...that regardless of the storm, always find the good in your present

It may not be something so enormous...heck! it may not even qualify to be a trending story but always be grateful for the positives...

And needless to say TRUST GOD IN THE PROCESS...

FOUR YEARS down the line...we may not be where we thought we should be by now but we most definitely are not where we were yesterday...

If you see this post, take a minute to JUST THANK GOD for the positives...you can even go the extra mile to thank him for the storm because HE WILL NEVER LEAVE NOR FORSAKE YOU...

✨ When Reflex Meets Reality: A Cat’s Story ✨

On a certain day, my phone rang and on the other end was a distraught client. Through her tears, she narrated what had happened to her beloved cat.

As usual, her cat had followed her up a height. She was holding a ceramic item in one hand and carried the cat in the other, intending to descend together. Unfortunately, she missed a step. Faced with the choice of either letting the ceramic item shatter or letting go of the cat, she chose to release the cat—hoping it would land safely using its righting reflex (the natural ability of cats to twist midair and land on their feet).

But that day, reflex met reality. The cat landed awkwardly and sustained a leg fracture. Thankfully, with prompt veterinary care, the cat recovered well. 🐾💙

👉 The lesson? While cats are naturally gifted with this reflex, it isn’t foolproof. Factors like height, landing surface, body position, and even gravity itself can override nature’s instinct.

⚠️ Always handle your pets with caution. Do not rely solely on the righting reflex to protect them. Prevention is the best protection.

🩺 Case of the Week: “Doc, My Cat Is Wheezing!” 😿😱

This week, I got a message from a concerned cat mum—first-time pet parent—who was worried her cat was breathing weirdly.
She said it sounded like the poor thing was struggling to breathe 😰.

So, we jumped on a teleconsultation, and I asked her to record the sound so I could have a listen.
Guess what?
The “weird breathing” was just normal cat purring—yes, the sound cats make when they’re happy, excited, or relaxed! 🐱💕

Being a new cat parent, she’d never heard a purr before and thought something was wrong.

After a few tips and a little test (she moved away from the cat and noticed the sound stopped), she realized:
✨ My cat is just happy to see me! ✨

Lesson of the week?
👉 Not all strange sounds mean something is wrong.

Recently, while waiting with my child at the child specialist hospital, I noticed a mother nearby who was in deep distress. Her tears told a story even before she spoke: she had dozed off while caring for her baby, and in that brief moment, the child had fallen from the bed. She was overwhelmed with guilt and fear.

I took a moment to sit with her and remind her that as mothers, we all have moments of weakness. We make mistakes, but that doesn’t diminish our love or dedication to our children. We are human, and it's okay to falter. What matters is that we rise again, stronger and more committed to giving our best.

This experience resonated deeply with me—not just as a mother, but also as a veterinarian here in Port Harcourt. Every day, I meet pet owners who feel they’ve failed their animals—whether it’s a missed vaccination, a sudden illness, or an unexpected accident. I always remind them, too, that mistakes happen. What matters is the love and care we continue to offer.
