The Permanent Secretary of the Kano Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Kabawa, alongside Garba Kwankwaso, nephew to the influential NNPP National Leader, Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, and three others have have been arrested over their alleged involvement in a multi-billion naira drug supply scam.

Their arrest was announced by the State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday.

Among the arrested is Alhaji Abdullahi Bashir, the chairman of the state branch of the Association for Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), who also heads the Tauroni Local Government Area (LGA).

Garba Kwankwaso, the Managing Director of Novomed Pharmaceuticals, stands at the center of this nefarious plot, allegedly colluding with others to execute the drug supply scam.

The suspects are accused of conspiring to award a lucrative contract to Novomed, enabling the company to provide essential drugs to 38 local government areas across the state, all while sharply violating stringent public procurement laws.

Preliminary investigations have unveiled a startling truth: each of the 38 LGAs disbursed N9.150 million to Novomed for drug procurement, yet the promised supplies never materialized, leaving a community grappling with the consequences of greed and deception.

Dancehall singer Cynthia Morgan has once again sparked a heated conversation online by issuing a direct and scathing warning to music executive Jude Okoye.

In a recent post, Cynthia Morgan, also known as Madrina, addressed Jude Okoye, accusing him of meddling in her affairs and recalling their initial meeting in Atlanta, where no mention of signing her to his label was made. She also accused him of deceit, labeling his actions as “witchcraft” and urging him to focus on his own family and leave her alone.

Cynthia didn’t hold back in her post, where she called out Joy Tongo, a woman she claims Jude was involved with, who allegedly played a role in their business dealings. She further alleged that Joy Tongo was merely seeking contacts when she urged Jude to sign her upon their return to Nigeria.

According to Cynthia, this incident led to her being signed under circumstances she now seems to regret.

The post quickly garnered attention from netizens, who expressed their support for Cynthia Morgan and criticized Jude Okoye for his alleged role in her career downfall. Many fans echoed her sentiments, accusing Jude of sabotaging her once-promising career, which shined brightly in the Nigerian music scene before dimming prematurely.

The online reactions suggest that many still hold Jude Okoye responsible for the downturn in Cynthia’s career, highlighting ongoing tensions between the two.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, says his administration will remain consistent in the support for security agencies to overcome crime and criminality in the state.

Governor Fubara gave the assurance today when he paid a condolence visit to the Commissionner of Police, Olatunji Disu at the Command's headquarters over the killing of a Police Inspector, Thankgod O. and another police civilian staff, who were recently killed in the line of duty.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo said, it is a usual practice for the government to show support and encourage family of the deceased.

“It is a usual practice in Rivers State to stand shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime and criminality. If anything happens to you, we try to come physically, to share in your pains and show that we are ready to support those left behind and let you know that, your effort is not in vain. Rivers people appreciate your contributions.

“We covey the deep sympathy of the Rivers State Government and the people to you and the families of the gallant officer and support staff who have paid the supreme price.

“We reiterate that the law enforcement agencies are doing well, especially those in Rivers State. We know the efforts you are making to ensure our people sleep with their two eyes closed," he said.

Speaking to the family, he said, “This token to the widow and children of Inspector Thankgod and the family of police civilian staff is to support you. It is small compared to the prices they have paid. The State Government knows your pain and hopes that the token helps until you stand back on your feet.

“Your fathers and husbands died for a good cause. I know that when your parents die for a worthy cause, God will always stand by you. They did not die for selfish or criminal endeavours. Be encouraged, God will reward you. Now, focus on God and ensure your children grow up with the fear of God and the spirit of hard work. In a short while, you will have reasons to thank God,” he emphasised.

The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, thanked the Rivers State Governor for the consistent benevolence to officers of the State Police Command.

“On behalf of my management and staff, I say thank you for this wonderful thing you have done for us. This is not the first time you have come to assist to alleviate the sorrows of our officers. We appreciate the Governor of Rivers State.

“This message is for everyone who took part in the killing of our officers. We will continue to go after them until we pick all of them. May Almighty God assist us to achieve it," he stressed.

The CP noted that in the entire nation, Rivers State has the best reward system for officers caught up in active duty.

The widow of Inspector Thankgod commended and prayed God’s blessing on the Government and the people of Rivers State.

Niyi Ijalaye, resident electoral commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun state, is dead.

The Ogun REC slumped and died in his hotel room in Abuja after a meeting of RECs at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday evening.

The meeting, chaired by Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, dwelt on the forthcoming off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Confirming the incident to TheCable, Rotimi Oyekanmi, spokesperson of the INEC chairman, said “unfortunately, we lost the REC yesterday after the meeting”.

The REC, who was dressed in a blue striped outfit, appeared healthy during the meeting.

Ijalaye, who hails from Ondo, was appointed as the Ogun state REC in March 2022, following the transfer of Olusegun Agbaje, his successor, to Lagos.

The incident adds to the number of persons who have slumped and died in recent times.

In June, Essien Etop Andrew, the deputy comptroller in charge of revenue at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), was fielding questions from members of the house of representatives committee on public accounts, when he coughed and slumped.

Andrew was rushed to the national assembly clinic where he was confirmed dead.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter are among six tourists missing after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily as a tornado hit the area.
Rescue officials confirmed that one body had been found after the 56-metre boat, named Bayesian, sunk around 5am on Monday near Porticello.

Four Britons are reportedly among six people missing at sea, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
There were 22 people onboard the vessel at the time and 15 were rescued by coastguard patrol boats and firefighters, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares.

Mr Lynch co-founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June this year, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an £8.64 billion sale to US company Hewlett Packard.
The coast guard said that divers had been sent to inspect the wreck of the Bayesian, which was lying at a depth of 49 metres.
Italian authorities said that a body, believed to be that of the vessel’s chef, had been recovered in their search for missing yachtsmen near the vessel’s hull.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo and that a team would conduct a basic assessment of the scene.

The Court of Appeal on Tuesday ordered the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to produce himself for arraignment.
The Court also restrained Bello from taking further steps in the charge unless he is arraigned.

The court further set aside the judgment delivered by the Kogi State High Court.
Bello’s whereabouts have been unknown since the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attempted to arrest him during a raid from his residence in Abuja, a few months ago.

Governor Usman Ododo had scuttled attempts by EFCC’s operatives to arrest Bello from his residence in Abuja.

EFCC is currently prosecuting Bello for alleged misappropriation of over N80 billion while he was a governor for eight years.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a businessman, Ayodele Toyosi, before a Lagos High Court in Ikeja, for allegedly defrauding some people of N600,150,000 and $50,000.

Toyosi was arraigned along with his two companies, Reaprite Global Limited and Agrorite Limited, on an 11-count charge.

The defendant, according to the EFCC allegedly defrauded some persons on the pretence that he had an interest-yielding investment in agricultural export and dishonestly converted to his use, the aggregate sum of N200,000,000.00 belonging to one K. C. Akoson Investment Limited and Kenneth C. Maduakor by dishonestly representing to them that you will help them transfer the said money to their importers in China.

The EFCC said Toyosi, however, “expended the money for your personal use and committed an offence contrary to Sections 278 (1) (b) (f) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.”

The businessman denied the allegations and pleaded “not guilty” to the offences.

Consequently, prosecution counsel, G. C Akaogu, urged the court to remand the defendant in the EFCC’s custody for the continuation of the investigations of other petitions pending against him.

But the defendant’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo, prayed the court to remand the defendant to the Ikoyi Correctional facility while he also sought a date for the hearing of the bail application.

After listening to both counsels, Justice Lawal adjourned the matter to August 21, 2024, for the hearing of the bail application and also remanded the defendant in the Ikoyi Correctional facility.
