COVID-19: Minister lists techniques of knowing fake sanitizers

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has said a study carried out by a research institution in the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) has revealed that not all sanitisers in circulation are up to standard. Ehanire said this while answering questions on Tuesday at the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja. He also listed some ways on identifying standard sanitisers in the market. According to him, one of the best ways to identify a standard hand sanitizer is checking the NAFDAC number and ingredients used in producing the sanitiser.

“I will start by using the opportunity to issue an advisory on sanitiser. You will see a lot of sanitisers out in the market.

A study carried out by research institution in the Ministry of Health has shown not all of them are up to standard. “In buying sanitisers, there is an advisory I will like to share. You must look first of all at the NAFDAC number.

A sanitiser should have a NAFDAC number. Secondly, it should have a place where the ingredients are displayed. And among these ingredients, you must see that it contains a minimum of 60 percent alcohol. “If it is anything different from that, the sanitiser is not going to do the job you think it is doing. If the ingredients are not displayed it is not for you,”

PFN Reacts As Nigerians Knock Ibiyeomie Over Comments On Coronavirus

The Chairman, Lagos chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Sola Ore, on Tuesday, reacted to calls for sanction of Nigerian pastors making unfounded claims about the Coronavirus pandemic.

The latest of such controversial claims was made by David Ibiyeomie, founder and senior pastor of Salvation Ministries, who said the coronavirus is a scam.

Ibiyeomie, in a sermon on Sunday which went viral, said Nigeria doesn’t have the virus and even if it does, the figures released by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control was fake.

According to him, COVID-19 is rubbish and the government is merely using the deadly disease to embezzle funds. He added that Malaria had killed more Nigerians than coronavirus. Ibiyeomie’s comments have attracted condemnations from Nigerians.

Speaking in an interview with our stringer on Tuesday, Bishop Ore said, “There is freedom of speech and government cannot gag any pastor, though we men of God have to be careful of what we say and we have the freedom of speech.

“On the part of those that make unverified comments, the onus is on the government to call these people and find out where they got the information. I am sure such a person wouldn’t have spoken without getting his fact; he must have heard something from somewhere.

“You have to be sure of your facts before you speak. Also, the government should be transparent and sincere with the public.”

the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation have agreed to spend over N1bn on the quarantine and feeding of over 3,000 Nigerians awaiting evacuation in foreign countries.

The two organisations are expected to share the over N1bn cost of hotel accommodation and feeding of the returnees for 14 days on arrival in the country amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed this during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, TheMail mas reports.

The Federal Government had come under fire for asking prospective returnees to pay N290,000 for their isolation and feeding in hotels in Lagos and Abuja, ahead of their evacuation from the United States, United Kingdom, India, China, Thailand and Canada.

Specifically, the MFA, in a letter addressed to Nigerian missions abroad dated May 14, directed that all prospective evacuees must pay for their isolation and feeding before they could be airlifted.

The government had hinged its decision on the paucity of resources, noting that it could only support the 620 evacuees currently in quarantine.

But providing an update on Monday, Onyeama stated that many Nigerians had levelled various allegations against the Federal Government for asking the new batches of evacuees to pay for their isolation and feeding.
