RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE IBIBIOS VIS A VIS THE EFIK?

Hopefully, this will also do justice to the historical puzzle and conundrum about the true origin of some supposed "Ibibios" or "Akwa Ibom" groups and how they got to their current settlements.
We must realise that the fact that we now have the political construct called "Akwa Ibom" (which by the way is a heterogenous and motley crew of people) should not warrant us viewing all the people inside that contraption as one group sharing the same culture and traditions otherwise we would be misled into assuming for instance, that things like the Ekpe, Nsibidi etc. are the predominant culture of the entire people of that state.

Allow me to reiterate, albeit respectfully, that the Ekpe is not a culture of the Ibibio or even the Akwa Ibom people per se and that is because even the few "Akwa Ibom" people that play Ekpe today are descendants of the Efik nation who only migrated away from the Efik nation while the entire Efik Eburutu (or Iboku) group were still at Ibom (No connection to "Akwa Ibom") in Arochukwu.

You see, IBOKU (the ancestor of the Efik people) had at least 7 children namely;
i. Ibom Iboku.
ii. Otong Iboku*
iii. Atai Iboku.
iv. Mme Iboku.
v. Abayen Iboku.
vi. Enwang Iboku and
vii. Ebita Iboku.

*It is pertinent to note that Otong Iboku mentioned above got married to an Ibibio woman named "Ama" and together they had 7 children and these are the main groups that miscegenated towards present day Akwa Ibom and they left quite early, leaving the rest of the Eburutu group back in Ibom (Who would later migrate to Uruan and to other locations.)
They are as follows:

• EBRU OTONG IBOKU: One of the offsprings of Otong that migrated away from Ibom to form URUAN. (This gives us a clue as to why the Efiks, upon leaving Ibom in later years, chose to dwell in Uruan over a period of more than a century before they were unfortunately resisted by the Uruan people and summarily made to leave).
• NDUE OTONG IBOKU: Miscegenated into Oku Ndue Otong Ama in Uyo and further into Oku Iba Oku, now changed to "Oku Iboku" in present day ITU Local Government.
• MBANG OTONG IBOKU: This group moved into IBENO.
Mind you, Riverine Ibe

Sociopolitical Organization
Restricted title associations are important marks of prestige among the Ibibio. The principal women's society is the Ebre society. The principal men's society is the Ekpo society.
An interesting mask depicting a male white face (colonial) from the Ibibio of Cross River in Nigeria. This character was probably made to be perfomed in the context of the Ekpo society. The powerful Ekpo Society controls almost every facet of Ibibio life. The Ekpo, which is strictly for men, is technically in charge of initiations and directing ceremonies venerating ancestors, who are the most important influence in Ibibio culture. Masked Ekpo dancers’ direct funerals to insure that the dead receive the proper respect. If they do not, punishment can be swift and brutal, and the Ekpo, as practiced by the Ibibio, who number over one million, has sometimes been described as "police brutality," such is their stranglehold on political and social power. In fact, the Ekpo was so dominant during British occupation that colonial officials just relented and allowed the society to operate. Ekpo masks can be serene and beautiful, or fierce and frightening. Ibibio carvers are highly respected throughout the Niger Delta and Cross River areas, and they are often asked to carve masks for other groups, like the Boki, Anang, and Ogoni. The Ogoni, in fact, do not have an Ekpo Society, but enjoy Ekpo dances, and have, on occasion, purchased masks from Ibibio carvers.
