TOPIC:IRREVERSIBLE FATE

KEY VERSE:
“And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence” (Luke 16:26).

READ:LUKE 16:19-31

MESSAGE:
In thermodynamics, an irreversible process is one in which the system and its surroundings cannot return to their original state. The fuel consumed on a long journey cannot condense back into the fuel tank. We say something is irreversible when it cannot be undone.

Our text focuses on Lazarus, a beggar and the rich man who found themselves on the opposite side of eternity where their fate was irreversible. The rich man was cast into hell, a place of torment while Lazarus was carried into paradise. In hell, the rich man pleaded with Father Abraham to allow Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to quench his thirst. The patriarch declined because of the great gulf between them. Next, he pleaded that someone should be sent from heaven to warn his brothers to repent, lest they also end up in hell. Father Abraham replied that there were enough preachers on earth to do the job if only his brothers would listen.

The rich man did not go to hell because he was rich, but because he did not repent genuinely and cared not for the needy while on earth. Poor Lazarus apparently lived a holy life that qualified him for heaven.

Our study shows that God is not a respecter of persons. Repentance is the gateway to salvation and there is no repentance in the grave. The refusal of Father Abraham to send an angel or preacher from heaven to warn the brothers of the rich man on earth indicates the superiority of the word of God to angelic or personal revelation.

We should not postpone our own salvation. And once saved, we should preach to members of our families that are not saved while they are still alive.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
If repentance is allowed in hell, no soul will remain there.

TOPIC:RETRIBUTION FOR WICKEDNESS

KEY VERSE:
“They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn” ( Job 24:24).

READ:JOB 24:14-25

MESSAGE:
Although the wheel of justice seems to grind slowly, no action of man will go unrewarded, be it good or bad. Every act of wickedness committed in the secret or open, as long as it is not repented of, will attract punishment.

In today’s text, Job itemized the evils committed by the wicked. They include the murderers, who kill the poor and the needy, the thieves who rob, and the adulterers who dig through houses in the dark. The wicked is described as “terrors of the shadows of death” who ill-treat the barren and the widow and kill to protect themselves, in pursuit of power. However, they are also cursed in the earth because “wickedness shall be broken as a tree”. Their exaltation is just for a while; and they will be brought low. Their retribution will be calamitous because they will be taken and cut off from the way.

Happenings in the world today are heart-breaking. Wickedness is demonstrated without restraint and in some cases, justified. We are daily overwhelmed by reports of wicked acts by the high and low in the society. But God hates wickedness under any guise, and the Scriptures clearly state that, “Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished” (Proverbs 11:21). No sinner will escape God’s righteous judgment except they repent of their wickedness.

The wicked are warned of the danger of their actions and advised to quickly retrace their steps and surrender totally to Jesus Christ. Any other response will earn divine displeasure and attract grave consequences.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Wickedness pays only a disastrous wage.

TOPIC:A DIVINE FIREWALL

KEY VERSE:
“For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her” (Zechariah 2:5).

READ:ZECHARIAH 2:1-5

MESSAGE:
A Christian missionary and author, Kevin Bart, once shared a story of God’s protection during an outreach in the Ferraz de Vasconcelos area of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2006. He and his companions had been warned by their Brazilian friends of the danger posed in the area by a gang of criminals on motorcycles who attack people and sn**ch cars at gunpoint. The gang truly marched round Bart’s mission car for some time, but suddenly pulled back after looking inside the car. Instead, they attacked and sn**ched another car coming behind. According to Bart, “I do not know what they saw, but we believe they saw something from God that caused them to back off.”

In this revelation to Zechariah, God sent a message of hope, restoration and protection to Israel. Jerusalem, in particular, would expand and be inhabited by a multitude of people and cattle. Beyond the surveyor’s measure, Jerusalem was to become a city of “towns without walls.” What is more? The city and its people will enjoy divine protection because God Himself will be “a wall of fire” round about her and His glory will radiate in it.

God’s promises to enlarge and protect His people from danger are real and still reliable today. The Bible is replete with His promises of divine increase, protection and preservation for those who have received Him as their Father. He is the wall of fire around them. He protects and shields them from danger, hurt or attacks. In fulfilment of the Abrahamic covenant, He defends them in trouble.

God builds an unseen wall of fire around His people. You cannot enjoy the protection of the Wall if your life is not free from sin. Hence, to enjoy boundless increase and continued protection from God, all you need do is maintain a good relationship with Him always.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Those who keep God’s precepts enjoy His providence.
