The image below displays a rare and shocking accident, where a construction worker was impaled by a 24-inch (61 cm) metal rod that pierced straight through his body — injuring both his intestines and lungs.

The wound was life-threatening, but against the odds, doctors performed a meticulous, hours-long surgery and managed to save him.

A reminder of both the dangers faced by workers every day — and the extraordinary power of modern medicine.
