First American Pope Elected: Pope Leo XIV
In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been elected as the new pope, marking the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement followed the traditional signal of white smoke rising above the Sistine Chapel, indicating that the College of Cardinals had reached a decision on the second day of the conclave.
Pope Leo XIV, 69, hails from Chicago, Illinois. A leader with extensive global experience, he spent much of his early ministry as a missionary in South America and later served as bishop in Peru. Prior to his election, he headed a key Vatican department responsible for appointing bishops worldwide.
