Bayelsa Police Dismiss Reports of Bandits Attack, Describe Claims as Fake News
The Bayelsa State Police Command has dismissed reports of bandits invading schools in Yenagoa, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The panic began on June 5, 2026, after a Facebook post alleged that militants had arrested bandits in Bayelsa and were demanding a ransom of N50 million for each suspect.
Later, another reports emerged claiming that bandits were present in Bayelsa State. The report quickly spread, causing fear among residents and prompting many parents to withdraw their children from schools in Ogbogoro, Polaku, and nearby communities.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, deployed security personnel, including the School Protection Squad, Tactical Teams and the Drone Unit, to assess the situation and reassure residents.
Security operatives visited several schools, including Ijaw National Academy in Kaiama, Gbarainowei Grammar School in Okolobiri and Fun-Tari Academy in Sabagreia, while patrols were intensified across affected areas.
The Police Command said the situation is calm and normal activities have resumed. Residents were advised to ignore unverified reports and obtain information only from official sources.
Police spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command's emergency lines.
