Rivers Assembly Takes Bold Step on Climate Action — Deputy Speaker Leads Push for Climate Change Bill
The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken a decisive step towards environmental sustainability as it gave first reading to the Rivers State Climate Change Bill, 2025, during its 20th legislative sitting on Friday.
The Bill, jointly sponsored by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, and the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, seeks to provide a legal framework for the mainstreaming of climate change actions and establish the Rivers State Council on Climate Change.
Presenting the Bill before the House, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, emphasized that the Bill, when passed, would serve as a roadmap for coordinated and sustained climate action in Rivers State. He said the Bill demonstrates the Assembly’s commitment to addressing the environmental challenges threatening the state’s ecosystem.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Amaewhule, commended the initiative and urged Members to study the Bill thoroughly ahead of the second reading, promising a robust and inclusive debate in the next legislative sitting.
Meanwhile, the House also referred two petitions one against Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited and another against Heirs Energies to the Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions for investigation and revert back to the House.
