THE BABY THEY BURIED WAS NOT HER BABY
PART 2 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
Three days before the burial…
The rain had been falling heavily since evening.
Thunder shook the windows of the small hospital room as Amara lay on the bed, sweating and crying.
“Please… please, Doctor,” she whispered. “I can't take it anymore.”
The nurse beside her smiled reassuringly.
“Just a little more. Your baby is almost here.”
Amara grabbed the nurse's hand.
“Is my husband outside?”
“Yes. He's waiting.”
“Please tell him I'm asking for him.”
The nurse nodded and walked toward the door.
But before she could open it, Amara heard a baby's cry.
A loud, beautiful cry.
Her eyes widened.
“My baby…”
The doctor smiled.
“Congratulations, Mrs. Okafor. It's a boy.”
For a moment, Amara forgot every pain she had experienced.
She began to cry.
“A boy?”
“Yes.”
The nurse wrapped the newborn in a white cloth and placed him gently in Amara's arms.
Amara stared at his tiny face.
“My son…”
She kissed his forehead.
“You finally came.”
The baby opened his little mouth and cried again.
Amara laughed through her tears.
“You're so loud already.”
Then she noticed something.
Behind the baby's left ear was a small black birthmark.
She touched it gently.
“Look at you…”
She smiled.
“I will always know you by this mark.”
A few minutes later, Chinedu entered the room.
His face was unusually pale.
But when he saw the baby, he smiled.
“Amara…”
She looked up at him.
“Come and see your son.”
Chinedu walked closer.
He looked at the baby.
Then his smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But Amara noticed.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
“You don't look happy.”
“I am happy.”
He forced a smile.
“Very happy.”
Amara handed him the baby.
“Hold him.”
Chinedu hesitated.
Then he took the child.
The moment he saw the birthmark behind the baby's ear, something changed in his expression.
Fear.
Amara didn't understand it.
“Chinedu?”
He quickly looked away.
“What?”
“Why are you looking at him like that?”
“I'm just surprised.”
“Surprised by what?”
“Nothing, Amara.”
He handed the baby back.
Then his phone rang.
He stepped outside.
“Hello?”
Amara couldn't hear the person on the other end.
But she could see her husband's face.
His voice became low.
“What?”
A pause.
“No. You can't do that.”
Another pause.
Chinedu looked through the glass window toward Amara.
“Listen to me carefully.”
His voice was trembling.
“Nobody can know about this.”
Amara froze.
She couldn't hear the reply.
Chinedu turned his back toward the room.
“I said nobody.”
Then he ended the call.
He stood there for several seconds.
When he returned, Amara was watching him.
“Who was that?”
“My friend.”
“At this time of night?”
“He needed help.”
Amara frowned.
“Chinedu, what is going on?”
“Nothing.”
“You've said that three times tonight.”
He smiled weakly.
“You just gave birth. You need to rest.”
But Amara couldn't sleep.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Around 2:00 a.m., the nurse came into the room.
“Madam, I need to take the baby for a few minutes.”
Amara immediately held him tighter.
“Why?”
“We need to check him again.”
“But the doctor already checked him.”
“Yes, but it's routine.”
Amara reluctantly released the baby.
“Please don't take long.”
The nurse smiled.
“I won't.”
She carried the baby away.
Amara watched until the door closed.
Then she looked at her husband.
“Chinedu?”
“Yes?”
“Promise me something.”
“What?”
“Whatever is happening…”
She swallowed.
“Don't let anybody take my child away from me.”
Chinedu stared at her.
He didn't answer.
“Chinedu?”
Finally, he whispered:
“I promise.”
But he was lying.
Because less than ten minutes later, Chinedu quietly left the room.
He walked down the hospital corridor.
At the end of the corridor stood the same nurse who had taken Amara's baby.
Beside her was an old woman wearing a dark wrapper.
The nurse looked around nervously.
“Are you sure about this?”
Chinedu nodded.
“We don't have a choice.”
The old woman shook her head.
“There is always a choice.”
Chinedu stepped closer.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
She looked him directly in the eyes.
“If you do this, that woman's life will never be the same.”
Chinedu's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“And the child?”
Chinedu looked toward the room where Amara was lying.
Then he whispered:
“The child cannot stay with her.”
Suddenly, a sound came from behind them.
Footsteps.
All three turned.
Someone was standing at the other end of the corridor.
Someone who had heard everything.
The nurse's face went white.
“Who is that?”
The figure slowly stepped out of the darkness.
And when Chinedu saw who it was, he nearly collapsed.
“You?”
The person stared at him.
Then said:
“Chinedu… what have you done?”
TO BE CONTINUED…
Who was standing in the corridor? And why did Chinedu believe Amara's baby could not stay with her?
