56 days after their abduction in Oyo State Nigerian Presidency announced the successful rescue of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers who had been held captive.

According to a statement released on Friday, July 10, 2026, the victims regained their freedom during an intelligence-led military operation carried out by the Nigerian Armed Forces. The operation reportedly led to the arrest of several suspects, while other members of the criminal group were neutralised.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended the military and security agencies for the successful operation, describing it as a major breakthrough in the country's fight against kidnapping and insecurity. He also expressed relief that the prolonged ordeal of the victims had come to an end.

The Nigerian Army said the rescue followed weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations targeting the kidnappers' hideouts.

King Amachree Sport Academy, Obuama, has emerged as the 2026 Milo Basketball Boys Champions, becoming the first school from Rivers State to win the prestigious national title.

The academy staged a remarkable comeback in the final, defeating defending champions Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State, after suffering a defeat to the same team during the group stage.

Owned by the Amanyanabo of Elem Kalabari, HRM King Mujahid Asari Dokubo, Dabaye Amachree I, the academy’s triumph marks Rivers State’s first-ever Milo Basketball Boys Championship.
