Dreams in Ruins In Borna Boy Community Primary School and others Left to Rot in Rivers Communities
A recent fact-finding inspection has laid bare the severe infrastructural decay plaguing communities in Rivers State Particularly Ahoada West Local Government Area, as critical educational Projects lie completely abandoned and in ruins.
During a fact finding of the area, our team was confronted with the harsh reality of neglected public works, most notably the dilapidated Primary and Secondary Schools in Egbema-Ogbogolo BornaBoy Community, Uyakama, Joinkrama and other communities.
A Failed Promise of Education in the Egbema -Ogbogolo community.
Specifically Egbema-Ogbogolo Primary School, the site is a shadow of what was intended to be a beacon of learning. According to a project signboard still standing on the premises, the construction of the educational block was a joint initiative under the Nigeria-European Union Cooperation.
Today, the reality on the ground is starkly different:
Structural Collapse: The building's roof is severely damaged and entirely blown off in several sections, exposing rotting wooden trusses to the elements.
Uninhabitable Classrooms: The interiors are completely stripped bare. There are no ceilings, doors, windows, or desks—only debris and stained, crumbling concrete walls.
Overgrown Grounds: Thick weeds and tall grass have swallowed the compound, making the school environment completely unsafe and inaccessible for any meaningful educational activity.
For years, the students of Uyakama Primary School faced a daunting reality: pursuing an education in a facility that was crumbling around them.
A Legacy of Neglect
The picture of the school's current state. Classrooms were little more than hollow shells— roofless, windowless, and overtaken by thick, wild vegetation.
Structural Decay: Corroded rafters were exposed to the elements, and walls were stained with years of dampness and mold.
Safety Hazards: Walkways were cracked and blocked by overgrowth, making the environment more like an abandoned ruin than a place of study.
Lack of Resources: Inner rooms were empty of furniture, with dirt floors and crumbling plaster defining the learning environment.
The Cost of Dilapidated as our team worked through weed-infested, ruined sites highlights a broader, systemic issue Dilapidated standard of schools in the region. When critical infrastructure like schools are left to rot, it is the local communities that pay the ultimate price—denied both their basic right to a safe learning environment and the security necessary for community development.
As the inspection concludes, the pressing question for the residents of Egbema-Ogbogolo, Joinkrama (JK) and Uyakama remains: will these schools be revived, or will they continue to serve as monuments to broken promises.
Other Overview of The Findings.
The common theme across all four documented locations is a profound state of disrepair.
These are not merely aged buildings; they are, for the most part, abandoned ruins.
The physical state of the structures indicates long-term abandonment.
We saw:
Structural Failures: Massive roof collapses, leaving only structural walls standing.
Environmental Takeover: Heavy, unchecked overgrowth of grass, bushes, and even mature trees inside and directly around buildings.
In many cases, nature is the most prominent feature of the site.
Lost Utility: Windows, doors, and all internal fixtures are missing, leaving only skeletal concrete shells. The buildings offer no shelter or security.
Safety Hazards: Unstable walls and collapsing roofs make these sites dangerous.
Location-by-Location Assessment
Uyakama Primary School.
State: The multiple views confirm this school is completely dilapidated. The upper sections show a building with its roof entirely gone, leaving only the wall frames. The ground-level views show interior corridors and rooms completely choked with grass and weeds, proving they have not been used for their intended purpose in years.
Jk Boys Secondary School:
State: This site is in an advanced state of nature reclamation. The multiple drone views, particularly the top-down and aerial shots, show buildings that are roofless and structurally weak. Overgrowth is dense, filling the interior spaces of the buildings and completely surrounding them.
The drone views reveal a vast complex of buildings, almost all of which are missing roofs. One key aerial view shows the foundation outlines of other structures, suggesting a much larger facility that is now lost. The site is nearly swallowed by the surrounding forest and grass.
While also roofless and heavily overgrown, this site shows a distinct difference. There is a cluster of people visible in some of the drone images, standing near large piles of sand. This suggests a potential attempt to reclaim or renovate this facility, or perhaps a clearing of the space for alternative use.
However, the existing buildings are currently uninhabitable.
Conclusion
The images document a systematic failure in the maintenance of essential public services. The complete loss of functional schools and healthcare facilities directly impacts a community's ability to educate its children and provide medical care.
The state of these buildings suggests that they have been neglected for at least a decade, with little to no recent intervention.
These images provide powerful visual evidence of an infrastructure crisis in Rivers State..
