Before Eighteen
Episode Fifteen
(The days when we were alive)

Dr. Stella came to our house very early the next morning, it was strange as I woke up to see her with Mama in the sitting room, Mama sat on the sofa, the one closest to the TV, the one that was Papa’s favorite…
I walked in to disrupt their conversation…
“Good morning Mama…Good morning Ma”
They answered me in unison, as though they had practiced it… They talked in low voices, the way people speak when they didn’t want it to be heard by others…
Mama once told me people speak in low tones because even the walls have ears and could expose the discussion… But the way Dr. Stella spoke, I felt sorry for them, for their conversation because even before the wall, I heard everything from the kitchen where I sat with a broom clutched between my hands.
I swept the kitchen and washed the plates, and later I swept the palour, They still sat there together, side by side… Dr. Stella’s perfume filled the place, she smelled nice… Like people of good Fortune, but still keeping her voice low was hard to achieve.
“It is normal since you’re pregnant”
“But I didn’t experience this in my last pregnancy” Mama said
“It is normal my friend, the light bleeding is normal… See, the embryo usually implants to the uterine 6 to 12 days after conception… Its normal”
I looked at Mama’s face, she still looked worried, she needed more explanations…
