DEVELOPING STORY: FUBARA QUITS RACE

● Tears, Shock Across Rivers As Governor Steps Aside, Backs APC Unity;
● Says “Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom.”

By PHC Telegraph

There was shock, anger and deep disappointment across Rivers State Wednesday night after Governor Siminalayi Fubara formally withdrew from the governorship race, citing the need for peace, unity and stability in the State.

The dramatic decision came shortly after reports emerged that Pastor Tonye Cole, a gubernatorial aspirant, had also stepped aside from the contest, effectively leaving the field open for what many political observers now describe as “another Ikwerre succession.”

Across Port Harcourt and several parts of the State, supporters of the governor reacted with grief and disbelief as news of the withdrawal spread.

Former Governor of Rivers State and and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has admitted he enjoys the media spotlight, saying it makes him happy.

Wike who held a press briefing in Abuja Wednesday said he loved being on the lips of everybody including the media across the country.

The Minister's latest brief is coming against growing public concerns about Nigeria's democracy and attempts by some persons to turn the country into a one-party state.

The Minister denied sponsoring candidates that are gunning for the governorship ticket in Rivers State, claiming that he has neither anointed Kingsley Chindah, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives nor Alabo George Kelly.

Developing Story: Tensions Rise in Gulf as Iranian Vessels Transit Strategic Waters Unchallenged
By Ogbonna Nwuke

Reports of vessels linked to Iran transiting sensitive waterways in the Gulf without interception have heightened tensions and triggered fresh debate over maritime security in the region.

The movements, said to have occurred within or near the Strait of Hormuz, come amid an already fragile standoff involving the United States Navy and Iranian forces. The narrow passage remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, handling a significant share of global crude shipments.

U.S. officials have not described the situation as a breakdown of control, but acknowledge that the operating environment in the Gulf has become increasingly complex. Naval assets under the U.S. Fifth Fleet continue to monitor activity across the region, with an emphasis on ensuring freedom of navigation.

Silence from Tehran: Calculated Defiance or Prelude to Confrontation?
By PHC Telegraph

A curious quiet has descended over Iran.
In the face of renewed overtures and shifting deadlines from Donald Trump, Tehran has chosen neither to engage nor escalate publicly. No formal rejection. No acceptance. Just silence.
For seasoned observers of U.S.–Iran relations, that silence may be the message.
A Diplomatic Pause—or Strategic Signal?
Washington’s recent posture has been anything but steady. Signals suggesting a possible return to talks have been followed by hardened rhetoric, including deadlines that appear to have come and gone without consequence.
Compounding the uncertainty is the reported cancellation of a planned regional trip by JD Vance—a move analysts interpret as a sign that diplomatic pathways may not be as open as initially suggested.
Against this backdrop, Iran’s refusal to respond publicly is unlikely to be accidental.

DEVELOPING STORY: What Taiwo Oyedele’s Elevation Means for Nigeria’s Economy - An Analysis
By PHC Telegraph

The appointment of Taiwo Oyedele as Nigeria’s new Finance Minister marks more than a personnel change — it signals a potential philosophical shift in economic management under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Oyedele is widely regarded as a tax policy strategist, not a traditional macroeconomic manager. That distinction matters.
1. A Tax-First Economic Strategy:
Oyedele’s background suggests a stronger emphasis on: Expanding the tax base; Improving revenue collection efficiency; Reducing dependence on oil earnings. This could accelerate ongoing tax reforms, but also raises concerns about: Increased tax burden on businesses and citizens; compliance enforcement in an already strained economy

2. Shift from Market Stabilisation to Revenue Mobilisation
Under Wale Edun, policy leaned toward:
Exchange rate reforms, investor confidence building; fiscal restructuring.

DEVELOPING STORY: Tinubu Sacks Finance Minister Wale Edun in Sudden Cabinet Shake-Up
By PHC Telegraph

Nigeria’s economic leadership was jolted on Tuesday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in what officials describe as a strategic cabinet reshuffle.

The presidency has moved swiftly to name Taiwo Oyedele as his replacement, signaling what insiders suggest could be a shift in economic direction at a critical moment for Africa’s largest economy.

While no formal allegations or misconduct have been linked to Edun’s removal, the decision comes amid mounting economic pressure tied to the administration’s reform programme, including subsidy removal, currency liberalisation, and ongoing fiscal restructuring.

Government sources say the shake-up is aimed at “enhancing coordination and accelerating delivery,” but the timing has raised questions about internal assessments of policy outcomes.

BENIN ELECTION VICTORY: TINUBU CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT-ELECT WADAGNI
Although he is yet to take the oath of office the 49 year-old Minister of Finance lands the "big job" through popular ballot as his country's new president

By PHC Telegraph

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined other world leaders to congratulate the young and vibrant President-elect of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, on his electoral victory.

Wadagni, the country's Minister of Finance, secured an overwhelming majority of the vote in the presidential election held on April 12.

President Tinubu said in a letter that Wadagni's victory “reflects the trust the Beninese people" have in his vision and his "distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance.”

Tinubu stated that Nigeria and the Republic of Benin “share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation.”

He said looked forward to working with Wadagni to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries.

Amaechi: They Have No Shame, What Do You Tell People Like This?
By PHC Telegraph

Rotimi Amaechi, one-time Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation has come down hard on Nigeria's current leaders, saying these people have no shame.

Amaechi who addressed party faithful said if you call them thieves, they say they are thieves; if you call them land grabbers, they agree they are land grabbers; what do you want me to say to people like this?"

He accused the administration of embarking on economic policies that are sapping the people dry, wondering how any rational government could impose 30% tax on companies.

The former governor hinted the only thing that matters to the President and his fellow travellers is money.

He said it was time for the ADC to get together and pick a viable presidential candidate, warning that only a unity of purpose and determination among ADC leaders can guarantee victory against Tinubu and his supporters.
