Stop being the emergency plan for other people's poor planning.
It's become too common for people to forget to plan: for their rent, their children's school fees, vehicle maintenance, their healthcare. No buffer, no backup, no thought that a rainy day could come.
Then the rainy day comes.
And suddenly it's you, the one who budgeted, saved, delayed gratification and made sacrifices, that's expected to absorb the consequences of someone else's choices. Just because you're family. Just because you're a good friend. Just because you "have it together."
Being the responsible one and being everyone's backup plan are not the same thing.
Generosity is a virtue. But generosity that quietly erodes your own future isn't generosity. It's a wealth transfer wearing a nice-guy costume.
You can love people and still refuse to be their safety net.
You can help and still have limits.
You can say no and still be a good person.
Protect your peace. Protect your plan. Your future is not collateral for someone else's carelessness.
Let everyone learn to build their own emergency fund today.
Dr. O.K. Oruma is a financial and personal planning advocate, helping people build resilience before the rainy day comes.
