A fire outbreak has destroyed goods and properties worth millions of naira at the Creek Road Market, particularly the section relocated to Number Three Field in Old Port Harcourt Township, Rivers State.

Affected traders are currently assessing the extent of the damage and counting their losses.

The cause of the fire has not been officially established, with traders and eyewitnesses reportedly puzzled over what triggered the blaze.

There were no confirmed reports of fatalities as of the time of filing the report.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike made the declaration while addressing members of the Apo Traders Association in Abuja.

He said the FCT is his place of work, while Rivers State is his home, adding that losing either territory would raise questions about his performance and position as minister.

Wike said he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, a day after the presidential election, if Tinubu loses in both Rivers and the FCT.

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.

Mr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and urged citizens to use the occasion to demonstrate unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

President Bola Tinubu is also expected to address the nation on Thursday, October 1, as part of activities marking the Independence Anniversary.

Meanwhile, in line with the approach adopted by the Federal Government for this year’s national celebration, the Rivers State Government has decided that there will be no Independence Day parade in the state.

In a statement, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, said the anniversary will instead be observed in a modest and purposeful manner, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion and the shared responsibility of building a stronger Nigeria.

While felicitating with the people of the state and Nigerians at home and abroad on the significant national occasion, the Rivers State Government encouraged the people to mark the day with patriotism, reflection and renewed commitment to peace, unity and progress.

A resolution has been reached by the Rivers State House of Assembly to issue a warrant of arrest for the Vice Chancellor of PAMO University of Medical Sciences in line with the recommendation of the Adhoc Committee on the investigation of scholarship funds to the university.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Dumle Maol presented the report today as the House among other recommendations urged the State government to set up a committee to recover all unaccounted funds in possession of the PAMO University and deposit them in the Consolidated Revenue Account of the State.

The resolution came following the refusal of the PAMO University VC to appear before the Adhoc Committee after several invitations, to explain how money given to the university under the scholarship scheme was expended.

The Adhoc Committee Report stated how the university received over 29 billion Naira from the State government with no corresponding Students enrolment, giving credence to the reason behind the Vice Chancellor's refusal to honour the invitations.

Commenting on the Report, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule said that though the intentions of the government in entering into the scholarship scheme agreement was good, the implementation was wrong.

Mr. Amaewhule frowned at the situation where documents presented by the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, and the Office of the Accountant-General were at variance, restating the determination of the Assembly to do the right thing irrespective of whose ox is gored.

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the NDC for the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, has denied claims by the state government that he left behind 123.77 million dollars in debt when he left office in 2014.

In a statement on his X handle, Obi said the figure represents the total amount approved for multilateral development programmes and should not be described as debt personally incurred by him.

He said the facilities were mainly World Bank and IFAD programmes negotiated by the Federal Government, with states accessing the funds through subsidiary arrangements.

Obi cited Debt Management Office records which, he said, showed Anambra’s external debt stood at about 30 million dollars when he left office in March 2014.

He also claimed he left more than 150 million dollars in state investments, which could have generated about 10 million dollars annually.

Obi maintained that Anambra was in a strong financial position at the end of his tenure and said he would not engage in further exchanges over the issue.

The Rivers State Police Command has extended the deadline for enforcement against commercial vehicles with unauthorised tinted glasses to October 31, 2026.

The Command announced this in a statement signed by its spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adewole Adepoju.

The extension followed appeals from transport union leaders to give affected operators more time to comply.

The Police said enforcement and sanctions will begin from November 1, urging operators to use the grace period to remove unauthorised tinted glasses and regularise their vehicles.

The Command also reiterated that tricycles (keke) must not operate beyond 10 p.m.

It warned police officers against extortion and harassment during the exercise and urged transport operators to cooperate with security personnel.

A social commentator Dr, Emmanuel Osilem who stated this on our political programme, Democratic Platform stressed that the alliance to form a political bloc to unseat the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC would make no sense to Nigerians if the political groups did not convince the people on their plans to change the narratives.

Dr. Osilem explained that the aim of the plan to form a coalition should not be centred on power acquisition but service to the people.

He lamented that the people have been politically docile by the ruling class through ethnicity, religion and hunger.

The public affairs analyst noted that for any form of merger to succeed the parties should choose wisely among them, the candidate who would deliver.

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi has released fourteen inmates from Port Harcourt Maximum Security Custodial Centre as part is of the 2026/2027 Legal Year Opening ceremonies.

In his address, Justice Chibuzor-Amadi said the exercise is in pursuant to the provision of section one of the criminal justice release from custody for those who have over stayed the number of years prescribed by the law if they had been convicted of the crime they were alleged to have committed and those whose case has been stalled due to the fault of a government agency or even the judiciary.

The Chief Judge used the opportunity to advise official of correctional facility to avoid releasing confidential information especially about the list of inmates to be released to the inmates to reduce tension associated with such action.

Addressing the released inmates, the Chief Judge of Rivers State advised them to become ambassadors of peace and good life. He reminded them of the political season and cautioned them against been used by politicians to cause trouble.

The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Rivers State, Mr. Richard Moses-Williams commended the efforts of the Rivers State judiciary led by the chief Judge, saying that the importance of the gaol delivery exercise cannot be over emphasized.

The absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, from the country at the same time, has been described as unhealthy for administration and a violation of the 1999 constitution, as amended.

Speaking with our correspondent, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Friday Nkeeh, said the absence of the two principal officers, means that certain key decisions cannot taken to address any emergency situation in the country.

Mr. NKeeh emphasized that President Tinubu should have handed over power to the Vice President before proceeding on his annual vacation, in line with the provisions of the constitution.

On his part, an expert in Public Law at the Rivers State University, Professor Ritchard Nwokocha, explained that the non-transmission of power by President Tinubu to Vice President Shettima before proceeding on vacation, amounts to a breach of the constitution.

Professor emphasized that with the absence of the two key officers, no major administrative decision can be taken in the country.

President Tinubu is presently on vacation outside the country, while Vice President Shettima is currently in the United States of America, attending the United Nations’ General Assembly in New York.

The Rivers State Police Command has denied allegations that Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju grabbed or facilitated the grabbing of land belonging to residents of Victory Estate, Rumuosi, Obio/Akpor LGA.

In a statement signed by the Command’s PPRO, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the police said officers were initially deployed in April 2025 to provide security for a court bailiff executing a judgment in a land case.

The Command said the ex*****on was halted after Victory Estate residents objected, prompting an investigation and verification of the judgment and survey plan by the Surveyor-General of Rivers State.

According to the police, the survey confirmed that the judgment covered land in Rumuagholu and did not extend to Victory Estate, Rumuosi. The Command consequently described the ex*****on on the estate as wrongful.

The police said some persons were recommended for prosecution, adding that a nine-count charge has been filed before the Rivers State High Court.

The Command maintained that CP Adepoju neither acquired nor took possession of any land belonging to Victory Estate and said it would allow the court to determine the issues in a separate suit currently before it.
