PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – July 8, 2025 – In a significant move to sanitize the journalism profession and curb the proliferation of unqualified practitioners, the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by Chairman Comrade Paul Bazia, officially flagged off its membership revalidation exercise on Monday. The initiative is a direct response to a directive from the NUJ National Secretariat, aimed at enhancing professionalism and accountability within the media landscape.

Speaking at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Comrade Bazia emphasized that the comprehensive revalidation process is critical for "checking the activities of quacks in the Journalism Profession." He disclosed that the National Secretariat has already launched a dedicated website for registration, instructing all State Councils to revalidate members across their various chapels.

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – July 11, 2025 – Two senior officials of the Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, previously declared wanted by the police in connection with the alleged assault on the council administrator, Goodluck Iheanachor, have surrendered to authorities Africa Update reports.

Hector Ekakita, the Chief Security Officer of the LGA, and Aloni Olodi, the Chief of Staff, reported to the Rivers State Police Command in Port Harcourt on Thursday, July 10, 2025, after weeks of evading police invitations. Their surrender follows a police declaration issued on July 6, 2025, branding them wanted for attempted murder, assault, and theft.

The suspects are accused of leading a group of approximately 30 youths who allegedly stormed the Ahoada East council headquarters three weeks prior. During the invasion, Administrator Goodluck Iheanachor was reportedly physically assaulted and forced to sign a resignation letter under duress.

A mother of four, Zainab Buhari, has dragged her husband, Babangida Ibrahim before a Sharia Court sitting at Rigasa, Kaduna , Kaduna State, for subjecting her to dehumanising treatment.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Zainab told the court that her husband always beat her and leave her and their children with no food.

“He grabs my neck to suffocate me, squeezes my breast hard and demand for s*x

“I take care of our children’s school fees, feeding, clothing and other needs.

“Whenever I run to my parents, they begs me to return to my matrimonial home,” she said.

The defendant denied all the allegations brought against him.

The judge, Malam Salisu Abubakar Tureta, ordered Zainab to present her witnesses in court. He thus adjourned the case for further hearing.

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – July 13, 2025 – An Air Peace flight arriving from Lagos experienced a runway excursion after landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, on Sunday morning. All passengers and crew aboard the aircraft were safely evacuated without any reported injuries, Africa Update reports.

The incident involved Air Peace Flight P47190. Following its landing, the aircraft reportedly veered slightly off the paved runway surface.

Confirming the event, Osifo-Whiskey Efe, spokesperson for Air Peace, released a statement reassuring the public. "Air Peace confirms that its Flight P47190, operating from Lagos to Port Harcourt this morning, had a runway excursion after landing safely at the Port Harcourt International Airport," the statement read.

The airline emphasized the prompt and calm disembarkation of all individuals onboard. "The aircraft veered slightly off the runway without any damage.

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – July 13, 2025 – The lawmaker representing Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Cyril Hart, has formally called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish two additional state constituencies in Rivers State. In a letter dated July 7, 2025, and received by INEC on July 10, Hart specifically requested the creation of Degema State Constituency II and Bonny State Constituency II, citing critical constitutional provisions as the foundation for his demand.

In his appeal, Hart referenced Section 114 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates INEC to periodically review state constituencies at intervals of not less than ten years.
