The night appears dark because:
1. *Earth's rotation*: The Earth rotates on its axis, causing different parts of the planet to face towards or away from the Sun. When the Sun is below the horizon, it's nighttime.
2. *Lack of direct sunlight*: During nighttime, the Sun's direct light doesn't reach the area, resulting in darkness.
3. *Atmospheric scattering*: Even though some sunlight is scattered by the atmosphere, it's not enough to illuminate the night sky like it does during the day.
However, the night isn't completely dark. We can still see:
- *Moonlight*: The Moon reflects sunlight, illuminating the night sky.
- *Starlight*: Distant stars and celestial objects emit light, visible to us on Earth.
- *Artificial lighting*: Human-made light sources, like streetlights and building lights, also illuminate the night.
So, while the night may appear dark, it's not entirely without light!
