Nigerian Senate Approves Creation of 12 New States

In a historic move to promote national integration and enhance grassroots development, the Nigerian Senate has approved the creation of 12 new states across the six geo-political zones of the country.

This groundbreaking resolution, passed during the final reading of the Senate session, follows an extensive nationwide consultation conducted by the Senate Committee on State Creation. The decision aims to address long-standing demands for equity, representation, and inclusivity in the federal structure.

Here are the proposed new states:

South West:

Ijebu State (from Ogun State)

Ibadan State (from Oyo State)

South East:

Anim State (from parts of Anambra and Imo States)

Adada State (from Enugu State)

South South:

Toru-Ibe State (from parts of Ondo, Edo, and Delta States)

Obolo State (from Akwa Ibom State)

North East:

Savanna State (from Borno State)

Amana State (from Adamawa State)

North West:

Tiga State (from Kano State)

Gurara State (from Southern Kaduna)

North Central:

Okura State (from Kogi State)

Apa State (from Benue State)

The Senate described the move as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, setting the stage for more balanced development, improved access to governance, and stronger unity among the federating units.

An official gazette confirming the creation of the new states is expected to be released soon.

Construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria PLC has opened the newly-built Iriebe Flyover at Tap Junction along Port Harcourt - Aba Expressway for vehicular movement.

Our correspondent reports that this followed a live field coverage on the Port Harcourt - Aba Expressway by “My Dormot” crew earlier on Thursday.

During the programme, the Chairman of Commercial Drivers Welfare Association, CDWA, CHRISTOPHER EZEALI, had pleaded for complete access to enable free flow of traffic.

Similarly, other respondents asked Julius Berger workers to return to site and complete the ground work on the place.

Our correspondent reports that the Julius Berger construction workers have returned to site.

Supreme Court confirms death sentence on farmer who resisted Fulani herdsman attacker

Sunday Jackson a farmer who was violently attacked by a Fulani herdsman with a knife, is to die by hanging.

Despite injuries he sustained, Jackson overpowered his attacker, wresting the weapon from him and stabbed him as well following which his attacker died.

However in a gross travesty of Justice, Jackson was sentenced to death in 2021 after being in prison for seven years.

Regrettably today the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence 10 years after.

This is despite a constitutional infraction notable in the judgment of the High Court of Yola that was appealed.

The statement of facts of the Appellant’s brief of argument was that “the defendant testified for himself on the 27th day of February, 2020 and the matter was adjourned to the 27th day of August 2020 for the adoption of final written addresses of counsel to the prosecution and the defence. Judgment was delivered on the 10th day of February, 2021.”

An ordinary calculation of the time between the adoption of final addresses of counsel on August 27, 2020 and the delivery of judgment on February 10, 2021 amounts to in excess of 167 days.

The 1999 constitution was amended to afford expeditious dispensation of justice to litigants by the prescription of 90 days within which a judgment must be delivered from close of final addresses.

Judgments so rendered out of time are void or, as the Administration of Criminal Justice Act provides, are voidable if miscarriage of justice was occasioned thereby.

The facts of this case are a textbook case of miscarriage of justice: In the first place Mr Sunday Jackson was held awaiting trial for capital punishment for several years – a trial that essentially comprised of no more than five sittings. Instead of a five-day trial, he spent six years in custody in a non-controversial trial in which he did not deny that the death of the deceased occurred as a result of an altercation.

This afternoon, a bus belonging to Ebonyi State Transport Corporation was involved in a fatal accident along Portharcourt - Enugu Expressway (Ohiya mechanic village axis).The ill fated bus somersaulted over four times while five persons lost their lives in the accident.

Reports claimed the driver of the bus who only sustained minor injuries dozed off while driving.

Other survivors of the crash are currently receiving treatment at FMC, Umuahia while the bodies of the victims have been deposited at FMC Morgue...
