5 HAIR SECRETS FOR HEALTHIER HAIR

The irony of this title is that there is really no secret to get healthy hair. It isn't like a thousand years old complicated recipe passed down within a family generation.
Healthy hair is well cared hair. Healthy hair is for everyone. Healthy hair means long hair. Your hair can be healthy.

HERE ARE 5 SECRETS FOR HEALTHY HAIR

• Wash when necessary - dirt hinders proper hair growth. Dirt will clog the pores not allowing nutrient to get to the scalp and also affects the effects of sebum. It is recommended to wash at least every two weeks but if you feel your scalp feels clean enough then you can wash when necessary.

• Deep condition every wash day - deep conditioning is an essential step on wash days. Doing this help add intense moisture or strength to hair strands, thereby reducing breakage and improving your hair's elasticity.

• Scalp oil- our scalp produce an oil sebum. If the sebum produced by your scalp is enough,extra oil is not needed but if it isn't,then scalp stimulating oil can be applied. There are several oils that stimulates the scalp such as tea tree oil, peppermint oil, rosehip oil, olive oil, coconut oil e.t.c

• Moisturize - This is essential to achieving a healthy hair. Moisturized hair reduces dryness, which in turn reduces breakage and less breakage equals length retention. Length retention equal long and healthy hair.

• Protect your hair with silk/satin- sleeping with a cotton pillowcase without wearing protection causes friction and leads to breakage. This doesn't mean you will wake up with your hair all over your pillow/bed. This might be noticable on wash days with broken pieces of hair all over your bathroom floor. So it is important to sleep with your hair in a bonnet or use satin/silk pillowcase and sheets.

Rome wasn't built in a day,so if you're new to these practices, take them one step at a time. You can start by washing your hair every 3 weeks or 2 weeks,instead of going as long as one month plus, wash two times every month. Moisturize twice per week and if a bonnet doesn't work for you,use a scarf.

A deep conditioner is different from a regular conditioner.
A deep conditioner intensely penetrates the hair strands to help nourish & restore the hair.

Our hair goes through a lot from styling, to detangling to heat exposure (sun and styling tools) to other harsh weather conditions.
A deep conditioner contains more moisturizing ingredients and humectants. They are usually thicker than a regular conditioner. They should contain humectants, emollients.

Here are some benefits of deep conditioning
• Prevents and reduces hair breakage caused by protein/moisture overload
• Hydrates and soften the hair strands
• Improve hair elasticity
• Improve/restores moisture to hair strand
• Strengthen and repairs damaged hair

A deep conditioner can be moisture based, protein based or balanced.
A MOISTURE based deep conditioner is used to combact dry breaking hair either caused by lack of moisture or protein overload.

A PROTEIN based deep conditioner is used to combact moisture overload but it is always used to also prevent it. A protein deep conditioner helps strengthen the hair shaft preventing breakage and damage but should be used with caution and a moisture based deep conditioner must be used afterwards to balance out it's effect.

BALANCING deep conditioner as the name implies, contains both moisture and protein. This is a good option when trying to save cost but can be misleading if the product ingredients are not properly checked. A balanced deep conditioner and protein ingredient after.

How can a deep conditioner be used:
Before deciding to use a deep conditioner,it is important to

1. Know your hair porosity. Knowing this helps you reduce trial and error process and also saves you time, effort and heartaches.

2. Know what your hair needs. Dry, breakage, stiff and frizzy hair is caused by lack of moisture/protein overload. Imagine not knowing this and you go for a protein based product.

A deep conditioner is a must have for every hair. A moisture based and a protein/ balancing deep conditioner.
