*Arsenal 0-0 Sporting CP (1-0 agg)*
Champions League QF 2nd leg at the Emirates.
Arsenal through to back-to-back UCL semi-finals for the first time ever. It was ugly.
*The match*
A proper damp squib. Arsenal had a 1-0 lead from *Kai Havertz’s 90+1’ winner* in Lisbon last week and they defended it. That’s about it.
*Key moments:*
- *1st half*: Sporting’s Geny Catamo volleyed against the outside of the post. Closest either side came.
- *2nd half*: Leandro Trossard hit the woodwork for Arsenal. David Raya had to save from Catamo and Luis Suarez late on.
- *90+5’*: Sporting’s Joao Simoes went “agonisingly close” with the last kick. Arsenal survived.
- *Injury*: Noni Madueke forced off after 63’ with a knee knock — big worry before Man City on Sunday.
*Why it was so flat*
1. *Arsenal played with the handbrake on*: 0 shots on target until late. Arteta admitted they were “running on empty” after the 2-1 loss to Bournemouth dented their PL title hopes.
2. *Sporting lacked quality*: Had chances through Hjulmand counters and Catamo, but no real firepower. Trincao wasted his best opening. “They did not deserve to reach the semi-finals.”
3. *Tie was won in Lisbon*: Havertz’s stoppage-time goal 8 days ago separated the teams. This leg was just game management.
*Stats & context*
- *Aggregate*: Arsenal 1-0 Sporting. Havertz’s goal the only one across 180 mins.
- *Shots on target*: Arsenal 1, Sporting 2. Combined xG under 1.0.
- *Clean sheet*: Arsenal’s 8th in 12 UCL games this season. Defense bailed them out again.
- *History*: First time Arsenal reach consecutive UCL semis. Lost to PSG last season.
- *What next*: *Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid* in the semis. Arsenal battered Atleti 4-0 in the group stage in October, but Arteta says “this will be very, very different.”
*The bigger picture*
Declan Rice: “To get to back-to-back semi-finals is an amazing achievement and now we want to go one step further.”
But neutrals were asleep. Compared to Bayern 4-3 Real happening at the same time, this was a “bloody awful contest”. Arsenal also have Man City away Sunday in a PL title decider, so conserving energy made sense — even if it wasn’t pretty.
*Bottom line*: Underwhelming, nervy, but job done. Arsenal keep flying the English flag in the Champions League, and Havertz’s late goal in Lisbon is why.
