*Arsenal 0-0 Sporting CP (1-0 agg)*

Champions League QF 2nd leg at the Emirates.

Arsenal through to back-to-back UCL semi-finals for the first time ever. It was ugly.

*The match*
A proper damp squib. Arsenal had a 1-0 lead from *Kai Havertz’s 90+1’ winner* in Lisbon last week and they defended it. That’s about it.

*Key moments:*
- *1st half*: Sporting’s Geny Catamo volleyed against the outside of the post. Closest either side came.
- *2nd half*: Leandro Trossard hit the woodwork for Arsenal. David Raya had to save from Catamo and Luis Suarez late on.
- *90+5’*: Sporting’s Joao Simoes went “agonisingly close” with the last kick. Arsenal survived.
- *Injury*: Noni Madueke forced off after 63’ with a knee knock — big worry before Man City on Sunday.

*Why it was so flat*
1. *Arsenal played with the handbrake on*: 0 shots on target until late. Arteta admitted they were “running on empty” after the 2-1 loss to Bournemouth dented their PL title hopes.
2. *Sporting lacked quality*: Had chances through Hjulmand counters and Catamo, but no real firepower. Trincao wasted his best opening. “They did not deserve to reach the semi-finals.”
3. *Tie was won in Lisbon*: Havertz’s stoppage-time goal 8 days ago separated the teams. This leg was just game management.

*Stats & context*
- *Aggregate*: Arsenal 1-0 Sporting. Havertz’s goal the only one across 180 mins.
- *Shots on target*: Arsenal 1, Sporting 2. Combined xG under 1.0.
- *Clean sheet*: Arsenal’s 8th in 12 UCL games this season. Defense bailed them out again.
- *History*: First time Arsenal reach consecutive UCL semis. Lost to PSG last season.
- *What next*: *Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid* in the semis. Arsenal battered Atleti 4-0 in the group stage in October, but Arteta says “this will be very, very different.”

*The bigger picture*
Declan Rice: “To get to back-to-back semi-finals is an amazing achievement and now we want to go one step further.”

But neutrals were asleep. Compared to Bayern 4-3 Real happening at the same time, this was a “bloody awful contest”. Arsenal also have Man City away Sunday in a PL title decider, so conserving energy made sense — even if it wasn’t pretty.

*Bottom line*: Underwhelming, nervy, but job done. Arsenal keep flying the English flag in the Champions League, and Havertz’s late goal in Lisbon is why.

*Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid (6-4 agg)*

Champions League QF 2nd leg at the Allianz Arena.

An instant UCL classic. Bayern through to semis vs PSG after a chaotic late show.

*The 5-goal first half — pure chaos*
- *35 seconds 0-1*: *Arda Guler* opens it after *Manuel Neuer*’s terrible pass goes straight to him. Empty net finish.
- *5’ 1-1*: *Aleksandar Pavlovic* heads in unmarked with Lunin stranded. Bayern level immediately.
- *29’ 1-2*: *Arda Guler* again — 25-yard free kick over the wall, top corner. 2-1 Real, 3-3 on aggregate.
- *37’ 2-2*: *Harry Kane* makes it 3-3 agg. His 50th Bayern goal of the season, 12th in UCL. Finishes after great work from Musiala.
- *44’ 2-3*: *Kylian Mbappe* puts Real ahead 4-3 on agg just before HT, slotting Vinicius Jr’s assist. Bayern chasing again.

*Second half: Bayern composure + Real collapse*
- *86’ Red*: *Eduardo Camavinga* sent off — 2 yellows in 8 minutes for Real sub. Huge turning point.
- *89’ 3-3*: *Luis Diaz* breaks Real hearts. Cuts in, blast from the edge beats Lunin. 5-4 Bayern on agg.
- *90+2’ 4-3*: *Michael Olise* wonderstrike from distance to seal it. 6-4 agg final.
- *90+14’*: *Arda Guler* also sent off for dissent after the whistle. Real finish with 9.

*Key talking points*

*1. Neuer’s nightmare, then redemption*
40-year-old Neuer, man of the match in the 2-1 first leg win, gifts Real the opener after 35 seconds. But he made big saves after, including blocking Mbappe 1v1 early 2nd half. Playing his 25th UCL QF, tying the record.

*2. Arda Guler announces himself*
21 years old, hadn’t scored in 20 UCL games before this. Then 2 goals in 29 minutes — one from Neuer’s error, one worldie free kick. Also got sent off at full time. Wild night.

*3. Harry Kane: 50 up*
Reached 50 Bayern goals for the season. 12 UCL goals this campaign. Subbed off late as Kompany protected the lead.

*4. Camavinga red changed everything*
Real 3-2 up and looking comfortable. Camavinga comes on, picks up 2 yellows by 86’, and 3 minutes later Diaz scores the equalizer. Down to 10, Real couldn’t hold.

*5. Bayern’s mentality*
Kompany: “The boys were mentally strong to recover from setbacks… We stayed calm and always felt our moment would come.” Down 3 times, came back each time. They’re chasing a treble — 12 points clear in Bundesliga, German Cup semi next.

*Stats & context*
- *Aggregate*: Bayern 6-4 Real. First leg: Bayern 2-1 at Bernabeu.
- *Shots*: End-to-end. 5 goals before HT, only 2 after.
- *Real*: 15-time European champions out. Only realistic trophy left was UCL. Mbappe + Guler not enough.
- *Bayern*: Into semis vs *PSG*, who knocked out Liverpool. Kompany booked — misses 1st leg vs holders.
- *What next*: Bayern can win Bundesliga this weekend, then face Bayer Leverkusen in German Cup semi.

*Bottom line*: “The Beautiful Game in its truest form”. Mistakes, worldies, red cards, late drama. Diaz’s 89th-minute blast and Olise’s stoppage-time screamer send Bayern through after Real had led 3 separate times on the night.

*Liverpool 0-2 PSG (agg 0-4)* — *Champions League QF 2nd leg,

PSG go through to the semis. Liverpool out, comfortably beaten over two legs.

*How the 2nd leg played out*
- *72’ 0-1 PSG*: *Ousmane Dembele* breaks Anfield. Cuts inside Mac Allister 20 yards out, curls left-footed into the bottom corner past Mamardashvili. That was game over — 3-0 on aggregate.
- *90+1’ 0-2 PSG*: *Dembele again* — finishes Bradley Barcola’s cross to complete his double and make it 4-0 on aggregate.

*Key moments that didn’t change it*
- *1st half*: Virgil van Dijk had a close-range rebound blocked by Marquinhos when it looked certain to go in.
- *2nd half*: Liverpool were awarded a penalty when Mac Allister went down in the box, but VAR overturned it.
- *Selection*: Arne Slot benched *Mo Salah* and started a back 5 to protect the 0-2 1st leg deficit. Salah came on for the final hour but couldn’t change the tie.
- *Injury*: Hugo Ekitike was stretchered off in the 1st half with a suspected Achilles injury.

*Why Liverpool lost — 3 big reasons*

*1. The tie was lost in Paris*
1st leg: *PSG 2-0 Liverpool* at Parc des Princes. Desire Doue 11’ deflected opener, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia 65’ solo goal. Liverpool had *0 shots on target* and 26% possession. Slot’s 5-3-2 with Salah benched backfired — they were “played off the park”. You don’t come back from 2-0 vs this PSG.

*2. PSG are the best team in Europe right now*
Luis Enrique’s side are defending champions and favorites to retain in Budapest. Even “far from their best, they were still too good”. They soaked up Anfield pressure, waited, then Dembele killed it. 5th UCL semi in 7 seasons. ad11edc1570f

*3. Slot’s gamble & Liverpool’s form*
Benched Salah for a back 5 to get “defensive security”. Instead it “gave PSG the freedom of the Parc”. Liverpool came in off *4 straight away defeats* including 4-0 to Man City in the FA Cup. Slot said after leg 1: “When we pressed them high we were ripped apart… the second half was more about surviving”.
*Stats & context*
- *Aggregate*: 4-0 PSG.

- *Shots 1st leg*: PSG 18-3, possession 74%-26%.
- *PSG XI 2nd leg*: Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Zaire-Emery, Joao Neves, Vitinha; Doue, Kvaratskhelia, Dembele.
- *Liverpool XI*: Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Wirtz, Ekitike, Isak.
- *What next*: PSG face Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in semis. Liverpool focus on top-5 race — they’re 5th, 4 points ahead of Chelsea.
*Bottom line*
No Anfield miracle this time. PSG dominated both legs. Dembele’s 2 goals across the tie, Kvaratskhelia’s class, and Liverpool’s lack of cutting edge + Slot’s 1st leg setup meant it never felt like a comeback. The “class gap” showed.

*Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona (agg 3-2)*

Champions League QF 2nd leg at the Metropolitano.

Atletico go through to the semis despite losing on the night. Here’s how it played out and what it means:

*Match flow & key moments*
- *4’ 0-1 Barcelona*: *Lamine Yamal* opened it up. He intercepted Clement Lenglet’s loose pass, played a one-two with Ferran Torres, and rolled it through Juan Musso’s legs. Electric start — he’d already tested Musso 40 seconds in.
- *24’ 0-2 Barcelona*: *Ferran Torres* levelled the tie 2-2 on aggregate. Dani Olmo split the defense, Torres took two touches to shift Lenglet and drilled top corner. Barca were rampant; Atleti looked rattled.
- *31’ 1-2 Atletico*: *Ademola Lookman* broke Barca hearts. Marcos Llorente’s low cross, Lookman converted to put Atleti back ahead 3-2 on aggregate. That goal stood for the next 60+ minutes.
- *80’ Red card*: *Eric Garcia* sent off for Barcelona. He brought down Alexander Sorloth from behind, denying a clear goal-scoring chance. VAR overturned an offside call. Just like the 1st leg, Barca finished with 10.
- *90+6’ Chance*: Ronald Araujo headed over from close range — Barca’s last shot at forcing extra time.

*Tactical analysis*

*1. Barca’s high line giveth and taketh away*
Hansi Flick’s aggressive line created chaos early. Yamal and Torres punished Lenglet’s sloppiness and Atleti couldn’t handle Barca’s vertical passing in transition. But that same high line is why they’re out. Lookman’s goal came from a simple ball in behind — Atleti had runners attacking the space Barca vacated. Same story in the 1st leg: 2-0 up, conceded to Alvarez/Sorloth on the break, then went down to 10.

*2. Ferran Torres over Lewandowski worked — for 24 minutes*
Flick benched Lewy for mobility up top. Torres’ movement vs Lenglet was decisive for both goals. He stretched Atleti and linked with Yamal/Olmo brilliantly. But once Atleti scored and dropped into a mid-block, Barca lacked a focal point. Lewy only came on at 68’.

*3. Simeone’s in-game management won it*
Atleti were getting overrun 0-2 down. The stoppage when Fermin Lopez collided with Musso let Simeone regroup. From 31’ onward they sat deeper, compact 5-3-2, and dared Barca to break them down. They didn’t. After Garcia’s red, it was game management — Le Normand, Gimenez, and Witsel threw bodies at everything.

*4. Individual battles*
- *Yamal vs Lenglet*: Yamal bullied his former teammate. Won the ball for 0-1, drew the red in the 1st leg, constantly dragged Atleti’s backline out of shape.
- *Musso vs Barca*: Made 4 saves in the first 25 mins. Kept Atleti alive early.
- *Lookman*: 1 shot, 1 goal. That’s been his UCL campaign — ruthless in big moments.
*Stats snapshot*
- *Shots*: Barca dominated but couldn’t find the 3rd. Atleti had 1 shot on target in the 1st half and scored.
- *Red cards*: Barca finished both legs with 10 men — Pau Cubarsi in leg 1, Eric Garcia in leg 2.
- *Aggregate*: Atleti 3-2 Barca. They lost the battle but won the war.

*Bigger picture*
- *Atletico*: First UCL semi since 2017. They’ll face Arsenal or Sporting. Simeone called it a “bloody battle” and praised his side’s resilience. This is classic Cholo — suffer, counter, survive.
- *Barcelona*: Out of Europe, but still 7 points clear in La Liga after beating 10-man Atleti 2-1 last weekend. The high line and lack of discipline in Europe vs domestic form is the story of their season. Yamal looks like a Ballon d’Or player at 18, but the team can’t keep 11 on the pitch in knockouts.
*Bottom line*: Barca were the better side over 180 mins, but Atleti were smarter. Two red cards, one high line exploited twice, and Lookman’s finish. Champions League knockout football in a nutshell.
