Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Returns to Court Today: What Happened in the Last Hearing and What to Expect Now

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be in court today, July 18, 2025, for a critical hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja. This comes after the last court sitting held on May 19, 2025.

During that last session, the federal government (prosecution) told the court that they had finished presenting all their evidence against Kanu. In response, Kanu’s legal team announced that they would be filing a “no-case submission”. This means they believe the government did not provide enough evidence to continue the trial, and that Kanu should not be made to defend himself.

Because of this, the judge adjourned the case to today to hear both sides and decide whether the case should continue or be dismissed.

What is happening today?

Today’s court session is very important. The judge will listen to arguments from both the government and Kanu’s lawyers. Then, the court will decide:

If the no-case submission is accepted – the case will end, and Kanu may be released.

If it is rejected – the trial will continue, and Kanu’s legal team will begin their defense.

What people are saying

Many of Kanu’s supporters and IPOB members are hoping that the court will dismiss the charges and release him today. They are also pointing to a Kenyan court judgment, which declared that Kanu’s 2021 arrest and transfer from Kenya to Nigeria was illegal and against international law.
