PRESS RELEASE

NGO Hails Governor Otti for Tackling Salary Padding

Uyo, September 4, 2025

Speak Africa International Centre for Human Development (Saicentre) has applauded Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for taking decisive action against civil servants indicted in salary padding, describing the move as a landmark step in the fight against corruption.

In a statement signed by Mr. Marc Chuks Nwadioha, Executive Director of Saicentre, the organization praised the Governor’s action as:

> “a bold demonstration of accountability, transparency, and zero tolerance for corruption.”

Nwadioha emphasized that such interventions would not only discourage corrupt practices but also restore public confidence in government offices

The NGO noted that Governor Otti’s move would guarantee that limited state resources are properly directed toward development projects and the welfare of citizens, rather than lost to fraudulent practices.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) program held in Uyo, Nwadioha reaffirmed Saicentre’s commitment to partnering with reform-minded leaders.

> “As an organization dedicated to promoting good governance, growth, and sustainability across Africa, we stand ready to support Governor Otti’s administration as it works to entrench discipline and strengthen democratic governance,” Nwadioha said.

Speak Africa International Centre for Human Development (Saicentre) is a registered non-governmental organization focused on fostering good governance, institutional reforms, social growth, and sustainable development across Africa. The organization works through advocacy, policy engagement, and citizen mobilization to strengthen transparency and accountability in public service.

💔 THE DAY A PARENT CALLED A TEACHER ‘P00R MAN’ IN FRONT OF HER CHILD

It happened in a secondary school in this country

The teacher was young, passionate, and deeply in love with Mathematics. He believed discipline could change any student. In his class, assignments were non-negotiable.

But there was one girl who hated Maths. She never did her homework, laughed at those who tried, and flaunted her empty notebook like an achievement.

One morning, she walked into class again without her note… no assignment… no $hame.
The teacher told her to kneel down.
She smirked and asked, “Is it by force to do assignment?”

Trying to uphold discipline, he gave her 3 str0kes of the can3.
She cr!3d — and ran home.

Minutes later, her mother stormed into the school, eyes blazing.
Before anyone could speak, she shouted in front of students and staff:

“You this p00r man!”
“How much is your salary? Maybe 20,000!”
“Look at the non$en$3 trousers you’re wearing!”
“You fl0g my child because of Maths assignment?!”

The teacher stood still.
Her words pierc3d deeper than any sla.p.

What she didn’t know was that his salary was actually 15,000 naira. His trousers were worn, his shoes peeling. But he still showed up every morning — prepared, punctual, and determined to teach.

That day, in the staff room, he br0ke down.
Not for himself… but for every in$ulted teacher.
For every dedicated educator treated like nothing.
For a profession that raises doctors, lawyers, and engineers — yet is paid in $hame.

Teaching in Nigeria is not just a job.
It’s a battl3 without weap0n$ — against p0verty, disrespect, delayed salaries, reb3lliou$ students, and angr¥ parents.

To every teacher out there:
Your value is greater than they see.
One day, even the loudest voices against you will remember the gold you carried in your hands.

"They hired me to care for their 92-year-old grandmother.
They told me not to talk too much, not to expect much.
But that old woman…
She saw what nobody else did.
And before she died, she left something behind that shocked the entire family."

They Paid Me to Take Care of Their Grandmother — But She Took Care of My Life Instead”

1. I TOOK THE JOB OUT OF DESPERATION

My name is Ajoke.

I had just lost my parents and dropped out of school.
I was 26. Jobless. Broke. Tired of asking for help.

A friend told me about a family in Ikoyi who needed a live-in caregiver for their grandmother.

“They’ll pay you ₦40,000 monthly,” she said.

I didn’t care about the pay. I just needed food and a roof over my head.

That’s how I met Grandma Ethel.

---

2. THE FAMILY DIDN’T CARE ABOUT HER

They lived in a mansion.
Everything looked shiny, but cold.

Her children visited once a month — sometimes not at all.
Her grandchildren never called.

“Just feed her. Bathe her. Give her drugs. She likes to talk — don’t mind her too much,” they told me.

But I listened to her anyway.

And she listened to me too.

---

3. THE FIRST TIME SHE HELD MY HAND

She was 92. Fragile. Wrinkled. Wise.

One afternoon, I was crying quietly in the kitchen.
She called out, “Ajoke, come.”

I wiped my face and went to her room.

She held my hand and said,

> “You remind me of my younger self.
Strong on the outside. Broken on the inside.
Don’t worry, child. Everything will change.”_

---

4. THE NIGHTS I SPENT BY HER SIDE

She had insomnia.

Most nights, I’d sit beside her bed, listening to stories about her youth, war, marriage, and regrets.

She’d say, “My children have forgotten me. But you? You see me.”

I didn’t do much.

Just small talk. Back rubs. Hot tea.

But somehow, she said I gave her life again.

---

5. THE FAMILY STARTED TO GET ANNOYED

Her daughter noticed.

“Why is she always calling your name?”
“You’re not here to become her friend, you know?”

I nodded and said nothing.

But Grandma Ethel always said,

> “Let them talk. They never saw me. You did.”_

---

6. THE SECRET ROOM

One day, Grandma Ethel told me,

> “There’s a box under my bed. If anything happens to me, open it.”_

I promised.

Weeks passed.

She got weaker.

Then, one morning… she didn’t wake up.

---

7. THE LETTER THAT SHOCKED EVERYONE

After the funeral, the family didn’t even shed a tear.

They began to argue over her will before the service ended.

That night, I opened the box.

Inside was a letter:

> _“To my dearest Ajoke,

You reminded me of my humanity when the world forgot.
I’ve changed my will.
You now own the property in Shomolu.
And ₦2.5 million in my GTB account.

This is not a reward — it’s a thank you.
Love,
Grandma Ethel”_

---

8. THE FAMILY TRIED TO FIGHT IT

When the lawyer confirmed the will, they went crazy.

“How can a total stranger inherit anything?!”

“She manipulated Mama!”

But the lawyer said,

> “Madam Ethel was of sound mind.

And she wrote this will with her own hand, recorded on video, stating:
‘Ajoke gave me peace. My family gave me presence.’”_

---

9. I MOVED OUT — INTO THE LIFE SHE LEFT FOR ME

I left their mansion quietly.

Moved into the small Shomolu property — a bungalow with a garden.

I renovated it.

Started a small elderly care center.
Named it Ethel’s Arms.

It began with 3 old women.
Today, we care for over 50 across Lagos.

All because one forgotten woman… remembered me.

---

10. THE DAY HER GRANDDAUGHTER CAME TO ME

Years later, Grandma Ethel’s granddaughter visited me.

She sat quietly in the waiting room.

I recognized her immediately.

She looked at me and said,

> “I judged you.

But today I needed help for my own mother… and someone told me to come here.

I’m sorry.”_

I smiled.

“Forgiveness is easy,” I said, “when love leads the way.”

---

Every flower in my garden blooms with her memory.

Every old person I help… is a thank you to her.

I was hired to take care of a dying woman.

But she ended up breathing life into me.

"Children throw tantrums, but they don’t throw tantrums just because they want to throw tantrums. There’s always something, and even if we feel like it’s insignificant, throwing tantrums in itself is something that we should pay attention to. If a previously bubbly child who was outspoken begins to withdraw, doesn’t want to go out, struggles with sleep and eating, or no longer enjoys things they used to—that’s a red flag."

This Holiday, make good use of your parenting skills.

This holiday is not just a break from school.
It’s not just about rest or catching up on sleep.
It’s time for close observation.

A perfect time to build something more powerful than academics:

And please,
Let’s be honest phones and TV won’t raise children.

Too much screen makes them restless, bored, and lazy.
But real-life activities will grow them inside and out.

Let me ask you.
Do you have a shop?
Take them along this holiday.
Let them see how you arrange goods, talk to customers, count money.
That is Maths. That is Communication. That is Confidence.
Are you a Hair Stylist? Get them involved.
Let them watch you twist and braid.
Let them help sweep the floor.
You are not just making hair you are teaching focus and consistency.
Going to the market?
Let them go with you even if it is once.
Let them hear how you price things,( I will share with you someday how I learnt to price things). choose the best, calculate totals.
That’s real-life decision-making.
Got an office?
Let them follow you.
Let them press the keyboard, wipe the desk, carry the files.
It might seem small, but they are absorbing big things.

This is what we mean when we say:
Learning goes beyond books. Education is not only in the classroom.Childhood is not just play it is Preparation.

Let them see.
Let them try.
Let them make mistakes.

Infact, this holiday involve them in everything you do.
Don’t do everything alone. Involve them. Train them. Grow them.

You will be surprised how much your child can learn this holiday.

Do not let them just sit with phone or TV all day.

Let them stand up, move around, learn something useful.
Let them do real things that will help them in life.

Let’s raise children who are not only smart, but skillful.
Not just book-wise, but life-ready.

Centre Decries The Level Of Overgrowth in Lagos Schools, Pledges Support.

Speak Africa International Centre for Human Development ( Saicentre), a non governmental organisation registered to support good governance, growth and academic support in Africa has raised concerns over the level of overgrowth in and around school environments in Lagos state which they said poses both environmental and safety issues.

The Centre, while on a school to school child development program and 21st century parenting training, said it has discovered some schools under districts 3 and 6 which poses safety threat to students and visitors .

Reacting, the principal of Ilamuye Junior Grammer School explained that the school is situated on a vast expanse of land originally intended for both the senior and junior schools.
She narrated that though the senior school was later relocated, the ground remained extensive and require regular maintenance to prevent Overgrowth and maintain a conducive learning environment

The project coordinator, School to School Child Development Program, Ms Modupe Godwin said Saicentre would reach out to some of their partners for the purchase of a new Mower to replace the old one which the principal said was damaged beyond repair.

Ms Modupe said Speak Africa International in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Education has through the school to school child development program and 21st century parenting training reduced the number of school drop outs, sexually abused children and providing academic support for less privileged students while at the same time providing a comprehensive 21st century parenting training for Lagos parents.

Children Have Right To Food.

Today, we narrated the experience most of us had with our parents while growing up. Those days, our parents would use hunger as a weapon or means of punishment when a child fails to perform or displays an act of disobedient.
Now, that was many years ago.
Sometimes, it sounds unbelievable that some parents are still using this odd and old method on their children.

One of the more than 40 rights of a chid which is recognised globally is the " Right To Food" which speculated that children must eat food even when they committed any known offence.

Some years back, I walked into a school premises and met a girl of about 14 years who fainted at the schoolgate. When we intervened, we realised she hadn't eaten food since the previous night, why because, according to her, her mum refused to allow her eat because she failed to do her housework.
Now, while we want children to always obey their parents, it is against their right to use hunger as a means of punishment. Parents are strongly advised to use other means to resolve conflict instead of using hunger...this is no longer acceptable in the 21st century parenting.
