99.9% of Tiv Girls Married as Virgins in the Past
The Tiv culture is one of the most fascinating and unique traditions you can encounter anywhere in the world. In earlier times, nearly every Tiv girl married as a virgin, upheld by the sacred practice of the “Ikyôôr Cult.”
All young Tiv girls were initiated into this cult, which strictly forbade premarital s*x. The consequences for breaking this sacred rule were dire: the man who defiled a virgin would become impotent, while the girl risked becoming barren.
According to The Battle of Karagbe: The Forbidden History, both offenders had to undergo cleansing and purification rituals before being reintegrated into their families.
It was a great source of shame for parents—especially mothers—if their daughter was discovered not to be a virgin on her wedding night.
The husband would send back a white cloth, sometimes marked with a hole or bloodstains, as a public sign that the bride was not pure. Such a disgrace weighed heavily on the mother’s honor.
Despite Tiv society being patrilineal, Tiv women were considered the pride of the nation. They served as the balancing force between families, communities, sub-clans, and clans. For this reason, Tiv girls were fiercely protected at all costs.
The Ikyôôr Cult, along with other Tiv cultural institutions such as the Yam-Ishé marriage system, was later outlawed by the British following the forced amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates—without consultation of the Middle Belt peoples.
For Tiv boys, access to girls was restricted until they reached the age of marriage. Adultery, on the other hand, was regarded as tantamount to giving up one’s life to both the woman’s husband and one’s enemies.
