What Happened To The First Nigerians To Join The Army?

The gentlemen you see in this photo were the pioneers of the Nigerian Army. They are from right to left, Lieutenant Wellington Duke Bassey, Lieutenant Samuel Ademulegun, 2nd Lieutenant Zakariya Maimalari, 2nd Lieutenant Lawan Umar, and Lieutenant Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, at Hyde Park, London, in 1953.

Of the five men in this photograph, three of them were brutally murdered.

Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun was killed with his Mrs. Latifah Ademulegun. She was eight months pregnant when, on the night of January 15, 1966, Major Timothy Onwuatuegwu stormed into her matrimonial bedroom to kill her husband.

She got up from the bed stood in front of her husband, and refused to move. Major Onwuatuegwu then gunned down both her and her husband.

Their two underaged children, Solape and Kole, ran into the room and began to cry at the trauma of seeing both their parents' bloodstained bodies. They never recovered from the shock.

Brigadier Maimalari was killed on the same day by Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna. He was Nigeria's first Sandhurst educated officer. The thing about the death of Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari was that he had escaped from Major Okafor, whom Ifeajuna had sent to kill him. He was barely 100 meters to the safety of the Federal Guards Brigade when he saw Ifeajuna's Mercedes Benz car. He was so relieved at seeing Ifeajuna, whom he had just hosted some hours ago at his home, that he came out of the bushes.

He was Ifeajuna's direct boss and was like a father to him, so he never believed that Ifeajuna was one of the plotters. As his car approached, he stopped Ifeajuna, who greeted him with a hail of bullets, killing him on the spot.

Major General Ironsi was killed on July 29, 1966, in a forested location close to the Government House, Ibadan, by mutinous Northern NCOs, who first overpowered then Major Theophilus Danjuma, and seized Aguiyi-Ironsi and his host, Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi.

Colonel Fajuyi paid a high price for loyalty. Everybody around Aguiyi Ironsi abandoned him. Everybody, except Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, who refused to abandon his guest.

What happened to the other two officers?

Well, Lieutenant Wellington Duke Bassey was actually senior to Ironsi. He is reputed to be the first Nigerian to join the Royal West Africa Frontier Force, which would later be known as the Nigerian Army. But for some reason, Ironsi was chosen over him as General Officer Commanding after the last British GOC, Major General C.B. Welby-Everard, left for the United Kingdom.

He became the first head of the Federal Guards, now known as the Presidential Guards Brigade and often shortened to the Brigade of Guards, in September 1962 and held that post until 1968.

He lived to a ripe old age and died in 1995.

Lawan Umar, who was a childhood friend of Zakariya Maimalari, resigned from the army under mysterious circumstances before the Nigerian Army came under Nigerian control. Had he not resigned, he would likely have perished like his friend.

Did you know that the Alien in the 1979 Famous movie "THE ALIEN" was played by a Yoruba man - Bolaji Badejo!

The Movie made over $184.7 million at the Box Office.

Badejo studied abroad in the United States before moving to London, England, to get specialized training as a graphic designer. Bodejo was unusually tall, standing at a height of 2.08 meters (6 feet and 10 inches). Director Ridley Scott's casting crew was seeking a tall person to play the creature in his upcoming film.

Badejo, as a 26-year-old design student, was discovered drinking in a bar by a member of the casting team, who put him in touch with Scott. Scott believed that Badejo, at 6 feet 10 inches (208 cm) (7 feet (210 cm) inside the costume) and with a slender frame, could portray the alien and look as if his arms and legs were too long to be real.

The success of Alien spawned the Alien franchise. Badejo was offered a role in a sequel, but moved back to Nigeria in 1980; this led to the sequels incorporating more puppetry and animation alongside several suit performers. Alien is his sole film credit.

After his return to Nigeria, Badejo began running his own art gallery in 1983. He died from sickle cell disease at the age of 39.

"Mungo Park didn't dîscover River Niger. It was African natives that took Mungo Park to the source of River Niger in Lokoja." Seun Kuti

"Stop letting history written by the whîte man deceîve you. History was written by whîte men and added to our curriculum because you can't dîspute what you don't know. So they virtually contról what we know and what we don't know but almost everything we know are lîes. They told us that Mungo Park discovered River Niger ! We were very stupîd to accept that Mungo Park discovered River Niger. There's a difference between and the answer. You need those answers to navigate in this world of lîes where we have been made to believe that Africans knew nothîng before the coming of the whîte man. If you belîeve that Mungo Park discovered River Niger, then you must believe that Africans who were using that water everyday who showed Mungo Park the source of that river are not humān beings. It was Africans that took Mungo Park to the source of River Niger in Lokoja. If you belîeve that Mungo Park discovered River Niger, then you must belîeve that your ancestors were truly anîmals. If you don't believe that your ancestors are anîmals, how then do you explain the fact that someone discovered something in a place where people were already living there before him. How can somebody come to your house and tell you he discovered your building of which you were already living there?" Seun Kuti

The best way to contrôl humān beings by is not lettîng them know what they need to know and that's exactly what has been done to Africans.

If I am not Yoruba I will be jealous too. A people rich in culture & history. So anything Yoruba will surely appear as a threat to them. A culture & heritage that couldn't die in far away Brazil. Cuba. Trinidad & Tobago. Yoruba created what's known as Nollywood in Nigeria today. Yoruba also dominated music. Sport and fashion in Nigeria. They don't like when we promote anything Yoruba. They don't want outsiders to see that Yoruba are the glory of Nigeria. The best economy state in Nigeria is from Yoruba land. The highest ethnic group in Africa are Yoruba. The richest ethnic group in Nigeria are Yoruba. The most influential people in Africa are Yoruba. We are the highest movies producers in Nigeria. We have stories to tell in Yoruba culture and history. Yoruba has the oldest history with calendar that's 10,000 years in Africa. So you understand why they always angry and quickly to say we're tribalist or bigot. They want to cage Yoruba glory as Nigeria glory. But it cannot work.

Brief about "Killi-We" Nwachukwu, from Oboro Umueze Ogwa, IMO state.

“Killi-We” Nwachukwu was for more than two decades celebrated as a homegrown Nigerian “superman.” Some of his legendary feats of strength included lifting buses, having cement blocks crushed on his head, and allowing cars to drive over his body.

Superman Killi-Wee Nwachukwu was the strongest man in Nigeria–Philip Emeagwali

Killiwe in action
He was a superman who was going from place to place to perform. People paid to watch him. I saw him perform at our primary school in those days. I think his real name was Nwozuzu Nwachukwu (or something like that). I heard that “Killi We” was a nickname he got after a fight with a certain man, one commentator said.

A great natural Superman! Nwozuzu Nwachukwu (Son of God). “Killi We” was a nickname he got after a fight with a stubborn man “Tick man” who refused to pay him his money for a truck load of goods he conveyed from the market to the man’s home.
He used to push a wooden two wheel truck with which he carried goods for people. Then, Truck vehicles were not around, or were not affordable. So, after dropping off the goods, the man would not pay what Nwachukwu charged claiming it was too high. He tried to walk away and Nwachukwu grabbed him by the hand insisting he must pay. A fight ensued and he pinned the man to the ground. The man’s wife ran in and came out with a wooden pestle to assist her husband. Nwachukwu snatched it from her, lifted the woman up and pinned her on top of her husband on the floor. Powerless, she started screaming, Killi We Nwachukwu, Killi we Nwanchukwu” meaning, Nwachukwu, kill us!

In the early 90’s, we were asked to pay some money so that he will come and display his power. We gladly paid the money. On the D day od his assuMed coming, we waited, we couldn’t see him, so, we left. The following day in school, some students that were patient enough narrated how he came, how he carried four students on each of his hand and some many
