Youth Arise Delegation Seeks Inclusive Empowerment Opportunities for Older Youths in Abia

A delegation of Youth Arise officials from various Local Government Areas in Abia State, led by Comrade Stanley Ababa, has paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, at his office in the ministry.

The visit was aimed at exploring ways to promote equal access to empowerment opportunities across the state, particularly for youths who may fall outside the age brackets of some government-driven initiatives.

Speaking during the meeting, Comrade Ababa acknowledged the developmental strides recorded by the present administration, particularly its people-centred policies and initiatives aimed at improving the overall quality of life of Abians. He also commended the Commissioner for his role in advancing youth development in the state.

He, however, called for greater attention to the needs of youths above the age of 35, particularly artisans, traders, craftsmen and others whose livelihoods may not necessarily align with technical or technology-driven initiatives such as TechRise.

He noted that while younger people continue to benefit from emerging opportunities in technology and other innovative sectors, there is a need for similar interventions that address the realities and career paths of older youths who also require government support to grow their businesses and sustain their livelihoods.

Responding, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba acknowledged the concerns raised by the delegation and highlighted the administration's achievements in sports and youth development. He reiterated his commitment to promoting inclusive policies and programmes that ensure no age group is left behind in the state's development agenda.

The Commissioner also provided guidance on the necessary steps the delegation could take to explore inclusion in existing empowerment initiatives, while reaffirming the state's commitment to the empowerment, development and rehabilitation of young people across Abia.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Pst. Mrs. Jane Igwe, was also present at the meeting and assured the delegation, as they departed, that their concerns had received the necessary attention and would be given appropriate consideration.

Abia 2026 National Open Para-Powerlifting Championship Ends with 51 Medals Awarded

The inaugural National Open Para-Powerlifting Championship, Abia 2026, has ended in Umuahia after athletes from across the country competed for honours in a highly competitive championship.

A total of 51 medals were awarded, comprising 18 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze medals, reflecting the level of competition among participating states.

Edo State emerged top of the medal standings with six gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Enugu followed with four gold medals, while Abia State secured two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Delta State recorded two gold, two silver and one bronze medal, while Plateau won one gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Oyo and Lagos each secured one gold, two silver and one bronze medal, while Kano recorded one gold, one silver and one bronze.

Osun won one silver and one bronze medal, while Ogun and Rivers secured one silver medal each. Imo recorded two bronze medals, with Kwara and Katsina winning one bronze medal apiece.

Declaring the championship closed on behalf of the Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, the Secretary to the Council, Comrade Jerry Basil, commended the Governor, Dr Alex Otti, OFR, for supporting another major sporting event in the state.

He also praised the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, for his role in driving the revitalisation of sports in Abia, while commending the athletes and officials for their discipline and conduct throughout the competition.

Basil reiterated the commitment of the Abia State Government to the continued development of sports and youth, as well as creating platforms for athletes to compete, develop and excel at the national and international levels.

The successful staging of the championship further underscores Abia's growing role as a host for national sporting events and its commitment to promoting para-sports and providing opportunities for athletes with disabilities to thrive..
