Abia’s Grand Sports Vision: Sports Nigeria Team Visits Proposed Economic Zone Site in Owaza

‎In the quiet oil rich community of Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government Area, a six-member delegation from Sports Nigeria LTD/GTE, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Nkechi Obi, visited one of the proposed sites for the Abia Special Sports Economic Zone (ASSEZ) on Thursday October 16, 2025.

‎Sports Nigeria LTD/GTE, the visionaries and major partners behind the initiative, conceived the Abia Special Sports Economic Zone as a transformative model for sports-driven industrialization in Nigeria. The Abia State Government, through its Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, has since embraced the vision, recognizing its potential to reshape the state’s economy through innovation and enterprise.

‎Owaza was the focus of today’s visit, with two other locations expected to be visited subsequently as part of the ongoing assessment process.

‎The project underscores growing investor confidence in Abia under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership. His people-centred governance and extensive infrastructural renewal continue to attract strategic partnerships and economic investments to the state.

‎At its core, the initiative seeks to harness the creativity and craftsmanship of Enyimba artisans, channeling their innovative energy to project Abia onto the global stage as a centre for sportswear manufacturing and merchandising.

‎Officials from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, including the Commissioner, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Mr. Raymond Ukwa accompanied the delegation. They reaffirmed the state’s readiness to support the project, noting its potential to create jobs, attract investors, and expand industrial capacity.

‎For Abia, the ASSEZ project represents more than infrastructure. It is a statement of intent, a move from the margins of Nigeria’s sports narrative to its manufacturing core, where talent, technology, and trade converge.

‎If brought to life, the Special Sports Economic Zone could redefine the state’s identity, turning Abia into the beating heart of Africa’s sports economy, one made in Nigeria, for the world.

Nigeria Dominates as Africa Para Badminton Championship 2025 Conclude in Abia

The Africa Para Badminton Championships 2025 came to a spectacular close on October 12, 2025, in Umuahia, Abia State, with Nigeria emerging as the undisputed champions of Africa, sweeping an astonishing 40 medals: 10 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze, in what has become a defining moment for the sport on the continent.

From the opening serve to the final smash, Team Nigeria’s athletes dazzled with precision, passion and poise. Their medal haul stood far ahead of other contenders, with Kenya finishing second with 11 medals and Egypt third with eight. The result underscored Nigeria’s growing dominance in para badminton and reaffirmed Abia State’s position as Africa’s new home of inclusive sport.

Among Nigeria’s gold medalists were Chigozie Jeremiah Nnanna, Mariam Eniola Bolaji, Chukwuebuka Sunday Eze, Munkwoba Tala Goman, Gift Ijeoma Chukwuemeka, Mary Mabwat Nathan and Chinyere Lucky Okoro, along with the formidable mixed doubles duo of Nnanna and Bolaji, whose chemistry and control thrilled spectators.

The night’s biggest moment came when Abia-born Gift Ijeoma Chukwuemeka defeated Africa’s No. 1, Shaimaa Samy Abdellatif of Egypt, in a gripping three-set final that had the crowd on its feet. Her victory sealed Nigeria’s supremacy and turned the arena into a sea of dancing fans and waving flags.

Representing the Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), the Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadinma Ananaba, commended the athletes for their courage and excellence. Two exceptional volunteers were also honoured with $100 cash awards each for outstanding service.

As the lights dimmed on the championship floor, Umuahia stood proud. It was a night that belonged to Nigeria, a celebration of grit, unity and the boundless power of human determination.

Their success not only added to Nigeria’s medal tally but also reaffirmed the country’s growing depth and promise in global para badminton.

Nigeria’s Gift Ijeoma Chukwuemeka Defeats Africa’s No. 1 to Win Gold at Para Badminton Championships

Nigeria’s Gift Ijeoma Chukwuemeka has written another golden chapter in African para badminton, defeating Egypt’s Shaimaa Samy Abdellatif, the continent’s top ranked player, to win gold in the finals of the Women's WH2 category of the Africa Para Badminton Championships 2025.

The victory came barely a week after Gift stunned the same opponent at the First Abia Para Badminton International, confirming her dominance and cementing Nigeria’s rising profile in the sport.

The final was a contest of power, precision and sheer determination. Gift lost the opening game to a sharp and confident Abdellatif but refused to back down. With remarkable composure, she adjusted her play, mixing defensive resilience with intelligent shot placement to claw her way back into the match.

Wheelchair bound but fiercely agile, Gift displayed extraordinary control and mental strength as she forced a third game, thrilling the home crowd with every rally. The tension peaked as both players exchanged long rallies, but Gift’s tactical brilliance and faith saw her through.

When the final shuttle fell on Abdellatif’s side, the arena erupted. Smiling through tears, Gift raised her hands in praise as the Nigerian supporters chanted her name.

“This victory is for Nigeria and for everyone who believes that determination can overcome any limitation,” she said after the match.

Her triumph not only secured gold but also reaffirmed Nigeria’s supremacy in African para badminton, turning Umuahia into the new capital of courage and excellence.
