BREAKING: Veteran actor Olu Jacobs dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s prominent actors, with a career spanning film, television and theatre.

🚨 Police issue nationwide alert over possible terror attacks on churches, schools and NYSC orientation camps.

The Nigeria Police Force says intelligence indicates increased mobilisation of terrorist elements for possible coordinated attacks on vulnerable locations.

The alert identifies the North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West as areas of concern, while police report movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau.

Police also said suspected ISWAP operatives and local collaborators were conducting surveillance of potential targets.

Commands have been ordered to strengthen patrols, surveillance, access control, stop-and-search operations and rapid response, while tightening security around borders and other entry routes.

The warning comes as schools prepare for the 2026/2027 academic session and ahead of the 2027 general elections.

15-year-old Maid Rescued After Alleged Months-long Confinement in Toilet in Rivers

A 15-year-old girl identified as Amarachi has been rescued after she was allegedly confined inside a toilet for months at the home of her employers in Abuloma, Rivers State.

Amarachi, who is from Ebonyi State, was reportedly living with a couple, Eze Simeon and his wife, as a domestic maid.

She was allegedly locked inside the toilet after she was said to have committed an offence. During the period, she was reportedly severely neglected and fed only once a day with leftover food.

The teenager was rescued on Monday, September 15, after she raised an alarm while the couple were away from the house.

Neighbours who heard her cries for help reportedly contacted the police division in Abuloma. Police officers responded to the scene and freed the girl.

The incident is currently under investigation, with further details expected from the Rivers State Police Command.

Former PDP Chairman Bamanga Tukur Dies Three Days Before 91st Birthday

Former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90, three days before his 91st birthday.

Tukur died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, his family announced.

Born on September 15, 1935, in Adamawa State, Tukur was a politician, businessman, administrator and elder statesman who held several prominent positions in Nigeria and across Africa.

He served as governor of the old Gongola State after being elected in 1982, but his tenure was cut short by the military coup of December 1983.

Before becoming governor, he served as general manager and chief executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) from 1975 to 1982. He later served as minister of industries under the military administration of Sani Abacha between 1993 and 1995.

In March 2012, Tukur was elected national chairman of the PDP, a position he held until 2014.

Outside politics, he founded BHI Holdings, also known as Daddo Group, and was a founder, former president and life patron of the Africa Business Roundtable. He also served as chairman of the NEPAD Business Group and became the first African vice-president of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH).

Tukur obtained a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States and later received an honorary doctorate in law from Benue State University, Makurdi.

He held the traditional titles of Tafidan Adamawa and Wakilin Ganye in Adamawa State.

Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle allegedly killed in South Africa

A 58-year-old Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, has allegedly been shot dead at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), in a statement issued on Thursday by its National President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, said the bishop was killed on Friday, September 4, 2026.

According to NICASA, two suspects reportedly gained access to Fakunle’s residence and opened fire, allegedly shooting him more than seven times.

Fakunle, an indigene of Iye in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was described by NICASA as a victim of a “horrific and senseless act of violence.”

The association condemned the killing and said the continued loss of Nigerian lives through violent crime in South Africa was deeply disturbing.

NICASA said it had informed the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg about the incident.

A murder case has also been opened at Jeppe Police Station, with investigations currently ongoing, according to the association.

NICASA called on the South African Police Service and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, identify and arrest those responsible, and ensure they face prosecution.

The association also urged Nigerian diplomatic authorities in South Africa to continue engaging with South African officials and monitor the investigation until justice is served.

Oluwafemi Adeniyi, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, promised to respond when contacted but had not done so as of the time of filing the report.

Appeal Court upholds 490-year sentence for ex-NEXIM Bank MD Robert Orya

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the conviction and 490-year prison sentence handed down to former Managing Director of Nigeria Export Import Bank, Robert Orya.

A three-man panel of the appellate court, led by Justice Muhammed Danjuma, unanimously dismissed Orya’s appeal, ruling that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Orya was convicted by the FCT High Court on all 49 counts in a case involving allegations of obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and advance fee fraud amounting to N2.4 billion.

Justice F.E. Messiri had sentenced him to 10 years on each of the 49 counts on February 5, 2026, bringing the total sentence to 490 years. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Orya, who served as NEXIM Bank MD from 2009 to 2016, was appointed by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua in August 2009 and reappointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.

He was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in 2021.

In dismissing the appeal, Justice Danjuma said the issues raised were resolved in favour of the respondent and against Orya, describing the appeal as devoid of merit.

The appellate court consequently affirmed the February 5, 2026 judgment of the FCT High Court.
